Looking for Smith Barlow Borden (1852 [TN]-1941 [KY]) ancestors

+4 votes
Does anyone have any information on who his parents were or why he shoes with other families before he marries in censuses? Orphan? Native American?

Have hit a brick wall on the ancestors of Smith Barlow (S.B.) Borden. Born in Tennessee(?)on October 8, 1852 and died in Hardin County, Kentucky on April 10, 1941. Was married to Lillie Martin. Both are buried in Little Hope Cemetery in Edmonson County, Kentucky. It appears he resided around the Barren County, Kentucky--Cave City area in the community of Jennie near or in what is now Mammoth Cave National Park. He is the father of Elijah Garnet Borden (my g-gf) who is also listed as E.G. and at times as Garnett Elijah. Elijah is a recurring given name, but I am uncertain if this was from ancestry from the Martin or Borden line. The only story that I heard about him and have never been able to verify was that he was some kind of civil engineer or bridge builder that may have worked in Missouri at some point. The direct line is pretty well documented from Smith Barlow Borden down, but no one has anything on his ancestry. I have been told my father had Cherokee ancestry but there is no documentation anywhere. However, with the exception of ME, my brother and other ancestors have been very swarthy and have been asked if they are Native American. This lore appears to have been generated with his paternal heritage, so a possible thought is this is where there was a documentation loss. Would love to know! Thanks!

Hi Lisa, I found several records for your Smith Barlow Borden, but couldn't find him in the 1860 census or his parents.  I have added what I found to his profile:  http://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Borden-655&public=1  Good luck on your search!
