Do you use space pages?

I am increasingly finding the value in space pages.  Categories don't do everything and sometimes grouping profiles is easier with a space page.  Might be a bit more work than just clicking a Category, but (I think) very well worth the effort.  I have some for interests, some for projects and some for family.

I have a bunch...did you know that free-space pages are actually profiles?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Profiles

I just made a SPACE PAGE INDEX so people can possibly find all these great space pages. I bet people would love to check them out and may find they have duplicate pages with complimentary info.

I so far have made one sub-category ==Training== and put my sourcing primer in. It was left open so anyone can add to it. Maybe some of the HUGE categories of space pages should get their own space page. Like possibly One Name Studies? or Cemeteries?

Another possible thought, would this work out better if Space Pages were CATEGORIZED instead of Indexed?
Quite probably, Steven.  The index will become verrry looong.
Steven,

How do we find this index to check it out?
check the answer down at the bottom.
Found it! Thank you.

I currently have 159.  The one I am currently working on is about all the John Haywoods on WikiTree, which will be attached to my Haywood Name Study.

The others cover topics like transcriptions of Wills I have done (attached to profiles), bibliographies of authors in the English Authors subproject, a place to keep my images, to-do lists, pages I created for the King Arthur mini-project, and the inevitable Sandbox.

I love freespace pages! (Can you tell? ha ha)

"I currently have 159."  surprise

Oh Good. I am not alone!!!!

I have 25 space pages and I thought that was excessive!!

I can relax now!! LOL
You have more than me

I thought at 100, I had a lot! Mostly wills , but also pages on 17th C Dorchester and   attempts to sort out confused pedigrees.
Now that raises an interesting point: do space pages / profiles count with person profiles towards the 5,000 mark, or are they separate?
And here I was, ... worried about having 20 Space pages, 5 Name studies and 1 Place study...

Thanks Ros. :)
Kenneth, I don't know if Space Pages count into the 5k limit. The profiles I have created for my Space Page are on my watchlist until I orphan them, but I still have (easy) access to them via the Space Page when I orphaned them.

Yes! I have created 5 so far. They're great. This is one I enjoyed creating.

by Chris Orme G2G6 Mach 2 (27.6k points)
I like that, Chris.  You've given me another idea.
Chris, this is a wonderful page!  I had an older friend who had one of these books.  Whenever someone new came to visit her she would have them write their name on their birthday.  You could see how much she treasured the book.
Your friend's visitor book is a lovely idea, Michelle.
Elizabeth's father and husband were both Missouri politicians.  She was very active in the historic preservation movement and was able to save many historic buildings such as Jefferson Landing.  I am sure that she was able to meet quite a few interesting people in her 103 years!

I see that she does not have a wiki entry.  I need to fix that.  -- edited -- I have started her profile McReynolds-726.

I created a Space Page for the Vital Records of the British Churches on Madeira. Those are the persons I found in these records. As you can see I, by far, haven't yet created profiles for all of the people, but it is actually my goal. One of the growing number of goals I have here. Many of the people with created profiles aren't yet connected to the Big Tree. If you want to create profiles for those who still don't have profiles or connect people, go ahead.

There's certainly plenty of work there to keep you out of trouble, Jelena.  I'll see what I can do to help.

I use them for a number of different purposes but one that I need to get back to is my personal project to document those from New Brunswick, Canada who fought in the Great War (WWI) at New Brunswick WWI Soldiers.

For those who forget where their Space pages are, you can find them on your Watchlist.

That's given me a few ideas to work on.  Thanks, Doug.

I do.  I have two for images and stuff .. one for a specific profile .. and one just created a few days ago to use as a test profile while I work things through before creating an actual people profile.  (A "sandbox" pretty much.)
by Melanie Paul G2G6 Pilot (422k points)
I hadn't thought of images. Would certainly save storing them on my own profile.

I started out with single space page which I recently had Mary Richardson assist me with redesigning and reorganizing:

Vinh Long Army Airfield

Soc Trang Army Airfield

The Helicopter War in Vietnam

It all started out as a convient place to store some of my Dad's photos etc after he died...the research into the location where he served got addictive and unintentionally turned into a giant project. I'm still working on all three pages.

I have a few ones for personal use too. I store links to my favorite online sources/resources and as well as to keep track of my private library and another one to store old family photos I'm still trying to identify.

They're very well done, Sondra. And a great way to honour your Dad.

The Ontario Team of the Canada Project have eleven listed on our page, everything from settlers groups to Toronto street namesakes, plus we use one to keep track of our work on notables from the province. My own first attempt was one about my great-grandfather's orchard.

Just had a look at the Governors of Queensland. Very impressive!

Thanks, Laurie.  I'm going to pinch the Ontario team's idea for a couple of Aussie projects I'm involved with.

