Interesting question. I'm sorry I missed seeing it when it was posted (I was out of the country with limited Internet at the time, and since there were not G2G tags on it, it didn't ever appear in the G2G feeds I follow).
Westward Ho is not totally closed, but it does not have a Project Leader, so it has a hard time functioning as a project. Because it's one of projects under the large umbrella of the United States Project (or which I am Project Leader), I get asked to do things for it from time to time, but I didn't ever sign up to lead it.
There is a top-level Project Coordinator for Westward Ho and there are Project Coordinators for some of the sub-projects. See Project: Westward Ho to see who they are and what they are working on. Experienced WikiTree contributors with an interest in specific sub-areas (or a broad interest in Westward Ho!) are welcome to volunteer as additional Coordinators -- and anyone can jump in and start working, with or without an official designation. There are very few activities that require an official leader.
The badge-request threads were closed due to lack of a Project Leader, but I've awarded several Westward Ho! badges to members who found ways to bypass the closed thread. I guess I'll create a new badge-request thread -- and I urge people who are interested in this topic to demonstrate some pioneer spirit by taking project activities into your own hands. For example:
- Create new information pages (as free-space profiles) about topics of interest.
- Contact other members of the project (see the badge list to identify them) about possible shared interests
- Initiate G2G discussions with other Westward Ho! volunteers regarding the scopes of the various sub-projects, topics that deserve to be explored, overall direction of the project, or ???
