I am 18 degrees from Virginia Fields through my Hinds ancestry and her husband's,

It's too bad degrees have no connection to genealogy. Some seem to think it's really meaningful.
18 degrees here but no relation.
I am 15 degrees, all fathers mothers and siblings.

Furthermore, I just looked, and we're 7th cousins via Benjamin Rush Sr.

At most it's something that's possibly vaguely interesting; using the "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon" method (met/knew X who knew Y who knew Z) I'm 4 degrees from a pretty siginficant number of 19th century historical figures ( me > my grandfather > his great-uncle Levin C. Handy > his uncle Mathew B. Brady > Abraham Lincoln, US Grant, Robert E Lee, Edward VII, etc).

18 degrees of separation, no closer. We're 7th cousins 1 generation removed, according to the relationship finder, as we both have Elkins in our respective trees. .
David, we actually are 10th cousins 4x removed. It could have changed as I had a brick wall break-down and was able to tie into a line already here on my Henderson/Thornton line. Will have to check on your connection through my husband - haven't done that yet.

19 for me, way out there, even sharing Southern heritage.

you make me so jealous, considering 19 to be "way out there".  I'm in the 30's, just like I am from pretty much everyone (except for family I have added) except for the ones that I'm in the 40's from.
You must have pretty unique genealogy to be 30s/40s in the Connection Finder!
Gaile's genealogy isn't necessarily unique. It's just very, very hard to find her ancestors!

Not even close to 18. I'm 22 degrees from Virginia. Not many known connections between my Yankee ancestry and the U.S. South.
by Ellen Smith G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Ahhh but Ellen. This Southern Girl has that one line (Weeks-Hicks) in Massachusetts, whose descendants drifted Southward. I did not study our connection too closely but that is somehow the way you and I are connected!

That ancestral line of yours is one of the rare exceptions, Virginia. smiley

My connections to people with lots of New England ancestry usually are closer than 22 degrees. When I see a short connection-finder connection to a person without northern U.S. roots, it's likely to turn out to be due to a serious genealogical error. My valid connection-finder connections to people with Southern roots typically are through New Netherland descendant families that went to Virginia (areas that later became West Virginia) in the 1700s. I also have some Yankee relatives who settled in the South in the 1800s (some before the Civil War and some after), but they've not yet appeared in my connections to Connection Finder targets.

Chase, we are actually 10th cousins according to the connection finder.

All y'all may want to hold off on getting excited .. especially if your connection goes through Sidney King and his "sister":

imageRebecca Berry
(his daughter)

imageSidney King
(her husband)

imageHarriet Lethbridge
(his sister)

.

Because Harriet Lethbridge (married name King) is NOT his sister and is not related.  The DISconnection just doesn't show yet.

We are only 21 degrees from each other (for me through my Bulla family) but we are 11th cousins through the Chase family.

When I was awarded the honor of Member of the Week in August, I was away from email most of time for a few weeks - traveling. So, because someone commented on this post today, it popped up in my feed. I am so glad as I have enjoyed reading the answers and comments and checking on the relationships! Thank you all for posting.
