Stuff I put on my One Name Study pages

2.0k views

When I'm building a new One Name Study project page, there are some things that I add in by default. I think it helps to make the study look like something's happening.

I put in a

Resources
header, and then I add in the following lines:

* List of Grubstakes on Wikitree

* G2G feed of questions tagged "Grubstake".

* Orphaned Grubstake profiles on WikiTree.

* Unsourced Grubstake profiles on WikiTree.

* Unconnected Grubstake profiles on WikiTree.

This should produce five links to special pages on WikiTree, listing all the profiles on WikiTree with a given surname, all the G2G posts with that name in the subject or tags, and profiles with that name as the Last Name At Birth that are orphaned, have the Unsourced template applied to them, or are not connected to the main tree.

To use these links on a One Name Study, just copy them in, and then replace each instance of Grubstake with the name of your study, and each instance of GRUBSTAKE with the name of your study in ALLCAPS.

Note: I got the name "Ferdinand Grubstake" from a very funny friend who used to use it in a skit. As far as I know, the name "Grubstake" is entirely fictional, so I use "Ferdinand Grubstake" as a "sample" name when I'm writing an explanation of something.

Greg,

Thanks. Because I adopted some profiles that aren't connected and I have spent a lot of time trying to connect them.  Sometimes it looks like I am no longer active, but I am retired from a paying job!  Ancestry is my full time job! 24/7 and I wouldn't have it any other way...it's so addictive!!!

Taylor

My thanks to all of you for your kind words. I was hoping that these snippets would be useful to others. Whatever helps to make WikiTree more useful and attractive to cousins is a good thing.

Just found this post and immediately added it to my favourites. I used all five links when starting the Ostermann ONS last months, copying them from the Geisinger ONS. Evidently, your example, Greg, is making the rounds even if not all ONS coordinators are aware of the origin of the concepts they use ... ;-)

Thanks bunches!

Somebody once said, “There is no limit to what can be accomplished if it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.” If these ideas help to make One Name Studies better, then great. Nobody needs to put my name on anything.

(But if they make things worse, then yeah, sure. You can blame me.)

Greg I had a good laugh at your comment. Yes I added these 5 research recommendations to my Stephens and Hampson One Name Studies. Yes everything helps us. Thank you for everything you do to help us too.
At least we can be glad that your name has been put on WikiTree ;-)

Which reminds me of another saying: "Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
Oliver, very good, I like it. Thank you.
Love this and will use this.  I already changed one of my studies' pages.
Lorraine I am happy you are finding it useful too.
Greg yes it is very addictive. My addiction started in 1978 before we had electronic helps. All the time I was in the service in the US and across the pond I was using snail mail to get answers. My hand would now cramp from all the writing I had done. LOL  Welcome to retirement too.

Here are two other links that I put on, although one of them only applies to surnames from the United Kingdom:

* British Surnames: Grubstake

* Internet Surname Dababase: Grubstake

The first entry also includes a link to Burke's General Armory (as available on the Internet Archive), so to use it, you'd need to search within that book for the surname of your One Name Study, and then change the page number (and number of people who have been assigned coats of arms) to suit. Burke's won't help for coats of arms from countries outside the UK, which is no problem for me, since all of my family lines lead back to the UK, but for your One Name Study, you may well need to find some other source. (And, of course, if there is no coat of arms issued to somebody with the name of your study, you can just leave out that whole link.)

by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (679k points)

Ah. The Internet Surname Database doesn't have a result for "Grubstake" either, so I think I can confidently use "Ferdinand Grubstake" as a sample name without hurting anybody's feelings.

Very Cool, Ferdinand!  :-D

I had some of those already, but I added the Unsourced profiles to my Auld Name Page, as well as the links to the surnames pages listed in the answer you added later.  Much Appreciated!
by Chuck Auld G2G6 Mach 1 (14.0k points)
Chuck,

What do you mean by adding unsourced profiles? Are these unsourced profiles the same name as your name study?

Just want to be sure I understand what you mean.

Taylor
The link above Greg had that lets you see all profiles with the surname of Auld, that are considered "Unsourced". I didn't know how to access that list before, so now the link is added to the Auld Name Page.

Below are One Name Studies that I manage. You can see that they have similar structures as each other, and more than the average name study. The Weddington Name Study is the one that has the most content at this point.

