How to orphan a group of profiles

Question

I've looked and looked and can't figure out how to orphan a block of profiles.  I want to remove some of those I manage and would like to do it by last name.  Any help?  Googling "block changes" brings up blocking people, googling "mass changes" brings up Massachusetts stuff... etc etc etc.
