This is a picture of my Great (x4) Grandparents, Larkin and Saphronia Humble. I chose this one because it is the oldest picture of a grave that I have.

52 Photos Week 37: Grave

One of the reasons I got started in genealogy was this stone. I have talked about it before. It is the headstone of my 2nd great-grandparents, Herman and Sophie Ohlenkamp Junker.

When my grandmother took me out to St. Paul's Cemetery and showed me all of the headstones of her family. I was fascinated. But when she showed me this one, I was hooked. I couldn't read what it said then, and I still don't know what it says now, but I know their blood runs through me, and that excited me - I had to know more.

I am going to have to get creative on this one because the only photos that I have of any ancestors' graves were sent to me digitally and I don't have permission to post them, so here goes:

This is my great grandmother Alice Melissa Elliott Shane.  Her expression is so GRAVE and sad in this photo.  I know that they had to be quite still for photos back then, but other photos of her look happier.  At least it provided me a photo to use for the category Grave!  :)

This is one of the monuments to Ohio soldiers that fought at Vicksburg during the Civil War.  I visited the battlefield with my mom and brother a few years ago to honor the memory of several Ohio ancestors who were veterans.

This is the gravestone of my great-grandfather Warren Brown Rowley in Graceland Cemetery, Mitchell, South Dakota.

In June 2010, I visited the church of St. Thomas à Becket in Hampthswaite, North Yorkshire, and photographed some of the Hardesty / Hardisty gravestones there. Some of the Hardistys emigrated to Anne Arundel, Maryland, in the 1600s.

A church existed on this site since Celtic times. In the 1100s, the church was said to be constructed by one of the knights who murdered St. Thomas, in atonement. Vestiges of earlier churches are incorporated into the modern church. The churchyard is also famous for its galanthus (snowdrops), that bloom in early spring.

Master Corporal Byron Greff was the last Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan. He was my father's cousin's grandson. His mother is in the picture.
