Looking for Canadian records

Hi

Can anyone help me find a good, reliable source of information about Canadian residents?  Does Canada have a Scotlands People style website?

I'm looking for any information about David Nicholson MacKay OR McKay, but specifically his date of death.  I believe he was born  between 1886 and1889 in Scotland and emigrated to Canada around 1912.  He married Helen Lamb in Winchester, Manitoba in 1914.  From there they seem to have had links with Souris and Brandon in Manitoba.  I believe he died between 1924 and 1981.

The searching is clunky and results slim on details but I have used it and found useful info.

Peggy gave the best answer for Manitoba and the general case. Some more specific information:

• Each Province has its own way of doing things and you have to go to the Provincial Archives/Record Office site to find anything.
• Library and Archives Canada (bac-lac.gc.ca) has records for some areas and most of the Canadian Census records.
• FamilySearch has a LOT of Canada but not all has images available without going to a Family History Center
• Ancestry has good records
• FindMyPast sometimes has good records.
