Wow amazing photos Robynne thank You for sharing
Great pics!

The place name, the birds, the matching orange shirts!  It is a kaleidoscope of action!
Those "Shirts" are actually woollen gold jerseys my mother knitted!!!!

But thank you.
Oh and Cape Kidnappers? It's called that because the Maori locals tried to kidnap a young boy off the Endeavour when Captain James Cook was sailing around. True story!!!!  It is recorded in Cook's diaries.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Kidnappers

Robynne, you're 2 for 3, what about the birds!? cheeky

I belive that Gannets are "big birds"  with something like a 5 to 6 feet wing span - I think??  LOL

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gannet
I'm actually more shocked by those horrid brown bloomer shorts my younger sister and I were wearing.

I cringe whenever I look at the second photo.
Robynne, awesome pictures again this week. And I love your answers to the questions. It makes the pictures even more interesting.

Thank you for posting.

This is a photo taken about 1952 of my mother and her girlfriends from work when they took a vacation to Mexico City, Mexico. My mother is in the center with a big smile and dark lipstick.

by Alexis Nelson G2G6 Pilot (843k points)
What a fantastic photo Alexis with your mother and friends thank You for sharing another wonderful photo
Agree with Susan, wonderful photo.  Your mom sure did bounce back and have an interesting life!
Thank you Susan for being so sweet.
Thank you SJ. Yes, my mother had lots of other medical workers for friends, and she had a good social life.
Thank you for sharing this lovely photo, Alexis. It looks like everyone was having a wonderful time -- looks like fun.
I remember that she told me they had a wonderful time and went to a bullfight. I was about seven, and I remember worrying if they killed the bull. It is interesting what stays in children’s minds.
Alexis, you sure come up with photos the fit the subject. And everyone at the table is having a wonderful time. Laughter abounds.

Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Cheryl!!

A very memorial vacation was held as a family reunion in 2003.

The family congregated in Estes Park, Colorado.  This is a photo taken of the event.

Classic! Congratulations to whoever convinced every one to dress out.
Wonderful selection for vacation. Love their outfits.

Circa 1977 with the siblings.  Every summer we would make the two day drive to visit my grandparents who lived up in the mountains and had a river flowing through their back yard.  They were magical times.

Just look at those colours!!!!

And the Patches!!!!

And the stripes!!  LOL
This place looks magical for kids. And you all look so happy. Thanks for sharing this, SJ.
Very hip! I see all conifers, which made me check out your grandparents to see where they lived. Is this up in Siskiyou county? I live in Mendocino county, not too far away.
SJ you and your siblings are just adorable, no wonder you have this for your profile photo.
What a great photo.  You look like you are up to something or about to be up to something SJ. Thanks for sharing.

Now that you mention it, I'm looking at other family photos and in at least 1/2 of them I'm looking elsewhere.  Honing my multi-tasking skills no doubt cheeky

Now I know where that profile pic came from!

The woman with the white hair is my grandmother Margarita, and the young girl sitting on her right is my mother.

The other young woman is my grandmother's sister and the boys are her children.

Although my grandmother and her sister lived in different cities, they used to spend their vacations together. Years later, the grandchildren of both of us have also spent many summers together.

by Margarita LĂłpez Gila G2G6 Mach 1 (18.1k points)
Margarita, do you know where this photo was taken?
It is the beach of Nazaret, in Valencia (Spain). Currently, it no longer exists, because the expansion of the port of Valencia made it disappear. The photo is from 1965 approximately.

May I ask why you were interested to know? I'm curious about it.
Hi Margarita! I’m just curious like that. I have some older photos, and I’m not so sure where they were made. It’s the kind of thing I add to the back of photos now so the memory won’t be lost.

Two photos of my Grandfather Rob Boy with his siblings at Blowing Rock, North Carolina. This may have been just a day trip instead of an actual vacation. From a picture of my dad obviously taken the same day I am estimating this was 1952-1954. In the first picture are my Aunt Lula, Granddad, Aunt Edelle, and Uncle DC. The second picture adds Edelle's husband Lawrence Horton and my Grandmother.

by Emily Holmberg G2G6 Pilot (153k points)
Emily amazing photo I note there are people in the back in one and no one behind nor two The photos are wonderful

Thank You for sharing
Emily, my mom love Blowing Rock and used to visit it when she was in college at Appalachian State.

