Thank you, Cap'n Steve! I am very sorry to say that this will be the first marathon event that I have to miss. (Family wedding that weekend.)
You could still join and hop on early in the morning or at night there boss. Or even just join as cheerleader. Looks odd with your name missing.
Not sure I contributed anything - got lost in the William Day Stetson Tree, and filled in new people, and added sources to existing profiles, Maybe next time?
I found that so frustrating.  I kept wandering away from the given task to add spouses and children, but I knew if I left the profile I'd never get back to it.

It happens. But for those you added sources to that would make new profiles, we have a category for.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Needs_Profiles_Created such as [[Category:Maine, Needs Profiles Created]]

We use those for the Connect-a-thon.

Oh thanks! I’ll put that tag on my cheat sheet.

Just to let everyone know, in our area there are currently 49,185 qualifying profiles. I think we have plenty as long as we track where we are working so we don't keep duplicating what we are doing.

Are we supposed to declare a preferred area, or just do our own thing, or will we be assigned?.  If the latter, please keep me in New England.  If I'm on my own, I'll be working in Massachusetts and Maine.  How do we avoid duplicating efforts and working on top of each other?  Hard work gets lost when the timing of two entries overlap.  Or do we just take our chances?  Over 49,000 playgrounds should make overlaps very random, I would think.  Thanks.

That is why we have the SPREADSHEET where you can click the link at the left to open qualifying unsourced profiles by state or province. And then if you scroll down to where your name is, let us know where you are working so we don't do all the same ones.

You can do for example VT 2nd, 1800, beg to let us know you are doing Vermont "Location: Vermont, Category:Unsourced Profiles" in the 1800-1899 years and since it is large, from the beginning.  This way someone can chose end and work toward each other.

Clicking the link for the state or province opens the same listing you will find on our team space page for each place.

I can't figure out where to put what I'm working on, but I'm working on Maine 1700-1799 starting at the end,

In preparation for the latest Source-A-Thon, I would like to share some of my favorite places to find source records:

  1. FamilySearch.Org - this is the group that originally indexed the US Census records, for starters.
  2. Newspapers.com - Yes, its a paid site, but when records become murky as they get too close to the present, that's where you'll find marriage announcements, obituaries and everything in between. Clips are free to view.
  3. FindAGrave.com - So popular, wikitree created a template for it.
  4. Archive.org - Have you ever wanted to read a genealogy book only to find it's in the Reference section and you can't check it out? Archive.org has thousands of scanned books online so it's like your own personal reference library on your computer.
  5. Library and Archives of Canada - This is where the Censuses of Canada are found online.
  6. National Cemetery Administration grave locator - https://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/

Just so you know, if you click where it says "research" under "XXXXXXX-#### in the upper right corner (mine is Tibbetts-150) you get Rootssearch which uses your WikiTree password and integrates the info from THAT profile to Familysearch.org, Find-a-grave, Google, Ancestry, and many other places with a couple clicks.

LINK to an excellent sourcing tutorial. I know the guy who made it. wink

That's pretty sweet. And if you click onto "More Sites" at the bottom of that page it allows for additional targeted site searches (some with your paid membership).
Yep. Noted that in the tutorial.

I would highly recommend people read the Important Notes on the SPREADSHEET and watch the Participation how-to video.

And remember to remove the unsourced template or category when adding a source. If you add a source which can be used to make parents/ siblings/ children that don't currently exist, add the category [[Category:Maine, Needs Profiles Created]] (or the relevant state) in place of the unsourced category or sticker.

The Virginia Sourcers thank you for the 1,518 sources you added to WikiTree during the Source-a-Thon. It was another great showing of community collaboration and we appreciate all that you did!

So sorry team - once again signed up and was unable to participate. What was supposed to be a weekend off wound up to be a working weekend. Which is actually a good thing. But it meant I missed the fun . . . not good! I'll keep trying!
