Genealogically Speaking I am speechless ... at least about some matters ... advocacy is all very fine but you need a Public that is equally concerned ... LOL ...

COUSINS, NOW, there's a fertile field -- bless the cousins for without them and their fecundity my contributions would have been long since done with about June of 2018. Short stories were made longer by cousins

WEATHER-wise I don't know about other parts of CA but WE didn't see that nasty wind (in the Central Valley) that was predicted and not being in the PG&E grid we didn't have a black out ... breezy, yes, I'll give you that ... but it didn't seem immoderate ... in Reno several times we saw 100 mph winds roar through .... now THAT is immoderate wind ...

WE are now officially restricted to twice-week watering (residential) limited to certain clock times ... they're expecting a dry winter I guess -- at least our water district seems to be expecting it ... we did for a short time early in the year have thrice-weekly watering ... for a short time ...

AND I wish you all a merry weekend, may it be pleasant for you
Thanks for hosting Pip! From my seat, you brighten so many lives every day, on WikiTree and off, and care for so many.  Sometimes its easy to forget what you're accomplishing, and focus only on that which is not done. Please don't judge yourself too harshly.

@Gaile, Pip, all that stressing out over what? My wager is that 80% of all stress experienced on all levels is self-induced. The balance is due to circumstances. "Sand bags can't be put off until tomorrow" is the stress circumstances -- and "no, rather than bake 200 cookies, I will BUY 200 cookies at the local dollar store" avoids self-induced stress ... buy 4 fancy looking disposable platters (dollar store) 400 cookies (you get to keep the broken ones), cellophane wrap (they still have that right?) and have at it, voila 4 platters layered with cookies and delivered with smiles tomorrow ...

So if 10 tons of dirt isn't spread before the rain happens, the rain will certainly help spread it and if the plants aren't in the ground, there's always pots on the back porch, eh?

Pip, we all get caught up in the "busyness" of life, sometimes, and don't tell the people we care about that we do care. It's good to be reminded. I'm sorry for your loss of your old friend. I'm sure he knows your good heart. God bless you, my friend!

Ditto to what everyone said on this introduction. Pip yes thanks for hosting this WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Pip,

I am so sorry for this difficult year filled with loss which you have been going through. I agree with you that we need to tell the ones we love how much they mean to us, but don’t forget that they always knew this. They know it now. And we will be together again. May God grant you peace.

Paula
I will assume you have set up a Memorial for each person who has passed on? Profile of them, their parents, some Biography and some Memories you have? What better way to say you loved them?
I did that for my co-worker who died recently. I think I'll wait just a bit before starting Mike's. Still too early, I think.

@Pip -- I know it took me 8 yrs to come to any kind of terms with my father's death and as long with my mother's.  I was very unaccepting.  Another  30+ years to be able to create a profile about them ... it hurt, it still hurts. The dreams were disturbing on the one hand and comforting on the other hand.  I'd wake up crying or laughing, depending on what I had dreamed.  You will in time "move forward" as it is said nowadays.

Yeah, I thought, it takes forever to do that ..., but I have no reason to suppose it is not so, I CAN talk about them, I could create the profiles, the dreams are less frequent ... I can look forward to seeing them again is how I want to think about it now

Thanks, Susan. yes

Hello everyone, thank-you to all the 400 plus folks who participated in the Source-a-Thon last weekend. Good job.

The nice fall weather continues here in Central Pennsylvania. I noticed our flying friends, hawks, eagles, and other raptors are heading towards warmer temperatures in the South.

Pip you were missed last weekend. If you did not show up today, we were going to send the highway patrol out looking for you.

I added something new to my checklist while working on profiles, adding the Cemetery Category. At  a recent family gathering, my nephews and nieces were asking questions where passed generations were buried. Adding the cemetery category can organize that somewhat for future generations using the tree. I just have to figure out how to get some more cemeteries added to the current lists, that are available in the state and county lists right now, under the Cemetery Category.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

HI Rodney! First as usual I see. I missed being here, too. I love the Chat and it's a part of my regular week now, something I always look forward to.

I know the Category folks are getting tired of me sending requests for a new cemetery. I have a listing of all the cemeteries here in this county, and I've hesitated to ask for a cat for each one, some 70+ cemeteries.

