how did the name Dowdell come to be part of many Hornsby names?

I am a Hornsby by birth.  I have noticed the middle name of Dowdell has been given to several Hornsby's.  Does anyone know where and why the name is there?  I am sure it must have some history linked to it but I have been unable to find it.

Would this not be mum's maiden name? Rich aristocrat not wanting to lose ties to Dowdell line?? ;-)
