Mathurin Chabot was born in Luçon in 1637, the son of Jean Chabot and Jeanne Rodier. Research conducted on his family in France yielded information on his mother's family, but not on his father's, see http://www.unicaen.fr/mrsh/prefen/notices/1087mc.pdf
WikiTree does give Jean Chabot parents, and indeed a whole ancestry, conveniently linking him to a family of ennobled notables of Niort, and further to the seigneurs de l'Aleu, a branch of the famous Chabot family which gave, among others, the Rohan-Chabot family (these Chabots were previously connected as descendants of Guillaume "Fier-à-Bras" d'Aquitaine, but this has been discounted).
- Are there any sources supporting that Jean Chabot, father of Mathurin Chabot, was the son of Jacques Chabot and Jeanne Jacques?
- WikiTree has the unsourced Jacques Chabot as son of Jacques Chabot and Catherine Dubois. The usually reliable Beauchet-Filleau, specialist of Poitou, states that this couple had no children (see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chabot-132).
- The same Jacques Chabot, husband of Catherine Dubois, was previously linked to a second wife (not mentioned by Beauchet-Filleau), Anne Auphilly. Online genealogies for Mathurin Chabot often make him the descendant of Anne Auphilly (or Auphily) rather than Catherine Dubois. Anne Auphily and Jacques Chabot are very (very) present in online genealogies, but seem more linked to La Rochelle than Luçon and I could not really see sources for the couple.
So there are two dubious generations linking Jean Chabot, father of Mathurin Chabot, to the documented Chabot family of Niort.
This documented Chabot family from Niort is, further, erroneously connected to the Chabot-l'Aleu family through a conflated profile, Antoine Chabot. This is, however, easier to sort out.
Can someone shed light on Jean Chabot's origins and the mysterious Anne Auphily?
