Transcriber's Challenge (Sept. 2019)

Starting September 1st, the first Transcriber's Challenge will kick off! The Transcriber's Challenge is a month long challenge where members are encouraged to transcribe gravestone photographs in order to create new profiles on WikiTree.

Anytime you want to compete for the Winners badge, click answer at the bottom of this post. We will use the Challenge Tracker to record the profiles we create.

  • All profiles must be new to WikiTree and the photographs must be original – either taken by you personally, or photos that you have permission to use!
    • Do not use photos from FindAGrave without permission
    • Make sure to check for existing profiles before creating a new one!
  • Every new profile created from a gravestone transcription must contain the image, as well as a source citation for the transcription.
  • If an image contains multiple people, each new profile created will count!
    • As an example, a gravestone that contains both a husband and wife, which ends up being 2 new profiles to WikiTree, counts as 2 points!
    • Make sure to link the image to both profiles and provide the source citation.

When you save the profile, a green bar for the Challenge Tracker will appear at the top of the page. Simply click on the  CHALLENGE TRACKER  button and check the box for "Cemetery Transcribers Challenge"! Verify your Wiki-ID, add a comment, and then click "Add Action".

For those who do not have their own photos, and would like to participate, the Global Cemeteries Project has you covered! Head over to the Transcriber's Challenge Resources page for a listing of donated photos you can work from!

Will you join us in this challenge?

To check the current stats and your contributions to the challenge, view the Transcriber's Challenge Tracker.

I've been using the cemetery one also
Hi Everyone, I am aware of the duplicate tracker and I am working with Aleš to correct this.

I will be monitoring both trackers, but would prefer for you to use the CemeteryTranscribersChallenge tracker option.
I also posted a message in discord, didn't get an answer so checked both of them to be on the safe side.
Thanks, Steven! Will do.
Steven, maybe you could go to the original posting above and add the "Cemetery" to the "Transcriber's Challenge" box it says to click on.  That may help others that come along.  I will start using the one that says Cemetery also. Not meaning the real box but the information in the posting telling us where to click.
Thanks!

Karen
Hi Steve,

Oops, I used the wrong tracker button but changed it.
Thank you for leading this new challenge, Steven! This is great. And thank you for donating and uploading all those photos, Paula. Awesome.
I've been using the Transcriber's button as well to monitor my changes and I now see my results are gone from the tracker. I'll use the Cemeterist's button from now on.
Hi Debi, both trackers are being monitored. I posted a recent update here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/901203/transcribers-challenge-sept-2019-day-3-update

Wow, I had just decided yesterday to add profiles for a new cemetery and put the first one up with a photo, I should have waited a couple more days,.  Only have 10 profiles that have photos in this cemetery so will have to change cemeteries for others but will be happy to participate.

I'd be interested. There is a cemetery nearby that I could visit and take photos of. Is there a way to find out which cemeteries have already had the tombstones photographed?
by Alex Stronach G2G6 Pilot (365k points)

Alex, you can try working down the Cemetery Team structure until you find the locality that you would be working in. As an example, you may be interested in Manitoba, Canada. Once you land on a Team page, check towards the bottom for a link to a "Progress page". There you will find a table of what Cemetery members are working on in that area.

If you have any questions, or want me to look at a specific area to see what I can find, just let me know!

Nevada has lots of lost and lonely graves.  I've photographed many of them and will be adding them to WikiTree.

We just need to create profiles. More detailed bios come later. Am I correct.

Not very good with bios.
by Chris McCombs G2G6 Mach 6 (60.1k points)

Hi Chris! Yes, the main goal is to create the profile (adding the image and source citation).

In regards to a Bio, you could add in a simple statement using the source citations, such as:

Joe Schmoe was born in 1884 and passed away in 1907. He is interred at the Whatchamacallit Cemetery in Anyplace, State.<ref>Monumental inscription. Country. Cemetery name, place name. Monument death date as inscribed. (b. date as inscribed) LAST NAME inscribed, given name. GPS: DATA HERE. Photographed by: [[Wiki-ID|Name]]: date photo taken.</ref>

I'm already part of the Cemetery Project.

So count me in.

I am so in.  I can also upload some images to the Transcriber’s Challenge Resource, which I didn’t know existed until your original post about this event. I have been trying to get assistance with creating profiles for the cemetery that I have been working on with no dice. So this challenge will, hopefully, aide with that endeavor.
by Kristin Anderson G2G6 Mach 4 (48.9k points)
Hi Kristin! The Global Cemeteries Project uses another page specifically for transcriptions, and this page was created just to support this challenge and will be updated as the photos are cleared out. If you have some images you would like to put up for transcription when a challenge is not running, just let me know and I can guide you to that area.
I would love that!

Count me in, too.  I've been very slow to record burials and cemeteries lately.  This is just the kick in the pants I needed.
