Copy and paste shortcut keys to make for faster WikiTreeing.

A little over a year ago I wrote the G2G post "Copy and Paste shortcut for G2G questions & answers."  In that post I talked about the use of browser programs, like Clipboard History that remember your cut and paste history.  It remembers everything you copied and lets you paste from any copy in your history.  Favorites can be saved and accessed in a separate pulldown menu.

I use Clipboard History almost daily when I WikiTree and it makes my work so much easier.  It has almost completely eliminated copying from a Word doc or text document.  But, I have so many items in my copy favorites that sometimes I have to search around to find my most used items.

In another thread, WikiTreer David Thomson mentioned that he uses keyboard shortcuts (rather than mouse copy and paste shortcuts).  He shared with me the program that he uses and I appreciated his suggestion and advice.  I investigated a bit further and found that there are also browser plugins that allow me to link any text to a key combination, much like the shortcuts you have on an iPhone.

In my case, I downloaded for Chrome the extension "AutoTextExpander 2."  This program lets me save some shortcuts and now when I type a shortcut the extended text appears.

For your most used shortcuts this program is very convenient and is very fast.  I find that it supplements the other program well and I am probably using it about 80% of the time whereas the cut and paste shortcut probram about 20%.

If you don't have a keyboard shortcut program yet, you might want to check it out!

I am getting a 404 error trying to access that extension unfortunately.  Even incognito mode won't open the url.

Try this link; I've added it to the post:

There also appear to be similar programs as well.

Thanks.  That worked.  I searched for it but it went back to the same one.

SJ, I also use AutoTextExpander on Chrome! I've been using it for months thanks to a suggestion from Wikitreer Katie Goodwin (Collins-17962). Mine are for the Ancestry Records and Trees templates, the find a grave template, a common citation I've been using for the LaSalle Hotel Fire victims, a category for the same, the notables sticker, the unsourced template, and the required fields (bio, sources, reference tag) + the unsourced template (for those pesky empty profiles!). Nice to see that I'm not the only one who uses it. Suggestions welcome for other things I should add to mine! :)

I also have one that inserts [[Collins-17962|Katie Goodwin]] since I can never remember my number! Anything I find myself typing over and over becomes a shortcut, I have about 25 currently.

This is all very interesting. I will have to try it. One problem is that I alternate browsers because I get annoyed when they get slow. Anyway, I don't use Word but prefer Excel. I have a bunch of frequently used sources already formatted for WikiTree, so I just click - copy - paste. I also like to use the word pad. That is also easy to click - copy - paste without carrying over unwanted formatting. I definitely like the idea of what I call hot keys. That would make my life so much easier.

I use many of the same phrases over and over, so this looks like an awesome time saving tool. Thanks for sharing!