Eric,

I checked out your Weddington Name Study to see what it looked like and I was amazed at how professional it was.  I have had mine Fritz Name Study a long time and it's nothing compared to yours.  I adopted a lot of empty profiles so I have to source them first.

People like you show us what our Name study's can look like we just have to figure out how to get there!

Wikitree needs to provide a basic area on how to build a name study that teaches us how to build them up to be awesome like yours.

Thank you so much for sharing your sites

Thanks for the kind words, Taylor! I would be happy to provide any recommendations to anyone regarding One Name Studies.

On the FAQ page, there are links to example profiles:

On the ONS Project page, there are ideas for your ONS:

Or you could go to the ONS index and just pick a Name Study and have a look at it:

Ros,

Thanks for showing me where all that wonderful information is located.  I am sure that I am not the only one that will benefit from your post.

I need to see what surnames have been taken thus far to see if some of my ancestors surnames are open.

Thanks again Ros you are tops!!!!

Of the three One Name Studies I'm running, I have only found one external site devoted to that surname. (I've run across a few others, but they're not for One Name Studies I manage.) For that site, I'll put up the code as it is. If you find a site devoted to the name for your One Name Study, the description may end up being very different.

* Slade Genealogy: a personal project listing thousands of Slades worldwide, with a particular emphasis on the United States. For the purposes of this study, the Branches page may be useful, as it lists the "Earliest Slades" that the webmaster has uncovered so far.

Thanks Greg - very useful.

I add a section on name origin and have some generic sources about the development of surnames in England that may be useful to others as well:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:History_of_the_Turvey_surname#Surname_origin

I also give a list of the earliest known holders of the name, including any prominent families.

Distribution is also normally useful - the best sites are unfortunately now offline so I use https://www.ancestry.co.uk/name-origin?surname=hogarth

# This number is derived by taking the 63 Slades listed on Wikipedia, and subtracting 3 entries where Slade is not their Last Name At Birth, 3 fictional characters, and 28 living Slades.

# "Sourced?" asks whether this profile has any source(s) other than Wikipedia. If you can find another source for notable Slade who does not have any other sources, please add it to that profile (then edit this page to put "Yes" in that cell).

# "Connected?" asks whether this person's profile has been connected to the main tree. If you see links at the bottom of the profile listing how many degrees that person is from the profile of the week, the WikiTreer of the week, and King Henry VIII, then their profile is connected to the main tree. (If so, please edit this page to put "Yes" in that cell.)

Another site that I track on my One Name Studies is ThePeerage.com, which is one man's attempt to transcribe the entirety of Burke's Peerage into a web site, and connect up all the intermarriages between families in the peerage. (So a lot of the profiles listed on the site are for people who are not actually peers themselves, but part of connection paths between families that are in the peerage.) Probably most surnames from the United Kingdom are going to have some kind of entry on the site, along with a number of aristocratic families from continental Europe. (I frequently come across profiles with French names while checking through the names I'm studying.)

Here is the code that I put up on the Slade Name Study page.

#* We need to make sure that all 199 deceased Slades listed on ThePeerage.com have profiles on WikiTree, and are sourced and connected to the main tree.

#** Progress:

#*** added: 133/1993 profiles = 66.8%

#*** sourced: 85/199 profiles = 42.7%

#*** connected: 133/199 profiles = 66.8%

The URL (http://thepeerage.com/i3494.htm#s49661) is what I get when I go to http://thepeerage.com/surname_index_S.htm and click on the "Slade" link. (The number beside each surname also lists the number of profiles on the site with that surname.) I have to reset the URL every once in a while, as Darryl repaginates the index from time to time.

Here's some more code from my Slade Name Study. I put in a "To Do" section, with various goals. I've also built a spreadsheet to track progress on various measures, and put up charts from that spreadsheet every couple of months.

Tasks
If you've put up all of the Slades in your family (or at least all the ones you've found so far), and are looking for something else to do, here are some tasks that you might be willing to help with:

#* We need to have sources for all the profiles on WikiTree. Specifically, we need at least one (and preferably more) sources added for all the Unsourced Slade profiles on WikiTree. (This can count towards the Sourcerers Challenge if you're feeling competitive.) For information on sourcing profiles, see the Sources help page and the Sourcerers Project.

#** Progress: 2083/21531 profiles = 96.8%

# Categories:

#* We need to make sure that each Slade on WikiTree has the appropriate categories applied to their profile. For information on categories, see the Categorization help page and the Categorization Project.

