October 2019 BioBuilders - Surnames That Are Colors

+17 votes
1.6k views

This month’s Bio Builders Challenge theme is people whose surname is a color (Brown(e), Gray/Grey, Green(e), White, Gold, Black, etc.). Variant spellings are OK, but must be recognized as such. Everyone have fun.

Thank you for your support.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • names of children, if any
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • Some list siblings. (I think this takes up real estate.)
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

WikiTree profile: Space:Biography_Builders
P.S. Suggestions for future themes are ways welcome, especially if they tie into, or help, a Wikitree Project.

Diane,

I never list living people - and as far as a "list" goes, Wikitree already provides that - so I don't reiterate it in their biography. It just seems redundant. When you enter a living person on Wikitree, it makes their profile unlisted, so I don't see the point of listing living people. No one else can see them anyway.  I usually say something like "The couple had 3 children during their marriage" and leave it at that - and create profiles for the non-living children.
The people I entered are deceased. I'm asking about listing their children who may not be deceased because the guideline specifies "list of children..."
List any living children as “Living” without an ID or link. Don’t even include son or daughter.

Diane, here is an example from my own grandmother's profile:

Ruth Violet Lenore (Herling) Ranck (1919 - 2007)

Children

The couple had 4 children, three who survived to adulthood:

i. Herbert Edward Ranck, b. 20 Jul 1941, Long Beach, California, d. 20 Aug 2007, Huntington, West Virginia.[22]
ii. Samuel Ranck (died in infancy)[17]
iii. Living Ranck[17]
iv. Living Ranck[17]
Are we required to create a profile for the living children? I don't see the point as they are living. No one can see their profile - and it ends up limiting the number of profiles we can manage. We are only allowed 5000, and I don't want to fill them up with living people no one will ever read about.
No Alicia, it is not required and best not to add living people as their will automatically be hidden and if they actually decide to join wikitree and create a profile for themselves, they may not be aware that they already had a profile for them created. The Biography Builder list of things to include is just a quideline anyway.

lol, and don't forget all the Leblanc, Lenoir, Leroux...........  laugh

Bob,

It's been a while since I've participates and I just finished my first new one and plan to do more before the month is out. Do I just add them here as I do them and edit this comment?

Done so far:

1) Nicholas White Sr. - arrived in Massachusetts in 1643

You add them as an answer instead of a comment :) I think you can actually convert your "Comment" to an answer if you click "Edit"
Thanks. I tried to convert but no go unless I did it wrong or missed it. I guess I'll just add it as a answer. Thanks again.

LOL . . . this could be fun!  I wonder whether I can find someone named Magenta!  After working on a Beige family and running into a paucity of sources, I remembered a whole line named Swartz.  Slow going for three days of research on one profile.

1.  Jennettie (Head) White

2.  Martha J. (White) Chase

3.  Minnie Flora (Swartz) Rohrbach

It's the Blacks and Blues you must watch out for.wink

Oh my goodness! My ex-husband's middle name was Blue, and so was his father's. Of course, named after a great-grandmother maiden name Blue! I wonder if there is a relation?
Haha Kathy!  :)

Alicia that is interesting.  I don't think it is a very common surname. Although there are Dutch Blues and Scottish Blues.  Have you checked out the National Blue Family Association?  They have a lot of info on both. http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bluefamily/genealogy/index.html

This guy is my immigrant ancestor and he had a bunch of children.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Frederickse-5  Maybe you connect to him?
He was a Scottish Blue - and very proud of the fact that he was the descendant of Kings. I haven't done a lot of research on John's side, so the connection finder is saying your ancestor and I aren't connected. He's my ex, and we don't have children together, so I haven't done much on him. His last name is Boswell - and I keep finding them in my family tree (which is honestly scaring me a bit!) LOL.
LOL!  I reread that and saw the ex-husband part.  I have one of those too ;)

I am of the Dutch Blues so I am not related to your ex.
It occurred to me... His Boswell dad was Scottish. I'm not sure what lineage his Blue ancestry was.

After a few months of copping out, I'll try this one.  I have some White ancestors, some of whom badly need a proper biography!

3. Elizabeth Bourquin White His wife

4. John White Blake's father - Militia Colonel and early landowner in South Carolina

5. Sarah White John's first wife

6. Mary White John's second wife

7. John White Snr John's father and early immigrant to South Carolina from Bermuda

8. Hannah White His wife

9. Anthony White John's father and early Bermuda resident

10. Elizabeth White Anthony's wife

Great theme for the challenge. I'll be working on my White and Black lines this month.

1. Henry Charles White - my 2x great-grandfather. Alas, this one's still a brick wall w/ regard to his parentage, but I've come a long way from having nothing more than his name at this time last year.

2. Edwin Bienvenu White - Henry's youngest son, born 6 months after Henry's death. This challenge reminded me that I'd wanted to dig around and find out what happened to Edwin after he was orphaned. Found it!

3. Harry Caldwell White - Another from the same White family. Another time I wished the 1890 Census hadn't been destroyed.

4. Lafayette Dancy White - Continuing with the White family. Didn't realize until this week that I had a notorious narcotics cop / CIA guy just hanging out on my Watchlist (not this guy, but his son -- bio to come).

5. Virginia R. White - Still on this California White family. Wish I could find more about Virginia's whereabouts past 1940.

6. Maj. Bernard J. Black - My third great grandfather. Civil War soldier turned architect.

I'm a bit late to this as i was searching and couldn't find it (so I carried on working on last months ones as some still need something extra lol)

I remember doing a colour one before so will try to find a different colour - I think I have plenty to choose from: White, Brown and Green are my obvious ones, but will see if I have anymore unusual ones! I just realised I have Pinks in my tree but they are quite far back in time.

My first one will be

#1 Sarah Owers nee Green I probably did her before as she is quite well sourced, but I now have more DNA info that I can put into a chart and attach.

#2 Maud Lavinia Grey nee Johnson added profiles for husband and children

#3 Alfred Edward Gray

#4 Albert Henry Grey

#5 Gladys Maud Wise nee Grey

#6 Leonard George Grey

#7 Florence Rose Cheeseman nee Grey

#8 William Henry Grey

#9 Dorothy Eileen Grey

#10 William White b. 1831

#11 William White b. 1810

# 12 John White b. 1777

#13 John White b. 1738

#14 John White b. 1697-1699

#15 Daniel White b. abt. 1660

#16 Sarah White nee Mason

#17 Jane White nee Staines

#18 Mary White nee Tyler

a double one with #19 Sarah White nee Brown

#20 Mary Ardley nee Green added profiles for husband and children, tabulated census data

#21 William Geen - added profiles for children and spouse

# 22 Maria Green nee Mott

#23 Richard Green added census, profiles for children and added sources

#24 Sarah Green nee Constable added profiles for children

#25Thomas Green

# 26 Samuel Green

#27 Ann Peck nee Green

#28 Ann Green nee Meers

# 29 Nancy Ray Johnson nee Blackbourn added profiles for parents

#30 William Blackbourn b. 1748 added profiles for wives and children

#31 Ann Blackbourn nee Ray

#32 William Blackbourn b. 1775

#33 Elizabeth Blackbourn late Lawrence nee Adams

#34 Elizabeth Preese nee Green

#35 Elizabeth Green nee Howell

#36 Margaret Urquhart Brown nee Bremner added profile for husband, list of children & census. now adding profiles for children
