New to WikiTree - Starting on Keane family - James Keane originally from Ireland.

Question

Hi all, just new to WikiTree. Thanks for Ben Molesworth for his information and alerting me to this site. I've been working on my Genealogy for a while now and hitting some blocks. I have uploaded my GedCom file and while looking at this and comparing to see if any names can be merged, I noticed some that possibly are the same person - however, the information is incorrect or incomplete so I haven't merged mine with what's on WikiTree.

What is the best thing to do in this circumstance? e.g birthdates/area/death dates are incorrect (my direct ancestors) or just a name without any information.

Keryn - hi, and welcome to WikiTree.  Merging can get complicated.  Have you contacted the profile managers of the profiles concerned?  

Do you have sources for your profiles? (Census, birth, etc.) 

There's a WikiTree video on merging.  Don't let the length throw you.  It's divided into segments, so you can watch only the part you want to.

Thanks Karen for the advice. I think I may try and contact the profile manager.  I am not sure what the arborist group is...but I'm sure I'll find out!. I do have a lot of sources as I am on Ancestry and a few other sites and have quite a few sites I am a member of which allows me to copy or download information.  I will certainly get around to watching that video.

Yes welcome, you will be 100% satisfied with Wikitree, even if you don't get all the answers. What you will get is if done properly a correctly sourced tree.  May I also say to remember that there may be two people with the same name and date of birth. So don't take for granted it is the first name you see when searching. I would recommend that for fun and to learn new skills that you put aside some time for the competitions such as sourcing sprints and  the data doctors will teach you  how to do documentation well.  Oh, I have Kean's /Keane/ Keen in my family too.

Thanks Rionne. It's a lot to take in on this site and actually very hard to navigate. It will take some time to sort out. I have a lot of source material, so that won't be a problem.

Hi Keryn!  Welcome to WikiTree.  Be sure to check out the sources for each profile.  While most have good intentions, not all are well sourced or even sourced at all.  Don't forget to get involved, ask questions, and have fun!

To add to the other welcomes and answers, there are likely members of the Irish Roots group who might be able to help with your blocks.

As you rightly observe, there is a lot to take in on Wikitree so when you're ready, leave a comment or drop a message and hopefully we can steer you in the right direction.
