I'm not certain if it will hold any clues, but Univ of Chicago library,  try typing in William Smith, publications, ascending order (odd how many smiths and publications, usually starting around london, then up to scotland, few other spots, then pre and post american revolution, even from Ireland!-and the way some titles and authors names went, almost as if odd messages or editorial comments upon religion or politics-if so, tad bit sarcastic LOL). please note that there was also a William Smith connected with the Univ of PA (that Ben Franklin was none too fond of) that was also working desperately to have things published in key locations on the north american continent.  -not just William Smith at any locations.  Noting my own genealogy and our history, it is indeed intriguing the names...

More clues? http://www.idreamof.com/irish/marriages.htm SKOTTOE, Edmond and SMITH, M., third daughter of the late William Smith, at Waterford JUN 1808 SMITH, Dr., from Golden Bridge and Miss O'DONNELL OCT 1800 SMITH, Mr. Jr. from Nassau St. and MCKEN, Eliza NOV 1808. Is that perhaps a William Jr? Oddest thing about weddings, regardless of where the bride and groom may live, one must never overlook the fact that as the ceremony is traditionally paid for by the parents of the bride, the wedding is more apt to be where her people are from...not necessarily his (and some of my smith relatives seem to have gotten married at least one county away from their home county...small town gossip fears maybe, or just so many of them at home they got claustrophobic?)
