We need lists of approved Categories & Templates

I have avoided trying to use categories, most templates, and stickers as I never seem to create them correctly (they show up as red).

What we need is lists of approved ones -- they would be long lists -- that we can search and find what we need with the correct form.

I have numerous Olmstead and Olmsted family members who have served in governmental office (US Senators, Congressmen, Governors, etc.) and would like to so indicate on their profiles in addition to what is included in the biographical text.

I'm sure you aren't doing them incorrectly.  It's just that they're like making a paper chain for a garland; no point making just one paper 'ring', you have to link it to the next one.
If you are looking for categories that are most likely already in existence, like politicians in higher levels, on a different tab you can simply click on the ''Find'' menu, then in sequence click succeding stages: ''Categories'', ''Occupations'' ''Politicians'', that one gives you senators, governors etc.

Templates statuses can be found on the Database Errors Definitions pages. As an example, all stickers can be found at this page.

If the status column says either "Approved", "Project", or "System" you can rest assured that they are ready and able to be used. Just click on the name of the template in the left column and it will take you to that template's page and it should give you instructions for using it.

If the status column is blank has a "?", "Review", or any other status then they are not yet ready or approved. These pages are what drive the template error suggestions, so this is the definitive list to work from.

They can be rather tricky and I've found the surest method is to find an existing profile using the one I want, go into edit mode, and copy it. Categories are surrounded by [[ ]] and templates and stickers have {{ }}. If it is red then it takes it as a new one that is not connected. If that is not your intent, it acts as a warning. If you are creating a new one, then click the red link, and link THAT page to a part of the tree it would be a subgroup of.

Sometimes you just need to look through and see what is available.

All 600+ categories for USA politicians can also be found in tree view on one single page with this query on WikiTree+

Click "Find categories" and then the tree icon on the result page to get the expanded tree view.

The major problem with Categories is that anyone can move them around. For instance, I could place a free-space page under "Category:WikiTree Help", but that does not mean it is an official Help page.

This is true of Templates that are place within Categories as well. For instance, Category:Stickers is meant to be the exhaustive listing of all templates that use the base Sticker template - and it is not meant to show all approved stickers.

More information on Templates/Stickers and where to find the approved lists are in my answer below.

These can be confusing.  For categories,  try using the category button in the tool bar above the text edit box. Start typing and a list will appear with ones close to what you are typing.

Yep, just like Steve said... wink

actually, I was talking about browsing through, Peggy was talking about the second button to the right at the top of the "edit text" box. It's the one just to the left of the big C.
But she gave exactly the same links that you did, to Stickers, Templates, and Categories.  Looks like she has changed her entire answer now.
Yes, I did, when I realized the links were already there!