Have a great week, Rodney. Fall is on its way here, too.
Thanks for the reminder Rodney. For some reason, I don't usually look for a cemetery category.

New England is so beautiful at this time of year. Enjoy the fall weather!
I wonder if making state/county cemetery categories is something I could dedicate some hours to this winter. I have to look into if I could qualify to do that, and see what steps and procedures are necessary.
Hi Laurie, have a good weekend, stay safe.
Hey Rodney,

Thanks for connecting with us last weekend......  You made a great "host".

As for cemeteries,  I've only created about 4 cemetery categories.... I certainly need to make more.
Hi Peggy, thank-you for the compliment.

When you say you created 4 cemetery categories, do you mean you actually put the state/county/cemetery name on the list for people to choose. Do you know if I can do that, and then how do you do it.
Years ago I created categories for my family cemeteries.....However,   WikiTree volunteers than started working on Cemeteries as a project and I haven't created any since then......I realized I'd need to coordinate with the project and haven't gotten around to it yet.    Since I really enjoy working with cemeteries,  I should someday investigate working on the Cemetery Project.     I've noticed the Project members have added a lot of information to the first cemetery category I created,   Elizabeth Hall, Logan County, Arkansas.
I will try and contact one of the folks on the Pennsylvania Cemetery Team. Thank-you Peggy, have a great weekend.

Ditto to what every one said on this chat.

Good Morning Everyone!

We have spent the week recovering from the work of getting the boat stripped down and hauled out for the winter in LaConner, WA. Then, the five day drive home to Texas - it was a long five days!! Guess we are getting older. Once home, the unloading and unpacking, stashing stuff away and the four large bags of accumulated mail most of which went into the recycle can. Life is almost normal at this point.

Last night we had dinner with one of my deceased cousins grandson who was attending a conference in Dallas. He is a delightful and interesting young man (40ish) and had a lot of questions about our Butter family history. We bored my husband for quite a while as he asked me about things I remembered about the family. It was fun!!!

I have jumped back into Greeting and G2G surfing. Tomorrow, I am attending a seminar sponsored by the Dallas Genealogical Society; so I guess I am full time back into genealogy and pursuing those elusive ancestors!

First cold front is working its way through north Texas with rain and wind this morning. Everyone here is looking forward to some fallish temps. Have a great weekend wherever you all are and may each of you break through a brick wall next week!!

by Virginia Fields G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)

So GOOD to have you back home, Ginny, even though you were occasionally able to keep in touch. I know you are glad for some cooler weather. David has been keeping me posting on how horribly hot it's been in Texas.

Welcome home Ginny!    Adventures are incredible,  but getting home is always great too.
Welcome home Ginny!  Its very nice you were able to chat with your young relative. Mine are torn between boredom and fascination, so I wait for them to ask, and just give them the requested information.  Its like talking sex ed to a six-year old.
Great to hear news from home Ginny; I sure do miss my summer scouting and early fall North Texas hunting!

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat here.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

SJ - I did not realize you were from Texas!! My husband hunts but is missing it this season as the owner of their lease had to sell his land due to health issues. I have lived in three other states but returned home to Texas in 2008 -  love it!!

Hello to all from beautiful southeastern Arizona. I know I say that a lot, but it's so true smiley Weather here has been gorgeous with mornings in the 50s and afternoons in the 80s. I give thanks daily for being here.

Writing: I finished writing my first novel, printed chapters 35-49, and gave those to my first beta reader. My other two readers are working on Chapters 20-35. It's been a long, slow process. I started writing it for the Nanowrimo back in November, 2016. I still need to check my Notes and Bibliography sections and write my Author Notes. I'm sure there will be a few changes needed to be done, but I must say I'm so relieved.

Home: It's been a week filled with meetings. I need to do some fall cleaning, but there just hasn't been enough hours in a day (or so I tell myself cheeky).

WikiTree: I enjoyed my first Source-a-thon. It was great chatting with the TreeNuts on Discord and being part of their team. I didn't source a huge amount of profiles. I got off to a slow start: the first 5 or 6 I looked at, I couldn't find any source. I shifted gears and changed to the 1800s Massachusetts where I was able to source many orphan profiles. I had to adopt a few to make changes and found out how to orphan a profile too! All in all, it was an enjoyable learning experience.

