I wonder who named The Toronto Maple "Leafs".

From Washington Post article:

History has it that Conn Smythe named the team after the Maple Leaf badge worn by soldiers in the Canadian Army during World War I.

So, to follow Chambers’s lesson that proper nouns take regular plurals, more than one Maple Leaf badge would be referred to as Maple Leafs. By that same token, two Maple Leaf players are referred to as Maple Leafs, not Maple Leaves.

Hope you'll sign up with us, George.
I shall do my best but I think I will be away at that time. It is nice to hear that my favourite blue and white hat and travel bag do not have a spelling error on them.
Hello! Newbie here checking in. As I heard on the Youtube chat box, I just choose an unsourced Canadian profile and look for sources? What do I do with my Bib Number?
Good morning, Karen! Yes, choose a province if you like. I'm working on the "P" list in Ontario at the moment. The Bib Number is for claiming prizes. Once you click the Save button, then the Challenge Tracker button and the little 2019 Source-A-Thon button, the system will automatically log you in with your WikiTree ID number and enter you on our team log. In other words, you don't have to do anything with your Bib #!
I'm out this morning but will check back this afternoon. Good luck!
Hi Karen, I'm around today if you have any questions.
What you can learn on wiki tree?  Remember reading a book about the hockey players of the Great War!.  Veteran Affairs has a web page tiled "Fallen Canadians with Ties to Hockey."

Check another web page that highlights the Memorial Cup of Junior Hockey was instituted as a memorial to fallen hockey players.

Thanks for the source, Peggy.

I've signed up as well. Bring on the pumpkin pie or pumpkin lattes to sustain us while sourcing!
by Laurie Cruthers G2G6 Pilot (166k points)
I was not going to sign up, but now that I know pumpkin pie might be involved, I will have to reconsider.
Please do!
Mmmm, pumpkin pie!  I can’t remember when I last had a piece xo

I've signed up as well stating I was canadian with a specialisation in Québec research (as my ENTIRE tree is in Québec) and to put me where I can be useful and needed. LOL .. so they'll probably tac me to this team cheekysmiley

by Andréa Boudreau G2G6 Mach 6 (64.5k points)
Bienvenue! And, alas, as Danielle knows that's about all the French I can remember. It will be great having someone familiar with Québec research on the team because we have a few new WikiTreers aboard who may need some help with Drouin and the like. And, yes, the name is a bit over the top!
Thank you, Laurie. Yep, it's all about the French. LOL The name is fine.. easy to find Canucks with it. It's properly Canadian, if you ask me! And if anyone needs a hand with the French stuff, just hit me up, I'll be glad to do my best.

I’m excited to join the team again this year!! Please let me know if any areas could use some extra help, otherwise I’ll just fill in wherever I can! (I also have quite a few unused PRDH credits, if that might be helpful to anyone on the team.) Thanks!
by Megan Castle G2G2 (2.7k points)
Megan, welcome back! I'm filling in for Christine this morning and have added your name to the team list. And just to display my genealogical ignorance, what are PRDH credits?
Thanks for adding me to the list! The PRDH website (prdh-igd.com) contains a searchable database of all Québec’s Catholic baptisms, burials, and marriages between 1621-1849. They also have other resources such as family reconstructions, info on pioneer immigrants, etc. Searching is free, but each record costs 1 credit to view. I probably won’t work on Québec profiles during the Source-a-Thon (unless help is needed there!), but wanted to offer just in case the credits can help anyone else on the team!
Oh one day I hope to be able to subscribe to that website. Much faster to look up stuff than my currently "manual" searches on BAnQ and FamilySearch LOL
I love the family reconstructions on PRDH, but you should definitely check out genealogiequebec.com for easy searching! It’s run by the Drouin Institute and has every record you could probably ever want. They also have a searchable index of marriages and deaths from 1926-1997. Those more recent records can be hard to find! It requires a subscription, but the price is really not that bad.

Very exciting to be joining my compatriots, the Mighty Maple Leaves for the Scan-a-Thon!

(And thanks to Laurie Cauthers for pointing me to the team chat.)

Friday

Started off by digging into the Alberta Unsourced Profiles subcategory, within the broader Canada U.P.s category. Now moving on to the British Columbia U.P.s set.

So far, I'm at 30 profiles. Team total is 235. Nice work my fellow Canucks!

Saturday

Only managed another 5 today. Less low hanging fruit in BC and Alberta U.P. categories at this point... and less time on my hands.

