Hello everyone, I think this photo fits the theme because you can clearly see how much the people pictured care for each other and enjoy eachother's presence. The only person I recognize is my great great aunt [[Uusitalo-27|Lindy (Uusitalo) Johnson]]. The back of the photo says Lindy, Jonesy, Ada. It makes me curious who Jonesy and Ada were because they seem so close to Lindy.

This is part of one of the 36 letters that my mother, Clarice, saved telling her how much she is loved by my father, Chick Lovelace. The photo below was taken a short time after this letter was written.

by Alexis Nelson G2G6 Pilot (847k points)
selected by SJ Baty
Alexis what a treasure to have a handwritten letter it is so sweet

Your parents was wonderful they really look so happy

Thank You for sharing this wonderful photo
Thank you Susan for your sweet comment.  I have always felt that they really loved each other.

What a handsome couple!  He looks to be a Staff Sergeant (E6) in this photo with his Army Air Corps patch above his ranck.

I always feel that it is such a tragedy that he passed, barely a newlywed and father.  I am always taken back when I read about him and your mom and this photo is especially tough - they looked so happy.  War is a terrible thing.

On a less sad note, Sheppard Field is now Sheppard Air Force Base - where American Air Force pilots still learn how to fly.  The base has the unique distinction of being the only American military base to have a commercial airport, Wichita Falls Municipal Airport (airport designator SPS) located inside of its perimeter.  Sheppard has the largest Air Force training wing in the country and is a also a designated Euro-NATO pilot training center.

the legacy endures...

Thank you SJ for your wonderful comments. I can tell the dates of the photos by the rank on his shoulder, since he has another stripe for Master Sergeant in 1945. Yes, I agree that war is a terrible thing.
Thank you, Alexis, for sharing more of your parents' life. The letter is full of love and the photo shows love as well. Thank you for continuing to share your parents with us.
SJ, I also wanted to tell you that in 1969 my husband went though Air Force helicopter training at Shepard. He first trained in the Huey and then in the HH-43 that he flew in Vietnam.

   the legacy certainly endures...
Thank you Robin for your lovely comments about my parents.
A perfect contribution for this week's theme, Alexis.
Thank you Laurie. I like that he says she is adorable.
Alexis, such a wonderful story for the week "Love". Thank you very much for sharing.
Thank you Cheryl. In other letters he refers to her as a gorgeous redhead like you.
Oh, Alexis, you are a sweetheart. Thank you.
Had to go read his story on his profile. How sad! Another example of the horrors of war. The same sorts of loss is happening daily in Afghanistan, Israel/Palestine, some parts of Africa, and on the border of the USA and Mexico, and many other places. Hence, I go to protests and sign petitions and write letters...
Yes Alison, it is very sad that we in this world can not just love one another and live in harmony, but all we can do is to try to make the world a better place as best we can. Thank you for your kind comment.

My  great-aunt Agnes and her youngest son Jack about 1899. At this time she was a widow supporting seven children, yet she took the time to make her youngest feel special by having their photo taken together.

A little different approach to the subject of "Love".  A family location story where much loved was shared.

My grandfather, Harold "Hal" Knott Rammel, built what became known as the "Family Cottage".  This was in the early 1920s.  It was located on the norther tip of Lake Michigan ... the nearest town is Escanaba.

Unfortunately, Hal died in 1930 ... at the young age of 37 ... so my grandmother, Oma M Alliso-Rammel, had to move back to Illinois with her three young kids.  She needed family support there and had an Illinois teachers Certificate.

However, the cottage became a gathering place for many family members and friends.  Oma, as a school teacher, had the summer off and spent most of the time there.

There was always family and friends visiting there from all over the country.

I lived in NM at the time.  But, I recall as a youngster spending several summer there while.  It was the time of year I also loved.

A good and very talented friend built a replica of the cottage.  She built the building and all the furnishings exactly to scale.  The roof could be removed to see all the rooms and and the furniture inside.

The cottage provided many fond memories for many of the love ones to join together and share family time.

Below is a photo of the cottage replica and a couple of the interior rooms.

This is wonderful, Bill. I wish my family had had a model made before our cottage was sold. What a great idea.
Beautiful model!

I would love to have met my paternal great-grandparents.  They were very much in love and even eloped away to Illinois to get married when forbidden by their parents.  They loved each other until the end and had 12 children, 11 that made it to adulthood.  I would love to have met them and lament that I never did.

My grandfather migrated out west at the close of World War II and our branch of the family lost track of the other 10 siblings of my grandfather.  Unfortunately, but the time I found them all, great-grandmother had passed.  What was the most painful is that she was well alive into my lifetime and if I had even known about her, I could have just picked up the phone and said hello and sent her some letters.  I am always sad that I missed that chance and vow to make sure my kids have the opportunity to meet all of their living ancestors while they can.

