can I add individuals to the Tree who are not part of my family

Since you are new to Wikitree I’d suggest adding some members of your own family that you have good documentation for first.  That way you can get a feel for the data entry and biography building that are unique to Wikitree before you branch out.

I do it all the time.  We are all part of one family. It just becomes difficult to provide a paper trail. But take some caution on adding anyone is is alive or could be alive. It is not specifically banned but it is not encouraged. You want to respect the privacy of people who are living.
