Alfred Griffiths and Family: Canada

+2 votes

I am seeking a little assistance from Canadian members please.   I have an Alfred Griffiths b. 1892 (son of Richard and Anne Griffiths), with siblings Edward b. 0ct 1884, Florence b. 1886, Richard b. 1889, and William b. 1895, who married Daisy Letitia Field (b. Quebec 12 Sep 1893), to whom I am very distantly related.   Richard senior may have origins in Wales.

The origins of Alfred are sought.   It would appear that the mother and five children migrated to Canada on board the SS Numidian, departing Liverpool 29 June 1889.  It would also appear the children originated in Lancashire, but I can only find this set of children born to mother maiden name Griffiths.  It is conceivable that Richard and Ann either shared the same surname or that the children were born out of wedlock, because no marriage was found (that fits).

Confirmation is sought of the arrivals of the family in Montreal Canada, but am not having much success.   I am hopeful that the mother’s maiden name be confirmed, to enable tracking back on any marriage between Richard and Anne, and their parentage in possibly in Wales.

I would also like to establish a marriage date and place for Alfred to Daisy – the both appear in Canadian Census 1901 in the Hochelaga, Quebec district.

Any information on descendants would of course be very welcome.   I am struggling a little to come to grips with Canadian ancestry sources.

I found a christening index entry here: "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch( : 11 February 2018, Alfred Griffiths, 01 Dec 1892); citing item 5-114331, index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 2,147,930.

For the marriage of Richard Griffiths FreeBMD offers two marriages in Wales in the 1880s. One is this one and the other one is that one.

Hope that helps a bit in your research

Thank you Jelena... I did pick up on the Richard Griffiths to Mary Anne Davies 11A/1043 - but have since discounted this becuase I was not able to find Griffiths births with mother's LNAB Davies which fit the family set.

The other entry was a little later than birth of first two children.

Thanks for your suggestions... much appreciated

The marriage is listed:

DATE OF MARRIAGE: 21/06/1920

Wpg is Winnipeg, Manitoba.

You can find this at

You can find them in 1921 census with one month old Lillian at

Census was conducted June I, so Lillian's birthday must have been late April, early May.

The entire LAC site is valuable for Canadian searches:

The above is the 1901 census showing them.  I draw your attention to the date of immigration noted, which was 1899.
