I don't understand the ref and sources thing.

Question

I created a bibliography for sources under references but I don't understand  your examples for making automatic sources that put a number up in the bio.  I tried typing in <ref> and the other command (I forget now what it was) but .they did not work I think we need step by step examples. All I can do is a real bibliography under sources and then add the citation number up in the biography. I don't get the automatic thing.I guess you mean those sources are the footnotes that refer to sources at the end of each chapter of a book. A bibliography is a group of sources also. I took a reference I had and moved it up to sources.....typed it in after and nothing happened in the bio. I' just can't do it. I'm totally lost. A bibliography is all I can do. I don't understand you examples. And what's a header? Someone corrected that for me and I thanked him....I can go on doing just bibilographies under references and add the little numbers up in the bio....computer talk, beyond excel and word are new to me. It's distracting me from the facts and truth and data I have....we adult learners learn by doing I think I learned in my Higher Ed classes....so I have been doing and experimenting...my science background...but I would like faster learning results. thanks so much

You might find some good examples by selecting a good profile at random and viewing it in edit mode.

To add a source, start with <ref>, add the source, and end with </ref>.

You also need to make sure that the Sources heading has under it <references/>.

Inline citations aren't a requirement, except for members of certain projects. You don't really need footnote numbers at all.

The advantage of inline citations over numbered footnotes is that if you later want to add another citation - or someone else does - then the numbers of the notes will automatically shift.  If you number your notes in the text, then want to insert another note ahead of it, your Note #1 may end up being in the second position, requiring you to re-number them all.

But you don't actually NEED numbers, especially on a simple bio.  You can just type under Sources - Birth - Birth source.  Education - Education source.  Etc.

If you decide on listing sources without the in-line citations, it would certainly be a good idea to indicate which source supported which fact.

Indeed.  But it can be done without numbering, if the person creating the bio prefers this and there aren't a lot of citations to make.

The footnotes labeled 1 and 2 will appear automatically in the order they appear in the body of the text. Under that I put a "See also:'' to list sources that are not cited in the text, but are still pertinent. You have to remember that <ref></ref> are called tags and are used in pairs. I call them open and close. They are probably better called start and stop or beginning and end. Also if you use the asterisk * it creates a bulleted list and spaces aren't needed.

Julie and Lois have given you good advice and instruction. I'm going to suggest you try again. If it doesn't work, don't change it but post again, giving a link to the profile you worked on. Then someone can take a look at your work to see what happened that it didn't work for you and advise you on what to do to make it work.

Your other question--"what's a header?"--a header is the title of a section or subsection. The two required headers (Biography and Sources) are already there for you if you are creating profiles manually. Those two headers begin with two equal signs and end with two equal signs. Don't erase anything that's there when you start and you will be fine. As you begin to get more comfortable and look at other profiles which others create, you may want to start adding subsections like "Birth," "Marriage," "Military Service," etc. Subsections have sub-headers (sub-titles) but the sub-headers start with three equal signs and end with three equal signs. A help page for using sub-headers and other advanced editing is HERE. However, if I were you (and I was once when I first started) I'd focus on just doing a very basic biography correctly first before you try to do any advanced editing. Be patient with us and yourself and you will learn just like we all did and still are.

Thanks. I'm going to start on my Stephen Baldwin Ford..my ggreatgrand...I have tons of sources and he is there and the profile needs work. I've been to the New Haven Museum and to Milford and Stephen is one of my favorite folks and one of my mom's favorite folks. She was so proud of her Fords from Milford,CT. If I had 2 computer screens where I could open up every source and pick facts for the bio..that would help. I used to have papers all around me when writing, to refer back to. different times!  I'll figure it out. And I will study Nils...….that is so helpful.. My Swedes are more fragmented and harder for me to do. Nils mean so much to me because he was a great Uncle I never knew about until I searched and he was way out in MN....I wish my dad had known about him.
