Why isn't Armenian in the language list?

Question

I was surprised to find that Armenian is not a listed language option, which seems strange considering that Armenian is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Since we have Macedonian, we should definitely have Armenian as a language option. Who do I need to talk to?

Olin, I'm afraid there is nobody to talk to about it.  WikiTree gets that list directly from familysearch and has no control over it.  I guess you'd have to talk to familysearch.org about it.

While we may (or may not) import the list from Family Search, I know that the WikiTree's webmaster most certainly has control over this function. It should be possible for users to add their own language, just as we do with locations.

Of course you can add your own location in whatever language you want to.  It's just that the language choices offered are the ones that are included in the list of place names that come from familysearch.  If WikiTree made it possible for you to enter some language not offered on that list then all it would do is to offer you no place name choices because there are none tagged for languages that are not shown on that list.

When you choose a language, you are not adding anything - all you are doing is selecting the filter that limits the place names offered to those in the language you selected.

FamilySearch has the Armenian version of the town names in the list (maybe not all of them..):

You can see it under alternative names (in this case I searched Yerevan). I get Երեւան..

Should that not mean that it should show up in our list?

Then again when I put in the Armenian version of the name in their family tree then it only offers the English version.. and when I do the same with a Swedish place name I get the name with Swedish letters so I suppose they prefer you to use the western alphabet in their system.. I get a lot of errors on the Swedish place names still, theres åäö missing in the place names, or they have missed Östra/Södra in the town names, which is part of the name itself not just indicating if it was the East/South part of town. But they are extremely responsive when you send in a correction/feedback to them, maybe you should simply contact them via the "Provide Feedback" button on the bottom of the place list (left bottom side). And ask if it is not possible to have the Armenian alphabet show up in the results.

I'm no expert but I would definitely try it. Doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm not sure how fast it shows up here though, because I am pretty sure some of my recent corrections at FS is missing when adding it here on WT..
