Trying to find connection between Arad Tuttle and Van Renssalaer - possibly Revolutionary War.

Question

Arad Tuttle (born in New Haven, CT in 1766) resided in Stephentown, NY in 1790 and moved with brother, Joel, and father, William, to Bradford County PA prior to 1800. Arad named one of his sons Van Renssalaer Tuttle, which is somewhat curious since is it not a traditional Tuttle name. Van Renssalaer Tuttle also named one of his sons the same as Jr.  Trying to find the connection between Arad and Van Renssalaer.

There wouldn't have to be a family connection for a child to be named after this very prominent family.

I have the connection in my mother's early genealogy work. Arad Tuttle b. 30 Apr 1766, Waterbury CT. d. ca. 1820. Buried Sandusky, OH Colwell Cemetery. , marrried Sarah Halstead, b. 30 Sep 1770, Kakiak, Orange, NY. d. aft 1801. They had nine children. Van Renssalaer was b. ca 1789, Vermont. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Halstead b 9 Dec 1723/24, d. 31 Oct 1806. Arad was the son of William Tuttle, b. 14 Jan 1744, d. ____.

Obituary Notice in "The True Republic" (July 27, 1880) of Neillsville, Clark County, WI

Mr. Rensalear Tuttle, aged 90 years, 10 months and 28 days, died at the residence of his son, in the town of Weston, July 15, 1880. Mr. Tuttle was born in Connecticut. He lived many years in Ohio, and came to Clark county about 7 years ago. He leaves two children, a large number of grand children, and a goodly number of great grandchildren. Funeral services took place at the Hyslip school house last Saturday forenoon, and were attended by many friends and relatives of the deceased. Rev. W. T. Hendren conducted the services. The age of 93, nearly 94 years, is more than the common measure of life. Indeed, we believe Mr. Tuttle was, with one or two exceptions, the oldest person in the county.

I came across an interesting Death Record for a Van Rensalaer Tuttle.

Place of death: Canaan, ME. DOD: 16 Dec 1898; age 86 years. Birth: Canaan, ME. W/M Lumberman. Cause of death: Cancer of the Stomach. Burial: Village Cemetery, Canaan.

Notation on Find a Grave says he married the widow of his brother, Wentworth, Helen C. Gilman?

To me, it infers another line of Tuttles using Van Rensalaer, too. So maybe not so unusual overall?

A second look and I found that in 1860, Van lived with his father Wentworth, age 83. A couple of lines down, there was his brother, Wentworth and wife Hellen.

I have found but not confirmed that Arad Tuttle (b. 30 April 1766) in Waterbury, New Haven, Conn. was the father of Van Renssalaer Tuttle.  According to my notes (no source listed - I'd just begun my work on this line of my husband's family when I made those notes -- Arad married in Sandusky, Ohio, Martha or Sarah Halstead.  Arad died in 1825, but have no place mentioned.  I do have his father listed as William (born 14 Jan 1744; married 8 Aug. 1765 at Waterbury Tapher Cassel, and died 1792 in Bradford Co., Penn.

I also have notes going back 5 more generations to a Simon Tuttle and Isabel Wells in Northamptonshire, England in 1560, but until I confirm that connection between Arad and Van Rensselaer, I hesitate to share or to spend time confirming.

I have no information about your Arad Tuttle, but I haven't worked on my husband's line in some time.  Given this impetus, I will pursue the Olney Tuttle mentioned below.

Unverified notes from my sister-in-law's files:  One Olney Tuttle (about whom I have no additional information) had the following children: 1) Van Rensselaer b. 1789 2) Walcott married Polly Sanford, then Ann Hoskins 3)Sarah Tuttle Conrad 4) Erastus married Polly Lemon and 5) Ross

I have verified much of this data:  This Van Rensselaer Tuttle married Patience Powell in 1812 & had 12 children, among them Lemmon b. 1813 and Arad, b. 1819.  Erastus Tuttle also had a son named Arad (I know nothing more of this Arad.

Lemmon Tuttle (my husband's line) married Filora Gould and had 9 children, among them another Arad, b. 1845.
