I have been hitting my head for years on a brick wall for my wife's grandfather, Robert McKee. His son Victor (Her Dad) was born in 1938, and Robert died in 1942. My wife distinctly remembers seeing pictures of him in a World War II Army uniform, so I suspect he was Killed in Action during the war, but that's not the brick wall. Unfortunately, all of that is based on Family Recollections and could be faulty
I can find nothing to verify Roberts birth, parents, or anything. Robert and Victor's mother Marjorie were not married when Victor was born. Marjorie has marriage certificates on her other husbands, but none for McKee. I am 97% sure Victor was born out of wedlock to a 20/22 year old Robert and a 17 year old Marjorie.
So Robert: My wife's mother (Who has now passed) has said Robert was born in Mattoon, Illinois. Marjorie was born (and died) in Decatur, IL, only about 45 miles away from each other.
I have found a Robert R. McKee on the 1920 and 1930 Census as the son of a Gardner McKee in Charleston, IL, only 11 miles from Mattoon, Roberts alleged birthplace. He is the right age, born in 1916 instead of 1918.
I want so badly for this to be the same Robert McKee, but I am just not 100% certain and I don't want to add him as THE Robert McKee without being sure. A birth certificate for Victor would help a bit, but I can't find that either.
Can someone with a fresh set of eyes look at Robert McKee-4051 and let me know if I am on the right track or totally derailing? I have added the 1920 and 1930 source info in the Bio so that they are easy to find.
Thank you to any and all who attempt this for me.
