Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge.

Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to take a look at the Notables List page, where you can find lists of Notables who have profiles which aren't yet connected to the main tree. (For ideas on way to connect unconnected people and branches, see the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and noone can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. And they should be DEAD! If you manage a profile for any living notable, would you please replace any Notables categories on that profile with [[Category:Living Notables]]? That could clear out a lot of profiles that people can't work on from the various Notables categories, and also keep all the living notables in one place to make them easy to find, should the need arise.

Wikipedia has a list of those who died Last month.Sept 2019

Requesting help to connect Tommy Bolin (solo artist, and also a member of Deep Purple). His mother was Syrian and his father of Swedish descent, so he didn't have any old colonial American ancestry to easily connect him to the Tree. I would love assistance from someone who can help with Swedish and/or Syrian genealogy.

I'm not sure who might be able to help with Syrian ancestry, but I think we have a few who can assist with the Swedish side. Let me see if I can remember who did some of that recently and I'll name-drop them here.
I sent you a private message, but then figured I can do a lot of this myself. I have updated the biography to include many details of his professional life. It also includes his mothers full name, as well as all his siblings names. None of them have profiles (I know his younger brother Johnnie is still living). His mother has several siblings listed on Find a Grave, so maybe there's a connection to be made there. Hopefully I can do some more poking around this weekend.
Tommy Bolin is now connected. The trick is usually to find a sibling or cousin with an anglo-saxon spouse who is usually ultimately connected somewhere up the chain.
Awesome! After updating his biography with his mother's full name and seeing what was on Find a Grave I figured the connection could be made. Thanks for picking up the ball and running with it!
The connection was through Tommy's aunt's husband's brother's wife's 4th great grandfather! Pretty circuitous.

While reviewing five star profiles for the France project last month, I noticed that the sculptor Rodin was completely unlinked (unconnected and having no family members attached).  This was remarkable, as his profile was created during the early days of WikiTree, back in 2009.  I've started adding family members but haven't identified a connection path.  Hopefully I'll find one as I continue my research this month.

Thanks for checking into Rodin, Greg! It would be awesome to have him connected, and at the very least, very cool to have his family listed.

Photographer Napoleon Sarony is now connected to the global tree.

Nice work, Greg!

Definitely got distracted by the Source-A-Thon, but lots of profiles with added sources as a result, so all good stuff.

Still need to work on several Notables: Diahann Carroll, Toni Morrison, and English actor Paul Scofield.

I also saw a number of musicians recently passed, so I'll take a look at those as well as I can find time. Definitely a busy time in Notables lately.

Diahann Carroll is now connected to the tree.

Been a busy month - several Notables connected.

Diahann Carroll --> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Johnson-87115

Forrest Ackerman --> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ackerman-2301

Katherine Anne MacLean --> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLean-2932

And after the links update tonight, David Scofield should be connected --> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Scofield-849

I've also been doing some work on my own family, so small bits and pieces of progress made here and there.

Next will likely be Bruce Yerke on the Sci Fi front, who was involved with Forry Ackerman's fanzine as well as an author in his own right. From the Academy Awards list, looks like the next candidate for a profile and tree would be Sandy Dennis, who won Best Supporting Actress in 1967 for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?". Always another profile and family to add...

I found a couple of German Notables during the Source-A-Thon, sourced them and added the Sticker to them

So I picked up country music pioneer Jimmie Rodgers last month and am happy to say he is now connected to the tree. I unexpectedly found out that I am distantly related to his wife.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rodgers-4387

I am moving on to another country music personality, Jimmy Dean. His biography is good, but he needs connected.

Samiuela ʻAkilisi Pōhiva, Prime Minister of Tonga, died in September.

by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (678k points)
I found something about his family at https://web.archive.org/web/20100213190804/http://kitwithers.fortunecity.com/tonga/tonga.html but it's using a notation system I don't recognise, so I can't decode it.