Amazing to see the team at 568. Excellent work, friends!

Sunday

I am in transit today, but I was able to get through a few more Canadian profiles (up to 45 now).

And the Mighty Maple Leaves are at 806!

Once I arrive, I'll try to add a few more. Very glad to participate with the rest of you great folks.

It is my first Source-a-thon.  I am excited and anxious in equal parts. I took part in the Data Doctors Naming challenge last week to get some practice in.  I don’t expect it will be much different.

Will we orchestrate who is working on what, or just free style?

My daughters are coming home this weekend, so I won’t be searching and adding 24/7, but I will do my best.

As I am in the UK, I think it starts about 1 pm in my time zone.

Great questions, Wendy. You're right, it's not much different from working on one of the weekly challenges.

It's pretty casual. Some people pick a province and a letter in that province and let the team know on this page. If you can't find a source, it's a good idea to leave a research note on the profile saying where you looked. Numbers aren't as important in my view as finding good sources and improving profiles, although I do admit to getting a bit rah-rah when I see our team neck and neck with Australia or New Zealand.

Christine and I will be in and out over the weekend, too, so no worries there. No one expects 24/7.

I'll save you some piesmiley

Good morning, Wendy. I see you're on our team board. Well done!

Since Armand Le Forte ended up on your team and he wanted to do Acadian profiles, you may want this link for him.

Acadian Unsourced

Also, don't forget your team spreadsheet located HERE. If you need those converted from suggestions to unsourced, hit me up for help if you need it.

Thanks, Steve! Just getting the coffee on here.

Good morning everyone!!

The Google sheet that Steve linked to has been set up with everyone's names. Please feel free to indicate beside your name what you are working on or have completed!

Let me know if there are any issues or if you have any questions and I or Laurie will try to get back to you as soon as possible!

Thanks and have fun!

Sorry I haven't been able to help so far. As luck would have it, family obligations are interfering this weekend.

But I should be able to jump in later tonight. I'll have a look at Unsourced Ontario & I'll start at the back end of the alphabet - WXYZ

Just want to say that if any of you come across sourcing done by me for the last Source-a-Thon (or any from me, really) that look like they could be improved, go ahead!

I was still learning the best way to do citing and think I've finally got a system.  Found one recently from last year and I was yikes, what was I thinking!!
by Peggy Watkins G2G6 Pilot (838k points)
We've all been there, Peggy!

Good morning everyone! As of now, we're at 315. Great work everyone, particularly those of you who are participating in your first "thon."

I'm currently tied with Dave! Here's to the middle of the pack!!

We are the middle! We are the middle!

by Peggy Watkins G2G6 Pilot (838k points)
Yay middle! And yay Ralph and Wendy who keep trading places waaaaaay up there leading the pack!
I'll never catch Ralph & Wendy, but I'm the Leader of the (middle of the) Pack!!

Yay middle!

The rest of you are gonna have to catch me. I'll be back tonight!
Rabbit holes. I'm getting lots of sourcing done, but haven't made the Tracker yet! Oh well.
Me too. Cleaning up profiles, sorting out families; tedious work but needs to be done. Not adding to my points though.
The race is pretty tight for the leader of the (middle) of the pack! Go team!

Meanwhile, here's a bonus. A few days ago I searched for Unsourced BC profiles (without the banner) and added the banner. I checked some of them today and they had sources. So, I guess that motivated the PMs to go and get sources. Yeah for that!
So much to do, so little time.  Still I am enjoying it.

Off to bed now though, as I have to be up early.  Will try to get a few done in the a.m.

Wendy xo
I'm so pleased you had fun, Wendy. Thanks for all your hard work.

And Peggy and Christine, those rabbit holes are hard to ignore, aren't they? I've just spent the last little while trying to find an admiral, only to finally discover that Admiral was his first name! Poor guy, no wonder he went by Milton.

Source on! Go MMLs!

I cleaned up the profiles of a family who hadn't been touched since their upload in 2011. Sad.sad

I'm trying to get in the habit of adding a category like "British Columbia needs profiles created" when I add sources that give names of other family members (spouses, parents).

I'm hoping this will help anyone trying to do connecting or just building out the family tree.

This just occurred to me this week so I wanted to share the idea.
Good job Peggy!! I've been doing this too (for the next Connect-A-Thon).
Thanks, Peggy. I'll have to remember to do this.

Yeah, great effort, everyone! We made our branches of the tree that much better and honored some of folks who treaded this beautiful land before us!

Thank you.
