Hi! If you see this in red at the bottom of a profile page (with the categories) after you've entered a Civil War Template, you're not done!
Name of unit category to add profile to (", United States Civil War" will be added to the unit by the sticker), United States Civil War
That is not a category and never will be. Look at the unit=parameter. Whatever you put after the = needs to be the name of an existing category, hopefully the one for the soldier/sailor you are presenting in a profile. Say it's the 32nd Ohio Volunteers. Well, our categories use the format [[Category:XXXX Regiment, State Infantry, United States Civil War]] (it can be Cavalry, Artillery, whatever) So, my guy of the 32nd Ohio Vols would be in [[Category:32nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry, United States Civil War]]. Do I know if it is already a category? LIKELY. 98% of the Civil War categories are already there and based on the National Park Service's list of Battle Units. Still not sure? Check the state civil war categories. Start here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:United_States_Civil_War If you scroll to the middle of the page, you can find Union and Confederate branches of service. Open the right one and look for the state link. Here are all of Ohio's Union Army Categories: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Ohio%2C_United_States_Civil_War
NOW, back to the unit=. The template actually adds "United States Civil War" to whatever you put there. So, if my final category is [[Category:32nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry, United States Civil War]], I enter in the template the following:
unit=32nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry
THAT'S IT. No company, no "US Civil War" or anything else.
Does this seem like a lot of work? Perhaps it is. But if you don't do it, I must. It's like asking your mom to clean your room when you're 25 years old. She'll probably do it, but she really does have her own things to do! :-) If you need to create Civil War profiles from time to time, I ask you kindly to bookmark the main Civil War category and look for the proper unit. Pretty please?
Don't make me ground you! ;-)