Artist Mary Lee Abbott died in August, I connected her up with the Grinnells of NYC "Society" on her mother's side and the descendants of Presidents Adams on her father's.

Here is a link to her obit with photographs of her work! http://archive.is/IWuXW

While sourcing unsourced Canadians I found Benjamin Wolhaupter and put a Notables sticker on his profile as he has an entry in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.

Sometimes it is really astonishing to see how many notables are still not noticed.

Unnoticed notables duly noted!

This week I was looking at DBE #723 - "Prefix in First Name" and noted that many are nobility "titles." I also note that many are PRE-1500 which I cannot fix. It appears that the majority were created being dragged in with a Gedcom with no supporting sources.

This is an opportunity for those interested in notables to eliminate errors and at the same time cement those persons in their place in the world-wide tree.

Some new-to-WikiTree English notables whom I had to add in the process of connecting other people:

I created a profile for recently deceased French actress Marie-José Nat (obviously perfectly unknown in the US, but she was quite famous in France in the 1960s and 1970s, though her popularity faded since). It turns out she was fairly easy to connect through her brother-in-law's marriage to a Rothschild, and luckily, her other husband provided an easy connection for Claude Lanzmann (died about one year ago and was mentioned here at the time - I'm not linking the profile yet as it's really not worth the trip at this stage).

This family is also connected to influential film director Jean-Pierre Melville (still busy adding ancestors for him).

Unfortunately so far only Marie-José and her husband Michel Drach (film director) have some sort of bio - hope I can improve the others soon.

c'est bien ça, me semble me souvenir des Gens de Mogador.

Two more Notables connected:

Alan Zaslove --> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Zaslove-2 - Director/Producer of animated movies - passed in October

Julie Gibson --> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sorey-31 - previously the oldest living actress, died recently at 106. She acted in numerous shows, was a singer, had several records, but was most well-known for her roles on the Three Stooges shows. Thanks to Summer for setting up her initial profile - I can only say that I helped a little on this one.

I have just connected Roy Chapman Andrews to his ancestors. This should go through overnight.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Andrews-8377

Roy was a Natural History Musem employee and explorer. He discovered a number of fossilised dinosaur eggs in the Gobi desert in Mongolia and is said to be the original Inspiration for the character of Indiana Jones.

There is one connection for which I have had to use a family tree because I cannot find any records that make the connection between the birth place (connecticut) and the place of death (wisconsin).

Not even the census records are of any help. That far back (1840 and earlier) they dont name the children which REALLY does not help!!

by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

Have also added Roy's first wife Yvette Borup, to Wikitree and added those necessary ancestors to get her connected to the global tree as well. She too is also a Notable.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Borup-22

Have just discovered, now that Yvette is connected, that she is a direct descendent of Mary Boleyn - aka the "other Boleyn girl"  -  who was also the sister of Anne Boleyn!!

I have a question: During the last week I added the {{wikidata}} template to the Notables on my watchlist. Is their WikiTree-profile now automatically added to their wikidata-"profile"? From what I see at Mileva Marić, this should be the case...
by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
I really don't understand enough of how Wikidata works to answer this - sorry.
The help page for the {{wikidata}} template is at: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Links_to_Wikidata

It only adds a link to that person's Wikidata entry, so somebody must have already gone into Wikidata and add the WikiTree profile number already.

Please add me to the project! I'm trying to add/connect more notables to my own tree, so all can benefit. Especially interested in royal notables, Marilyn Monroe, and Patsy Cline because I have surnames in common with them all. Thanks!

Finally got around to creating the profile for author T. Bruce Yerke:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Yerke-14

Was sidetracked by working on several Fulkersons and other members of my own family. And then this purple squirrel ran by called Westinghouse who needed a little TLC on his ancestral lines. But all good - progress continues to be made.

by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
OK - after a number of twisty turny connections, I've got the confirmation this morning that Bruce is now connected to the Global Tree. Another group of Unconnected's go green (or whatever you call it when the little puzzle piece disappears).