I created my first one yesterday for the Lindenmuth List of early German Immigrants in the Tulpehocken Valley of Pennsylvania (arriving ~1723-1735).  Yes, free space pages are great.  I need to improve my skills at finding them, however, because sometimes I encounter a useful free space page only after I need it.

Yes I use space pages mostly for projects I belong to.

* I have one for Flooding Disasters, concerning 2010 Floods in Nashville, Tn;

*Some pages for Name Studies like Barry Name Study, Fleming Name Study, and other surnames in my family tree;

* Space pages I did for the Integrators project and also moderators;

* Space page for the Southern Super Sweepers, URL: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Southern_Super_Sweepers

* My own space page for bookmarked WikiTree pages;

* A space page for the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps which became the Women's Army Corps during World War II  that I am most proud of. See URL:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Women%27s_Army_Auxiliary_Corps

*And a few others assigned to my account for projects I belong to.

Love the WAAC page, Dorothy.  My mother was in the Women's Royal Australian Navy Service (WRANS) in the Second World War.  The various women's services are very underrated as they served such important roles.
My mum was WAAAF (later it became WRAAF, then simply RAAF) during the Second World War .. and my Grandma was a WAAC (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, later called Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps (QMAAC)) during the Great War.

EDIT: Grandma's WAAC was ENGLAND, just to be clear.

hmm. Sci-fi, Star Trek, and Superheros. I might have to bookmark those. Of course you do realize you are now obligated to make a "Star Wars" one as well?
We really need a good space page index.
Agree wholeheartedly, Steven.  There must be thousands of great space pages.
This may be a way to get one of my daughters into WikiTree, Scott.

I discovered that my Ancestors family was buried in an old Cemetery at the Aulds Family Church, built by my Aulds relatives.

Aulds Family Church

I have started including the category for the cemetery on profiles that I find are buried there.

I also created an Auld Name Study Page and a To-Do List page.

I just started working in the space pages.  So I am really new at it and right now they are private.  I did a short story on my mom but need living sisters to permit to publish.  I really wasn't sure if they could be used that way but I see that I am on the right track.  Thanks Kenneth for asking the question.

They are a valuable tool on WikiTree.

indeed, they are quite useful.  I have about  15, mostly project related, the others are for those tangled questions of who arrived when with whom and who are they related to....  Great place to incorporate all my research with the various arguments along the way.

I have just started an index page for SPACE pages. The big question I have is should they be alphabetical or broken into categories? (IE groups or types) Advise please? I will probably dump these into a spreadsheet for sorting to make things easier.

I also left it open so you could add a link followed by a brief description.

Space Page Index

by Steven Tibbetts G2G6 Pilot (410k points)

Also, should some that are going to be really huge like Cemetery and Name Study be on a separate space page that the index will merely have a link to?

 -  hi Steven Tibbetts   -  Cemeteries should have their own - - see this set-up =>

ie: perhaps based on states or countries to narrow them down - ps a number of Aust cems are going 'on line' , which makes life somewhat easier.

An alternate suggestion I made as a reply at the top is if we should just have a Category tree devoted to space pages? I know many show up in the categorization of PROFILES but most people I know of don't look for space pages under profiles.
I added my Space Page to the list. Thanks for setting that up.
Thanks, Steven. I think the index will eventually need categories, but maybe keep it to just a handful; possibly mirror the second level of Categories.
Steven, Organizing by type (Training, BMD, Family Genealogies/Historys, References, Civil War Regiments, -Thon Teams, etc. to name a few) is a good idea. Is it OK to add types and pages to your index? Bob
Thanks for setting that up, Steven. Could you go look what I did for Cemeteries? Is that the kind of order you were looking for? Please edit to fit your vision. Maybe USA should be a top level, instead of under Cemeteries?
When I was suggesting really big groupings like Cemeteries and One Name studies having their own, I meant seperate and distinct space pages just for that and then the index page for all the One Name Study pages being indexed here. That way this index doesn't get overwhelmed with thousands of entries for any one type.

The idea was an entry here for Cemetery Space Pages which linked to a distinct space pages for All Cemetery space pages. That way people could go here, see training, star wars, cemeteries, etc instead of just one huge massive list of cemeteries and not see the rest.
Sounds like a plan. I’ll pull down the the pages I added.
Yep me too.  I will remove mine.

I have just the two, which complement each other. One is a description of a niche occupation in Leicestershire and Derbyshire that has died out:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Spar_Ornament_Manufacture_in_19th_Century_England:_A_Lost_Industry.

The other is to catalogue the people working in that industry and when.

I love this. BTW, your first link doesn't work.
They're great, Gillian.  I've put a couple of ideas into the back of my mind.
I've had problems with this url before and I don't know why it trims off the full stop. It's clearly there when it's on the page here, so I'm not sure why it does this.

By George I've got it!  cheeky
