Hello Thomas.

The parents of your great grandfather Henry R DuBois were Derrill and Isabel Dubois.

According to the 1900 and 1910 US Censuses, your great grandfather Henry was a "Cigar Maker".

He inherited that trade from his step-father Henry Miller.

Your grandfather Henry Francis DuBois (listed Frank in the 1940 US Census) was named after an older brother of your great grandfather Henry. Frank Dubois (Henry's brother) was born ab. 1860-1861 and he was a "Cigar Maker" as well.

1865 NY State Census. Frank is listed 4 y/o.

Thomas, I believe you may find some assistance in this History of Oneida County which is a free e-book at Google Books: https://books.google.com/books/about/History_of_Oneida_County_New_York.html?id=dPYpAQAAMAAJ

I believe there is at least one other similar publication.

Thank you. My great grandfather was a cigar maker. Doubt he was important enough to make the county history but I will get that book for historical interest.
In this era there were a number of publishers who made a handsome profit on county histories and there are often two or three on a county published not too many years apart. I'm often surprised by what little nuggets of information can be found in the articles which are often submitted/written by someone who was local. Sometimes it may be nothing more than Old Joe lived next to Sam the blacksmith that can provide a new lead. Good luck with it.
Tom,

Your great grandfather hinerited that trade (Cigar Maker) from his step-father.

An Isabelle Miller with more than one minor child (Henry and et al) filed for a DeWitt Dubois' Civil War pension in 1890 and 1895:

"United States General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDYF-948 : 13 March 2018), Dewitt C Dubois.

Name: Dewitt C Dubois
Event Type: Pension
Event Place: New York, United States
Service:  G 12, NY Inf
Filed:  1890 July 16; Widow - Miller, Isabella
Filed: 1895 J??[un/an] 10; Minor - Dubois, Henry, et al

Looking at the image of the 1865 census page, it could have been a poorly written Dewitt instead of the indexed Derrill.

And the Soldiers and Sailors Database (US National Parks Service) has a record for Dewitt C Dubois:

National Park Service, "Soldiers and Sailors Database," Dubois, Dewitt C., 12th Regiment, New York Infantry, Union, Company G (https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers-detail.htm?soldierId=AD69DF97-DC7A-DF11-BF36-B8AC6F5D926A : accessed 12 October 2019)

Rank In: Private

Rank Out: Corporal

National Archives Film Number: M551, Roll 39
