My great grandfather was named Aaron Jacobowitz, he immigrated to the US from Hungary (?) or Romania (?) sometime before 1888. He married a Sarah (no surname) and had 3 children, One was Benjamin Aaron Jacobowitz.  My grandfather, Benjamin was born in Kings County, New York. I would so appreciate any information. Thank you!

In 1920 census Aaron and daughter Jennie, are living with Aaron's son George and George's wife Ida nee Finkelstein

New Jersey.

George born 1875 Austria, emigrated 1889, so Aaron came first then wife and son followed in a few years ?
From various census records, Aaron born April 1855, emigrated to USA in 1883

Occupation given as rabbi on census
Aaron may have had a brother Hermann born 1856, lived in Manhattan,  and Connecticutt, emigrated 1891
Curious side note

From 1901 to 1906, Ben's sister Sophie was in a Hebrew Orphan's Asylum. Records say father Aaron, and committed by Mr. Pollak
There don't seem to be any online birth records for Aaron's American born children. Ancestry only directs to "purchase certificate" from NY
That would be accurate!
Ancestry and family search trees giving Ben's mother as Sarah Wick or Hannah Middleman are erroneous. There is no evidence for Wick and Middleman married an Aaron Jacobowitz, Philadelphia Pennsylvania
You may find other background through jewishgen.org

It looks like Ben had a lot of European cousins lost in the Holocaust camps.
Thank you!

You are incredible! So much information that i jave failed to locate these last 2 years! One thing, on Ben's draft card, it said he was born in King's County, NY, so I'm curious about iy saying he was born in Austria.  Family story says that Aaron had another family before immigrating and married Sarah here. A distant cousin if my Father's contacted him in the late 90's or early 00's. She had just moved to the States and was living in FL. She told him that most of her siblings died in the camps in WWII. Hmmm.
Ben's Army records all state a NY birth.

The institutionalization of his sister Sophie - the Asylum had a medical ward. She appears to have been a patient, perhaps polio or tuberculosis, which were epidemic in that decade
Esther may have been Aaron's sister. Her birth name is listed as an alternative to Jacobowitz. Other spellings coming up are Jakobowitz, Jakubowitz, Jakubowicz, Jacubowitz
Eddie, I have much to learn from you. Thank you!
When searching Ellus Island records, I only used the Jacobowitz spelling and was not confident about the 37 passengers they listed. These alternate spellings will help tremendously!
You can begin a "one name study" project for the variations and original. All you can find in ancestry, family search, jewishgen. They probably all tie in together
For searches, Austria and Hungary records are co-mingled name wise  - the Austro Hungarian Empire. Also check records for people in Bohemia, also in Empire and co-mingled.

And if the American name is like Joseph, check for Yiddish variations like Josef , Yusef, David check Dawid, Moses check Moishe, Murray or Morey check Moritz , Benjamin might be Baruch , Abraham check Avram & Ibrahaim etc

I learned working in the Holocaust Project Jewish names aren't always what you think they are LOL !
Appreciate the heads up. Looking into Family Search where i found Ester! Now to dig further! Haven't been so excited in years!