# Merging:

#* We need to merge any duplicate profiles for the same person into one profile for that person. For information on merging profiles, see the Merging help page.

While I am am very lacklustre with my one name study, I seem to find too many other things to do on Wikitree. I have recently been involved with forming a spreadsheet of records found at a local county records office of all my surname records luckily it is not an over common spelling... I moved this to google sheets so that the person actually visiting ( I am in Thailand so visits have some problems )  can add edit it as well as myself. I then realised it is possible to add this google spreadsheet in "read only form" to your one name study. Google updates it every 5 mins so it stays in sync with the one you are working on. Of course if anyone is particularly interested and has further information you can give them editing rights via email. It seems a shame not to share the resources you have.

Shareable spreadsheets are a great tool for collaborating. I'm going to have to check into putting some of mine online.

So I finally put up a spreadsheet as an experiment. When I was working on Whites in February, I only got as for as tallying Whites from ThePeerage.com and from Wikipedia with first names starting from "A" through "J".

So, I uploaded my White Name Study spreadsheet to GMX.com. The link is: https://c.gmx.com/@557630630498670822/7ovVWh7OTNeh6oa77mdXUQ From that link, you should be able to download the spreadsheet and edit it on your own computer. You can:

 • see the Whites whom I am tracking so far,
 • add sources for unsourced Whites, (don't forget to take part in the Sourcerers' Challenge if you do!)
 • connect unconnected Whites, (don't forget to take part in the Connectors' Challenge if you do!)
 • add new Whites from ThePeerage.com,
 • add new Whites from Wikipedia with given names starting with "J",
 • add a worksheet for Whites in your own watchlist, and, optionally, include those numbers in the "Dashboard" worksheet,
 • generate new charts from the "Dashboard" worksheet, and post them wherever you want. (Well, okay, probably not on the page for a different one name study. wink At least, not unless you edit the worksheets and the charts to use that surname instead.)

If you do this, and make your own edits, please send your edits back to me by January, so I can include them in this February's report.

I'm moving the text about House of Names out of a previous message to a new one, because the new code I want to add is so closely related to it:

This code is from the == Tasks == section:

#Coats of Arms:

#* It would be great if we could find (or create) well-rendered, but public domain, images of the various Slade coats of arms listed in Burke's General Armory, to add to the profiles of those people who have the right to bear each of them.

#** Progress: not started

This text is from the == Resources == section:

* House of Names: Grubstake Crests, Coat of Arms, and Name History Note: a bunch of sites selling coats of arms use this version, but Burke's General Armory lists five different coats of arms for different Grubstake individuals, so your line may be associated with a different coat of arms (or none at all, if you can't demonstrate descent from one of the people who were awarded coats of arms).

(The page link for Burke's General Armory, and the number of different coats of arms listed there, would of course be different for each surname.)

Something I only recently thought of was suggesting that people ask to be added to the trusted list of each One Name Study page, so they'll be notified any time somebody posts a comment to the page, or any time the page is edited. The code I'm using is:

If you want to be notified whenever somebody edits this page or adds a comment, please click here to be added to the trusted list.

Hi

I've just found this and used it to set a freespace family name study as I can't get a response from the one name studies leaders as yet [only two days so far] and have had trouble contacting one name studies.

I've copied and adapted your codes with great success, but have problems with the one for unsourced profiles, I get lots of other profiles with names Wikitree consider similar.

Is there a code to search for exact name?

once I get everything working right for Rosevear I'll repeat for the other name variants

The other one I had problems with was orphaned profiles. I can't test the link as I have too large a watchlist, I only wanted to view the list as a research tool.

Gary
by Gary Burgess G2G6 Mach 7 (75.9k points)

That's the way the unsourced search works: it's not actually searching for a specific name, it's just searching for unsourced profiles starting with the first profile matching the specified surname. It's just that, with only six unsourced Rosevears, the next surname in the alphabet starts on the seventh line. With some surnames, you can get 20 or more pages of hits before you start seeing other surnames. If it bothers you, maybe only do the unsourced search on pages for surnames with at least a full column of hits on that specific surname.

As for the orphaned search, it turns out that it only returns unconnected orphaned profiles, so https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special%3AUnconnected&mId=10209961&order=dateup&viewAll=1&privacy=0&orphans=0&s=ROSEVEAR only gives me 12 hits.

Ah. https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAdoptions&cln=&order=&s=ROSEVEAR also gives connected orphaned hits. I'll have to change the search link on the studies I manage.