We took a family trip to Moody Beach, Maine back in the early 1990's.  It was a great trip!  This is my Mom enjoying the sun and the sand. She was in her early 50's when this was taken.  If she knew that I posted this, she would kill me.  She is in her 80's now and still looks fabulous.

by Caryl Ruckert G2G6 Pilot (205k points)
you really make me laugh Caryl about your mother would kill you, but your mother look wonderful
Caryl, I am 7th cousins with your mom, and I can not keep secrets.
Oh my god!  I am in trouble.  My mom is shy and reserved.  A perfect lady.  Me as her only daughter is none of those things.  lol
You are safe, I do not know your mom, but her and I do share a sixth great granfather; Showalter.
Nice to meet a Showalter cousin Rodney.  Which Showalter connects us?  Abe? :)
Jacob
"Mom"-- You look great in this photo and it stirs memories in every (!) woman about their younger selves. Thanks for sharing!!

[ I have a scanner that I don't know how to work and I have photos. The photo above, Caryl, presents a sincere, if inadvertent, PROMPT to the rest of us lazy lassies to find photos and try something tech-y !!!  We should all have at least that smidgeon of Public Presence in our young lives.]

Here are some photos from my grandparents (Peter Stoner and Edith Forrey) from their camping trip to Yosemite in July of 1917. Unfortunately, they are a bit faded, being over 100 years old. My grandfather taught school, and had summers off, so they usually went on a camping trip somewhere.

Thanks to the generosity of Rob Neff, I now have much clearer photos. I am leaving one of the old copies in, for comparison.

500px-52_Photos_Week_35_Vacation-11.jpg500px-52_Photos_Week_35_Vacation-4.jpg

I cannot identify everyone in the above photo, due to the poor quality. My grandfather is seated, 2nd adult from the right, holding a child, which looks too large for his daughter. His brother's and sister's families appear to be here, also.

Now that I have the clearer copy, I can identify, left to right: child Paul Stoner, his mother Ethel, his sister Edith, his brother Henry, his cousin John Secrist, Paul's father George Stoner, John's sister Mae Secrist, I'm not sure with her back to us (might be my great grandma Julia Forrey), my grandfather Peter holding someone else's kid, and someone else I can't recognize. Much better!

500px-52_Photos_Week_35_Vacation-12.jpg

Here is a giant sequoia with one of the family cars driving through it. This is probably the Wawona tree, in Mariposa grove. I believe I saw this same tree when I went to Yosemite when I was a child, around 1967. It fell in a storm in 1969. There are several coast redwoods between Legget and Eureka, on Hwy. 101, that you can still drive through.

Here's another Rob fixed for me...500px-52_Photos_Week_35_Vacation-10.jpg

There are (or were) at least one above Eureka as well. My mom's Expedition fit through it a few years ago.
I could darken/sharpen those pictures a bit for you.  Not sure if it would help identify people, but it would look better.
Could you? That would be wonderful. My cousin has been scanning them and distributing them to family members, but I don't know anything about making them look better. I will send you my e-mail on a private message. Do you want me to e-mail them to you, or would you rather just copy them from here? I have one or two others in similar condition.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

In 2010 my husband and I went to Tasmania, Australia to visit his son, Richard.  It was the vacation of a lifetime for me -- I fell in love with Tasmania.  The photos below show my favorite place.

In the 1940s, my great-grandparents took a very much delayed "honeymoon," a road trip starting in central Missouri and traveling through southern United States.

My great-grandmother, Mabel (Bennett) Mounts, kept a travel journal. It's the writing I have in her own words, and I wish I had more. It's vivid and witty and just a bit snarky.

She wrote about their car, "Little Ponty," which was a "he":

"We almost 'dunked' Little Ponty, for the water came up over the run boards, but he waded bravely through."

And she wrote about their travels. Some highlights:

Along the trail are many beautiful and peculiar rock formations. One called the 'Old Man of the Mountain' is a very close likeness to a human face. Our guide insisted that it resembles 'Pop-eye,' but I think its resemblance to a human being is better than that.

Mountain Grove - where we found the grove, but looked in vain for the mountain. Willow Springs - with the springs very much in evidence.

We went all through the fort, and investigated it as well as we could, but our attention was considerably diverted by the mosquitoes, which were the most numerous, bloodthirsty and vicious of any I ever saw. They lit all over us and even dug in through our clothes. They seemed to be the sole defenders of the fort, but it would take a very brave army to raid it while they were there.

