When I try to upload my Gedcom I get an error and an aborted connection. [closed]

Hi all,

I didn't want to have to post anything here, I don't want to sound like too much of a newbie. However, I've come up against something I can't fix myself. A few months ago I uploaded a gedcom to WikiTree - no problem. I've been trying to upload an updated gedcom, but it comes up with an error. It says "This site can't be reached. The webpage at https://wikitree.com/wiki/Special:UploadGedcom might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address". Err_connection_aborted

I have been trying off and on for weeks. I've tried to do it on 3 different devices. I've re-downloaded my gedcom from Ancestry multiple times in case the first was corrupted. I deleted my original gedcom file in case the 5000 people limit was being reached (the new gedcom is under 4000).

So now I admit defeat and ask for help. What am I doing wrong? The file is called Thompson Family Tree.ged which I believe is the correct format.

Thank you in advance for any help.

closed with the note: I figured it out on my own.

Hi all,

In relation to my original comment, I had to split my gedcom into 6 before it would upload. The total people in my tree were less than 4000. I'm updating this question in case others are having the same problem. I split my tree at my great grandparents and uploaded the split gedcom files individually to WikiTree. I used the Gedcom Splitter at http://www.llenrup.com/splitter which is a legitimate site.

I got my mother (at a different residence and hence a different internet connection) to upload the original (4000 ppl) gedcom file to her WikiTree site and she had the same issue. She tried a gedcom with only 800 people in it and it worked perfectly. We are both in a regional area in Queensland, Australia and I wonder if the internet settings and speeds may have played a part.

So, if you are looking for a reason behind errors occuring when uploading a gedcom file to WikiTree, try splitting the file. The smaller the amount of people uploaded in a Gedcom, the more likely the uploads will be successful.

Hi Lee - just successfully uploaded a gedcom through that site, so not sure what the issue might be.

Thanks Shirley. I really hope it's not just a problem on my end. That would mean I would need to fix it sad. Thank you for your reply smiley.
