Category Placement?

I understand from my reading that you can force the categories to be listed in the biography/text section by putting putting a colon before as well as after the word "category" as in [[:Category:Prussia]].  Neat trick and it does make the categories more visible.

I also read someplace that there is redesign under way and the categories are going to become more visible in that redesign.  If we choose to use the little trick above when the redesign happens will those categories that are in biography section going to get the same upgrade?  Or will they stay put?  In other words are we mucking up this future design change by putting categories in biographies?

Also if we do this on profiles that have privacy controls where the biography section doesn't show we are making the categories invisible where they have always been visible before no matter what the privacy setting was.

So should be we be doing this?

Hi Gail,

This is kind of a misconception about categories. [[:Category:Prussia]] does make the category visible, in the sense that you'll see [[Category:Prussia]] in the text. But it doesn't actually put the profile in the category. It only refers to it. That's why you won't see the categories where they're supposed to be.

So, if things are redesigned so that categories are more visible, it'll have no effect on things like [[:Category:Prussia]], because that's just text.
