William E(dward) Gibson is my maternal grandfather and is a brick wall in my research. He married Marie Marquis in Minnesota (Paul, Mina, Eleanor children), but she died in 1922. He married Stella Hedges. William died in 1939. His father has been reported as being born in Maine, Canada, and Scotland.

William E Gibson, United States Census, 1880 at Washburn, Aroostook, Maine. Age 3, white, son. Parents in this 1880 census are said to have been born in Canada. William has a very young brother who was born in Maine. The brother is not yet named as of the time of the census. The parents are George Gibson age 27 and Mary Gibson age 22.

Maine Vital Records has Maria's maiden name as Brooks.
Thank you so very much, Frank
This, too, has confused me. There is another Gibson family with a George and a Maria and a son William. If I recall correctly, these Gibsons were in a different Maine village/city/town, but also in Aroostock.

William E. Gibson, United States Census, 1900, Calais city Ward 1-4, Washington, Maine. Age 24, single, white, son, birth date May 1876. Parents are George S Gibson 48 and Maria Gibson 43. The parents birth place is Canada and I think that the Eng is the language they speak rather than where they are from. William has a younger brother, George W. Gibson who is 13 and born in Maine.

George Gibson is a Bridge Builder for the Railroad, William is a House Carpenter, and his younger brother is at school.
Frank, This Gibson family is some of my confusion. I believe these Gibsons are different from the Gibsons you and Ruben have suggested are mine. My late mum mentioned a Rose in her biological father's family, but she remembered the name as being associated with her father's mother, not his sister. At any rate, with the input from you and Ruben, I am going to pursue the Washburn family with Mary Cary as the mother of William, Lillian, and Wilmet. Thank you so very much!

Hello Janette.

Certainly William E Gibson was the son of George H Gibson and Mary Cary.

He was the brother of Lillian Rosella Gibson.

The 1880 Census record in the first answer by Frank is the right one.

George Gibson Self M 27 Canada
Mary Gibson Wife F 22 Canada

As can be seen in the 1900 Census, the unnamed baby boy Gibson listed in the 1880 Census was named Wilmet and was born on March 1880. He is listed in line no. 96 in the census schedule (see the original document).

Lillian Rosella is listed as Rose in line no. 97. By mistake, she is said to have been born on Sep 1882. Lillian Rosella was born on Sep 1885 in the very same place where the family was living in the 1880 Census: Washburn, Aroostook Co., ME.