For the BioBuilders October colors challenge, I've been working on my Grandmother White's family. I'd been itching to work on her profile as it was a completely empty bio. It's been months since I contacted the PM and received no response. I've also uploaded an image of my Aunt Sue's typed family tree and created a Descendants of Thomas White space page. It's been over two decades since I scanned that document. I'm glad I did it when I had the chance! Thanks for your hard work, Aunt Sue!

While I was at it, I did the same for the Brennans who are Descendants of Geoffrey O'Connell and Honora McCroghan. I'm curious how accurate my aunt's tree is. She's been almost spot on with our most recent ancestors :) I'm sure I'll need to ask for help long before I reach O'Connell back in 1569! She has a penciled note that Clara O'Mahony and Daniel "The Liberator" O'Connell were fourth cousins.

Well I need to scoot. Two meetings this morning and then volunteer time at the Senior Center.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend!

by Diane Hildebrandt G2G6 Pilot (109k points)
Finally! You got it done, Diane. I was wondering if you'd be able to resolve that militia background. Good for you.

I agonize over my own Chat post. I couldn't imagine trying to write my novel (in outline form only right now). Saying things exactly right to get my meaning across, grammar, punctuation, structure.... argh!

Writing structure and grammar has always been an agonizing process. I often have to leave it "percolate" (no, no, no, I am not addicted to coffee, well maybe just a tad blush) and then go back to it.

What was worse -- having it critiqued by my writing group. I felt wounded for a few weeks afterward. They did give some excellent points, and my novel changed focus entirely from the first draft. I think it's much better now. At least, I hope so! Now will have to wait on my readers.

Go for it, Pip. It will never get written when you just leave it in outline form. Block an hour (or two!) out of each day and work on it. You'll eventually be glad you did smiley

That's exactly what I need to do. Block out some time each day just for the writing. If WikiTree would allow it! laugh (HERESY! Wikitree rules my life!)

Congratulations Diane!  Finishing the book is a marvellous achievement. I'm looking forward to joining the ranks of your readers.
Congrats on the book!

Thanks Laurie and SJ! smiley

Thanks for hosting the chat this week Pip,

I actually had the time in the last couple of weeks to reduce my watchlist a bit, it is still too big in my opinion but it is going in the right direction. I even had time to source some profiles, I did not participate in the Source a Thon, and create one for a Notable who was not only a rock star but a ham as well, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Junstrom-1 . I worked at the pumpkin Festival from 5:30 until 7:39 Friday night then from 8 until 6 both Saturday and Sunday. The radio club booth had a slide show running as well as a message playing on a loop in Morse Code. https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Photos_and_sources_for_Dale_Byers-13 We had a lot more positive attention than in the past and I have already been asked to do the next event, not until April thankfully. The woman I mentioned in my post 2 weeks ago died at the age of 33 last week, she does not have a profile on WikiTree because she was adopted from a Latin American country and never married or had children so I do not have the time to do the research needed to create a good profile. We finally found enough people willing to run for the offices open in our ham club but there is only one person per position so the election is going to real short, I guess I better get planning for the next year with my probable new position in the club. I started a class on Emergency communications this week, it runs for 9 weeks but I can work at my own pace and all of the lessons are available now so I think I will try to complete the class sooner. I had one of my radios break at the Pumpkin Festival and it would cost about 200 dollars to repalce it. I found the parts needed to fix it for about 11 dollars so I went that route. A new radio would be nice but with the difference in cost fixing the old one seems the logical choice. Well time to get back to working on reducing my watchlist, adding sources, and fixing suggestions for now.

by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
That watchlist has been a bugaboo for you, Dale. Keeping hammering away at it. I need to do the same! I created two whole new families of cousins this week and found some interesting stuff. Two World War II vets.

Do you ever have folks interested enough to want to sign up for radio classes when y'all have a booth set up? Seems with that much exposure, you would have a lot of interest.

Have a great week, Dale.
Pip, We had several people interested in upgrading or earning a new license at this event. Sadly I had no information to give them about possible classes this time, something I hope to correct before the next event in late April. We also had some interest from a local Boy Scout troop that we will follow up on. At the last event where I worked on the booth we actually had a class shortly after and one of those who expressed an interest did go to the class and earned his license.

