Project: Remember the Children [closed]

I was hoping to find some volunteers to help improve profiles of children who passed before their 18th birthday. These profiles often gets neglected for various reasons and it would be so nice to give these "little" profiles the love and attention they so deserve.

Is anyone interested in joining?

I already do whatever I can to give some love and attention to those who {{Died Young}}.  I have a few images I use for profile pictures, depending on age .. and a few background images (although I have not uploaded all that I have).

I just finished a couple of profiles today for very young children.

The girl got as her profile pic

Her brother got for his.

I have done butterflies for profile pics and backgrounds, as well as clouds and stars on colour.

I also use this one for babies

Those are really sweet!

I also have

and

plus some public domain vintage images.

There are also some that were on Wikitree before I joined last year ..  and probably one of the most popular:

Thanks for showing me these I have only come across a few of these, I am currently looking for suitable pictures for mothers who passed in child birth, as this is are often connected to a lot of the children. I would like to find pictures that are nationality neutral, so it can be used globally.

For example someone from an Islam family would probably not want Christian symbolism on say their great great granduncles profile. And it would be equally insensitive to put pictures of a Caucasian child on the profile of say an Indian profile.

But I am Swedish so I am sure I can find something neutral out there! laugh

So many great options! Going to be hard to pick one! ;)
Melanie, do you have a link to where these pictures are hosted? I am just one member (and a co-leader) away from having the project qualify as a top level project! Exciting!

My images are on my space page.

The other two, the ones I found on Wikitree, are https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/5/5c/Simple_Backgrounds-261.jpg

and https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/e/e5/Beck-792.png

There are backgrounds and other images also in WT (but don't ask me where they are, I never remember even if I bookmark them).

You might also like a couple of silhouettes I made:

Thank you for this idea! I used your suggestions to clean up our little Theda (Rogers-26336) and will give special attention to the others as I find them.

Please clarify the purposes of the categorization you're considering.  Remember that categories are aimed to help people find profiles. How many people would be looking to find all profiles of people who died young in, say, Buffalo, NY ?
Antonia - - what happened to all the comments on the old space page?
It looks like the space page got redirected to a project page, which doesn't have the comments feature.
Correct, I am hoping that the comments can be recovered somehow (copied) there was a lot of posts of beautiful profiles in it that would be nice to keep.

The FS project got moved to Global and is now a more complete project.
I am aware it has been moved to a project page, and that project pages do not have the comment feature.

I was wanting the comments that used to be on it when it was a space page.  A lot of work went into some of those comments.
Also -- what happened to the images that were on the space page?  Did they get migrated somewhere else, or did they get deleted?

Happy to hear that, thanks!
How should I sign up...or do I just go about adding to the profiles? I've been recently working on adding those who died in the Hospital Cottages for Children in Massachusetts. Many died young, especially of epilepsy. Looking forward to following along and being a part of this project :)

I have updated the project page with a list of who is interested in joining, so I will definitely contact you when it gets on it feet, in the meantime you are more than welcome to get started! I have added a section the tools we can use, we have lists that can be set to age at death and even set to a location so if you want to focus on Massachusetts that's a great place to start. Plus setting a location will help us not bump into each other working on the same lists.

Let me know if there is anything you need!

I try to make them beautiful too :) Here is a link to some background images some of you may find useful - it was put together by Sandy Partak, and is an ongoing mission ...

 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Background_I/Child

Sandy's background pages have a myriad of beautiful and bright background images for all sorts of different profiles ... https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Background_I

EnJoy :)

Wow! Those are amazing and so many to choose from! I thought the reason you didn’t see background pictures much was because some people with slow connections might have a hard time loading the pages. At least I had someone remove some that I set up a few years ago.

I will definitely link to these pages. Thanks!
Thank you very  much for sharing.

I have added you to the members list! We don't have any specific ways to work, just to seek out and try to improve the look and the information of children's profiles.

Children who died under ten years old will often not appear on any census because they were born and died between two censuses.

An exhaustive search of birth, baptism, death and burial records can be used to find them if such records give the names of the parents.

Burial and death records may say child of X. Some records give age at death.

Some specific tips for England and Wales.

If the mother is recorded in the 1911 census, look at the original record for number of children both living and dead born to her. (May only cover current marriage.)

The GRO site has a birth index that can be searched using both father's surname and mother's maiden name. (Try with sounds like too.) This can dramatically cut down the possible candidates.

I just came across this poem (Author Unknown) for a child who passed and thought it might make a good addition to Remember The Children:

"I'll lend you for a little while...."

That is so beautiful..

It reminds me of a movie I watched that was set into the 1800’s where a preacher’s wife had had many miscarriages and was struggling with having answers as to why God did not want her to have a child.

The woman she was revealing this to told her that God loved her so much that He chose her to carry many children, so that they could enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Now I’m not a religious person, but it struck a chord.

People might think that mothers and fathers did not get attached to their children back in old times because it was so common that they did not survive. But that doesn’t ring true to me. They just had a different way to deal with it, and different answers to the question of why...
I think childbirth was anxious times for mothers. Not only they could loose a child, but they could also die themselves.
Antonia I think you're right about that, parents having different ways to deal with the loss of a child back then.
Jonathan, yes definitely. My grandmother died 11 days after my mother was born and that was in 1942.