SJ that is so very sad that your great grandmother Lola was still alive, and you did not get the opportunity to know her. She must have been a very strong lady to have had twelve children. Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo of her and your great grandfather, and it is so very good that you want your children to know their ancestors.
I'm sorry you missed the opportunity to get to know them, SJ, because they look like lovely people.
SJ wow what a fantastic story getting married when they parents has forbidden that and then married anyhow getting 12 children this is a amazing story thank You for sharing this

This week I'd like to share my maternal grand-parents, Otis and Bertha Witcher's Wedding Photo.

They were married at the ages of 21 and 17.  They were married for 63 years and were still very happy together.  I remember spending many happy days with them at their home in rural Colorado.

by Robin Shaules G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
I love this photo. There's a casual air about it that's unusual for the time. I can well imagine that their home was a happy one.
Thank you, Laurie. Yes, there was always something going on at their home, and there was always someone there -- children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. I remember it as always being a happy and fun place to be.
Robin, 63 years of marriage is so wonderful. Wish we could all say that we were happily married that long.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful picture with us.
Thank you, Cheryl! You're very kind. Well, if we live long enough, maybe....
Robin, I know I won't make it. I would be well over 100. lol

These are my grandparents, Ralph and Reamer Underwood.

This was taken outside the home my grandmother's father built in 1901 with the assistance of my grandfather's father. My grandparents were on their way to Grandpa's 90th birthday celebration. They were married for 66 years until Grandpa's death in 1986. Until I got married and had children, these two people were the ones I loved most in the world.

Grandma told me I could not get married until I was as old as Grandpa was when he married her. It turned out just like that. Grandpa and I were both 32 years old when we got married to our respective spouses.

by Pip Sheppard G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story and photo.
Yes, thanks Pip. Your grandfather was a very natty dresser. Love the tie and the flower in the buttonhole.
Thanks, Laurie! I think that was his best suit. See the watch on my Grandma’s necklace? I have that watch. And though you can’t see it, I also have the pinkie ring my Grandpa was wearing. My mom gave both of these to me.
They look like such a wonderful couple. I love their story and that they were married for 66 years.

Really a wonderful goal.

Thank you for sharing the picture and the lovely story.
Pip your grandparents are adorable, imagine your grandmothers fathers build the house

Thank You for sharing
I have such fond memories of them and that house, Susan! The house still stands, but it is a business. Fortunately, the home was saved and upgraded, one of the last of the old homes in the neighborhood. The owner loves it when descendants drop by to see it.
Pip of course you do special when it is your grandmother father built it

Don’t you wish you own the house and it was when your grandmother live there
Oh, you bet I wished I owned that old house!

In week 22 (Wedding) I told you about my parents' love story: the way in which my mother, at 8, fell in love with her 'stepcousin', who at that time, being a teenager, did not have time for children.

Here I show you a picture of them two together, when love was about to appear. In 1965 he probably had another girlfriend, but in 1967 he proposed and just a year later, in 1968, they got married.

Like Margarita, I am going to continue a story from "Week 22: Wedding".

Here is a reprint of the photo from before, the wedding photo of my uncle Willis and his bride, Kathy.

500px-52_Photos_Week_22_Wedding-2.jpg

My aunt Kathy had a nervous breakdown in the 1950's, after they had been married a few years, when she took her three young children to visit her father, and the visit did not go so well. Katherine's mother had died when she was young, and she was raised by an aunt, in Oregon. All Kathy knew of her mother was that she had died when she was too young to remember.

Her father blamed her for her mother's death, which, it turns out, was 3 weeks after Kathy was born, and likely related to the birth. So much for a nice visit to introduce the grandkids. My uncle had to fly out and retrieve her and the kids.

In those days, they gave shock treatments, which were much stronger that what is sometimes used today. Kathy did not remember that she was married and had kids. She had to re-learn how to cook and sew. It also changed her personality somewhat. Yet, through all that, my uncle loved her, and they rebuilt their marriage and family, and she soon came to love him, again.

Here they are at their 40th anniversary:

500px-52_Photos_Week_34_Love-3.jpg

And their 50th:

500px-52_Photos_Week_34_Love-4.jpg

Willis died soon after their 50th anniversary.

Thank you Alison for sharing your aunt and uncle's story. Poor Kathy having to go through what she went through, but Willis was a wonderful man to stand by her and love her.

Here is first of the many letters sent from my grandfather Arthur Pountney, in 1925, to my grandmother Myrtle, which she had saved, from before their marriage, and up to and including, a couple from 1942, some still in the envelopes, wrapped in a ribbon, inside a tin, and found a dressing table drawer, while sorting out the house in 1982. To save space, the other half of the letter, is here.

These are my paternal grandparents, Louisa Banks Flintoff Shane and Ralph Stewart Shane.  They were engaged when Ralph went off to serve in France in WWI and I am blessed to have inherited the love letters that he sent to her from overseas. It is very special to me to know that my grandfather fell in love with and married Louisa even though she had contracted polio as a child and could only walk with the use of crutches from that time on.  I have posted many photos of Louisa here since I inherited both of their photo albums, so I have a rich source.  In many of these photos, Louisa is posed in positions and places that she could not have gotten into without help because of her handicap.  This photo is the only one that I have that has any sign of her crutches!