I forgot to mention that a week ago my son left for Germany and he has now completed his first week of 3 over there. He has very little free time over there, he is working, but everything seems to be going smoothly so far.
My watch list is like the hedge, I prune and prune and hope to keep it to a manageable size.

I hope your son enjoys Germany. Good time of the year for it, not full winter, nor full of tourists.
Laurie, My son just started a Facebook group to share the many pictures he has already taken. Now if he would only start telling us what the pictures are.

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat.

Greetings WikiKindred,

I didn't get to do very much for the Source-a-Thon: the timing didn't work out very well for me. I've been pretty busy doing the grunt work for my wife's hardcore nesting. The lower attic is now properly insulated and a large plywood floor has been put down making tons of room for storage. We've I've since been busy hauling things up from the basement to go in the attic instead. Tomorrow my father-in-law and I are planning to start properly insulating the upper attic.

That may not happen though. I might be going instead to visit my mother's sister before her WikiTree profile is no longer required to be unlisted. She has breast/brain/spinal cancer and she's going on hospice. It's really hard on our family, especially my mother. She's the youngest of nine children (though one passed in infancy). About a year ago her favorite brother, my favorite uncle, lost his fight with colon cancer. This sister is the one she is currently closest to. I'm starting to babble a bit here, sorry, the more I write and the faster I write the less I feel what I'm saying.

by Thomas Fuller G2G6 Mach 9 (93.3k points)
Sorry about your aunt.
Hi Thomas. Always good to hear from you. So terribly sorry to hear about your losses. Those are always tough, especially those we've known for so long. I know just how you feel. Prayers for you and your family this week, here at home and at St. Pat's.
At my grandmother's 95th birthday bash, someone asked her the usual question about the secret to long life. She replied that the most important thing was to learn how to make friends with people younger than you. That was when I realized how many loved ones she had lost. Though the room was full of friends, she must have felt the same sort of loneliness at that moment that your mother is grappling with.  I'm sending hugs for her, for her sister, and for you!  They'll grow if you spread them around.

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Thomas I feel for you.  Cancer attacks an entire family and extended family in ways that until you go through it you can't imagine.   You and your family are in my prayers.

Currently, it's 12˚ C and sunny in Fort Erie, with a predicted high of 22˚ C, and a predicted low of 13˚ C with occasional showers tonight.

So sorry to hear about Michael, Pip. I, too, have had intentions to catch up with people that I put off until it was too late.

What with work and assorted medical issues, I haven't had much time for WikiTree this week. I've been trying to work on my French Name Study, but I keep getting distracted to do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. (I did at least learn that "Grubstake" doesn't seem to be a real surname, so I now feel free to keep using "Ferdinand Grubstake" as a sample name without worrying about hurting anybody's feelings.)

by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (669k points)

"Ferdinand Grubstake. " I remember that dude! laugh

Hope all is well with you and the love of your life and the delight of your eyes! Medical issues seem to have a way of intruding on our lives. Hang in there!

Recognize this tee?

I thought your G2G interventions were very helpful, Greg. When I was new to genealogy I wan't sure what was involved in a name study, and you've provided some great tips.

But language is a funny thing. I was scratching my head, reading this post, trying to figure out why you'd want to do a study on French names. A study on one name can be an awful lot of work (except perhaps Grubstake), and I would think a whole language or country might be biting off a bit more  ... but I got it now ... the surname "French". Ya.  Maybe its time for another coffee.
Take care of that shirt, Pip: it's the only one in the world with that design on it.
Yes, Laurie, I can see how that would be confusing. I have also seen surnames like "English", "German", "Welsh", and so on.

Today is....

NATIONAL SAUSAGE PIZZA DAY

Food lovers across the country enjoy National Sausage Pizza Day on October 11th each year. Whether served on a thin or thick crust, sausage pizza goes well with other toppings, too. Don’t hesitate to add mushrooms and a variety of cheeses. What’s even better about sausage pizza are the different kinds of sausage to choose from.

While Italian sausage may be preferred, try experimenting. Add more garlic or try additional spice. Try smoky sausages such as chorizo or even a kielbasa visit with your local butcher for sausage suggestions. They’ve probably been smoking up the latest experiment just for you to try.

Sausage comes in many combinations, too. Lighter forms and different ages offer flavors that complement our toppings. A little sweet with the savory creates a modern taste experience.

