Place of birth and parents names of KNOP Adelbert

My great-grandfather Adelbert Knop (Knop-31) migrated to the US from Germany in the 1870s or 80s.  The family history says that he attended the Gymnasium and was a young officer in the German army when he became and enraged and struck his superior officer.  Not knowing whether he had killed him or not he fled Germany for the US and never returned.  He ended up in Chicago where he opened a brewery at one point.  His birthplace has been referred to as Küln which is Cologne. The family also says that his parents owned an inn.  This is where I'm stuck.  Unfortunately I don't speak German and have no other leads.  Can anyone guide me?

This is Anna's death certificate listing her birth and parents names, will add it to her profile.

This seems to be Anna's brother August Hueber born Germany 30 Jan 1861  died Chicago 26 Jun 1918.

I think this is Albert/Adelbert.  You might want to check with the Memorial Cemetery in Skokie, IL (or th funeral home on Anna's record), to see if they are buried together and this is correct.

In the  1920 census Albert (address Lincoln Avenue) is listed as owner of a delicatessan (as on death record), so likely the correct man?

Naturalization on census data is  about 1886, if you could find that record it might provide more about his origins.

Thank you, Chris, for all of this information.  I remember  visiting the grave in Memorial Park when I was young.  There are my grandmother and grandfather, my grandfather's parents, and I never quite understood who August Hübner was.  Evidently my grandfather was named after his uncle.  This gives me some more material to follow up.
On Anna's death certificate, her father is August Hueber  as well, so I guess her brother August, and your grandfather  were named after him.

To find out if Köln is right and where records may be found perhaps this might help:

Thank you, Helmut, for the tip.  It doesn't look like there are any searchable archives on line.  I live in the Dordogne in SW France so I probably should try to take another trip to Germany, but I'm seriously hindered by not speaking German.
