Can't find Henry Hoy in the FH 1860 US Census [closed]

Question

I've become fairly adept at finding Family History US Census records when starting from the corresponding Ancestry record, but this one has me stumped:

I've found the 1860 record on Ancestry:

Name: Henry Hoy

Age: 49

Birth Year: abt 1811

Gender: Male

Birth Place: Pennsylvania

Home in 1860: Silver Spring, Cumberland, Pennsylvania

Post Office: New Kingston

Dwelling Number: 294

Family Number: 321

Census Place: Silver Spring, Cumberland, Pennsylvania; Roll: M653_1102; Page: 622; Family History Library Film: 80510

But, I can't find it on Family History.  I've searched by both film number and residence.

Can anyone find this?

Hi Bill,

Here's the image of the census record at FS. It appears the names on that page at FS didn't get indexed. I found it by just searching for the location to get into the collection on FS and then scrolling to the corresponding page on Ancestry. You can copy/paste the FS citation for the page from the Information tab.

One thing I try is I look up another name from the same page and then go back to family search. Go to the original image. Ind the index the index that is below the image find the name you want. There’s a column to the left of the name , if you hover over it an icon will appear that will take you to that record. Works 95 percent of the time for me. Sometimes I can’t figure out why it didn’t come up in my original search

Thanks M Cole and Rick.  Yes, I tried searching the other names on the same page and none of them retrieved anything. So, it looks like you're correct, Rick, about the page not being indexed on FH.  I'll replace my Ancestry link with the FH link on Henry Hoy's profile.  Whoops.  I spoke to soon.  Using the FH URL returns an "internal server error", so I guess it's back to the Ancestry shared image.

I'm not not sure which URL returned an "internal server error" for you. Both the link that I provided in my answer above and the link copied from the citation (contains extra parameters) appear to work fine for me.

Yes, I first tried using the longish URL found in the citation under the "Information" tab.  That's the one the failed.  The URL you included in your response works fine and I'm now using that.  Thanks again!  Bill

I've done some digging into your mystery  The FHL number you listed is incorrect.  It should be 805102.  Also, the image of the record shows the page is considered illegible.  So, you might not find any names, but only "illegible".  I could pull up the 1860 Census record for that township, but couldn't locate the right family.  Perhaps you'll have better luck, if you're still looking.

Hi Karen.  Thanks so much for your efforts. Rick Peterson found the page on FH by paging through to the page seen on Ancestry (image 16 of 58):

Henry Hoy is certainly there (line 29).  And you're correct, the page is marked as illegible and, I assume, not indexed because of that.  But, I've seen worse legibility.  Guess we need to chalk this up to FH idiosyncrasy.  I've found FH census indexing to be considerably less reliable than Ancestry's.

The FH film number discrepancy is on me.  I inadvertently truncated the final digit when copy/pasting from the Ancestry citation.

Very interesting.  Someone gave up pretty quickly if they considered that illegible.  I'm grateful that they've added an Edit option to much of their indexing, but I guess there's nothing you can do to alert them that something is incorrectly NOT indexed.

Yes, the FH editing functionality should be very useful.  That said, I've yet to find a record that's eligible for it.
