Hello! I may add to your confusion; however now is a great time for you to begin looking at maps from the Europe pre-1918 (WWI) in order to establish if the village Kalisz was in the former German Empire. There was a period of time where Poland did not exist. Think of pre-1918 Europe like a blank slate with ethnic groups living all over the place (because of the changing borders.)
1. Begin to look at maps and identify the geographical location pre-1918.
2. The language used for place fields in Wikitree profiles should reflect the government of your village at that time. It was most likely in the German Empire, so the language would be in German.
3. You should add the "German Empire" category to your ancestor's page. Perhaps someday in the future you may want to work with Wikitree about proper categorization of this village pre-1918 and post 1918. "Polish Roots" would also be a good category.
4. There are stickers I have created for Galicia which you would be able to use (Polish ethnicity and Roman Catholic): Galicia Project
5. You may want to add information on the biography of your ancestor regarding the geographical location pre-1918 and post-1918.
