You'd think with a first name as distinctive as Artemus that I could find him in the censuses! He was born about 1835 in North Carolina, but seems to have caught the pioneer bug and headed west. He enlisted in the Union Army with the 2nd Colorado Infantry Regiment. He survived the war as his wife Louisa divorced him in 1873 Salt Lake City, UT. I have no census records or marriage records for him and Louisa; all I have found is their divorce record.
In 1875-6 he was resident in Sacramento, California.
I have yet to locate Artemus on any federal census and I do not know how he fits into the larger McPhatter family tree. Any assistance would be appreciated!