From the attitude of our fat and genial host in regard to [the mosquitoes], one gets the impression that they are but an added charm of this charming country, and we accept them as such, and only swat them when he isn't looking, for fear of offending him.

Here's Mabel with her husband and son, on family travels twenty years before. I'm guessing this photo was taken on a road trip too, but this one was probably just across Missouri, from Kansas City to the place where she grew up in northeast Missouri.

And here's her husband Ben with "Ponty II," Little Ponty's predecessor.

by Jessica Hammond G2G6 Mach 3 (34.5k points)
I remember that last photo. And I’m still in love with that car.
I love these photos they evoke the time so well, and what wonderful expressions on their faces, so natural which makes them special because most photos of that era were very 'posed'.

Pip, Ben would have been happy to hear you love the car. He really, really cared about his cars. smiley

Wow!  Great story and great photos!

This is my grandfather Ralph Stewart Shane on vacation at Crater Lake, Oregon sometime in the 1950s.  This photo was taken in June and there were still 16 foot snowdrifts in places at that time!

by Susan Yarbrough G2G6 Mach 3 (30.1k points)
Wow!  that "pole" seems natural. Surely it's not man-made.
I agree!  I thought it looked like a part of a tree, too!

We can't see the photo.  Just a question mark in a little blue box.
Thanks. I'll see if I can fix it.
It's fixed!
It has water in it, definitely not the Grand Canyon. Maybe Lake Powell? If not for the Glenn Canyon Dam, Lake Powell would be the upper Grand Canyon, about a third the size of it's big brother. Boating on Powell looks like you're in a lake inside the Grand Canyon.
That is a very plausible suggestion. There were a few pictures of a dam with this one so I'll have to go back and look at them again.
There aren't so many dams in the world. If you know the area you just go to Google Maps or Google Earth, search for dams in the area, zoom in and compare each to the photo. You should be able to find it in a half hour.
Well, I believe the dam in the other photographs is the Grand Coulee Dam, so this picture must have been taken somewhere along the Columbia gorge.

Space: 52 Photos week 35 Vacation

image

I am using Vacation a little different than most. This is a picture of all of the children and teenagers with their teachers that attended Vacation Bible School at the First Baptist Church in Momence, Kankakee County, Illinois, USA in 1958.

I know that everybody looks like tiny ants in this picture, but I am on the left side, 3rd row from the back, 4th girl from the left side.

My sister and several of my cousins are also in this picture.  I just thought it would be a different play on the word "Vacation".

by Cheryl Hess G2G Astronaut (1.8m points)
Cheryl what a fantastic photo so clear and so many people on one photo

It is amazing thank You for sharing this wonderful photo
Thank you, my dear friend. You are always so sweet to me.
Love this photo, and it brings back so many memories. The fans on the walls are wonderful and a reminder that there was no such thing as central air conditioning. Thank you Cheryl for sharing this great photo.
You are welcome Alexis. We sure have a lot of things in common growing up.
Wonderful photo, Cheryl! Thank you for sharing it.

So how did we all survive to adulthood without air-conditioning?

Robin, I guess we played kickball and baseball outside all of the time, so the heat didn't bother us. Something the kids today need to due instead of being on their phones or games all of the time. Thank you Robin. heart

I remember -- being outside playing day or night in the summer was the best!

Here's my great uncle Victor Johnson dipping salmon in Chitina, Alaska. This was the front of a postcard sent to my grandfather, who was named after him. I never met Victor, but I've learned from family albums that he loved fishing and the outdoors.

Cross Country Vacations: trips by car in 1962 and 1964 starting from Kansas and 1) touring the US East-of-Kansas and 2) going to New York to see the 1964 World's Fair.

My parents sent out Christmas Cards every year to friends and family - usually about some event that was note worthy. In the summer of 1962 we packed up the car and took an extended trip with lots of stops. In 1964 we went to see the World's Fair. The one stop I remember best was going inside Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. For the 1962 trip Dad ensured we went through as many states as possible across the northern part of the US - from Kansas to Maine and back (we only took a few miles inside Maine - just enough to say we had been there). Camping in our big family tent, cooking on the portable gas grill, getting eaten alive by bugs, and just having a great time.  Then for Christmas Mom and Dad made posters, for 1964 they made a make-shift "car", and made the photos into Christmas Cards (see the Space:Sloat_Christmas_Cards for more details about the cards).

When I was growing up, my very favorite place to go for vacation was to see my grandparents in Florida.  I'd always opt to go there even when the rest of the family was going somewhere else.