Sautéd onions add amazing flavor to sausage pizza. While cooking up the onions add a few portabella mushrooms to the pan. Once you’ve added them to your pizza, sprinkle the top with feta cheese and fresh basil. You won’t regret it.

Pizza Facts

  • In ancient Greece, the Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs, and cheese, which some attribute to the beginning of the pizza.
  • In Byzantine Greek, the word was spelled “πίτα,” pita, meaning pie.
  • The Romans developed a pastry with a sheet of dough topped with cheese and honey, then flavored with bay leaves.
  • The modern pizza had its beginning in Italy as the Neapolitan flatbread.
  • The original pizza used only mozzarella cheese, mainly the highest quality buffalo mozzarella variant. It was produced in the surroundings of Naples.
  • An estimated 2 billion pounds of pizza cheese was produced in the United States in 1997.
  • The first United States pizza establishment opened in New York’s Little Italy in 1905.

HOW TO OBSERVE #SausagePizzaDay

Invite friends and family over for homemade sausage pizza. Or go out for your favorite kind of sausage pizza and make it a celebration. While you’re out and about, be sure to give a shout out to your favorite establishment. Do you like thin or thick crust? How do you eat your pizza? Crust first, point first or do you fold it? We want to know. Everyone has their own pizza-eating styles.

Onion and Sausage Pizza
Chicago Deep Dish Sausage Pizza

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Yummy. I'll have a sausage and mushroom. Please use medium hot Italian sausage, crumbled and a medium crust. The marinara sauce should be similar to spaghetti sauce, but have more oregano and less basil. Use mostly mozzarella with some fresh grated Parmesan. Overall, it should be substantial enough that you eat it with a fork. If you insist, you can add sautéed onions and green pepper.
Well, darn it! We ate out after the appointment, so I'll have to hold off on the pizza until another day.
Sausage, green peppers, and onions on mine please. One thing I miss about the Chicagoland area is Edwardo's Pizza. They have the best deep dish spinach and pesto pizza. Oh wait, this is about sausage. lol
We had Pizza for lunch, not a plain sausage variety but it did have sausage on it so I hope that counts.

On this day:

1582: This day actually didn't exist, as the calendar was changed from Julian to Gregorian and so the calendar switched from 4 Oct to 15 Oct in one night.

1962: The Second Vatican Council was opened by Pope John XXIII

1977: The Brazilian State Mato Grosso do Sul was created

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.4m points)
First one: I guess that switch made everyone 11 days older all at once! I'd not like that, at least at my age now. No reason to rush things, right Jelena?
At the end of 2011 Samoa jumped from 29 Dec to 31 Dec. They wanted to be nearer to New Zealand and Australia with their timezone. But I agree with you, the time is rushing faster anyway, nobody needs to gain days without living them actually....
Actually depends on where. Britain and its colonies didn't change until 2 September 1752. It took more than 300 years from the 1582 date. It was a real mess
My birthday is today, so I guess if I had been around in 1582 I would have missed out on the cake and candles!  Well, I won't have any today, either, but I might have some of Dorothy's sausage pizza!  That sounds good on this chilly day.
Happy Birthday Michelle! Have a great day and an excellent year ahead
Thank you Jelena!  I wish you an excellent year, too.

Good weekend everyone.

It's a pretty fall day here at the campground about a mile from where the Blue Ridge Parkway crosses the James River. Later today we'll participate in some activities for my husband's 50th high school reunion. Next week our friends from Michigan will spend a few days here with us on their way to Florida.

I enjoyed Source-A-Thon, and worked mostly 133 suggestions and ones I found via find matches on my watch list. Other than that, I've gone down some rabbit holes by watching my surnames followed feed.

I am still searching non indexed images. It appears that my ancestors lived in an area in Connecticut that has very scarce records between 1778 and 1799. I probably won't be able to find sufficient evidence for the Mayflower Society. Oh well.
by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (593k points)
You're camping again! Good for you, Kay. Can't beat anything close to the Parkway. Getting the leaf change up your way? It hasn't started here yet, but it's getting close.
Maybe some brick walls will never be solved, but persistence often pays.  Its worth the effort !

Lovely to be out camping this time of year. Enjoy :)
No leaf change here is Catoosa County, Georgia!!
The colors are almost starting. It has been very dry, so there is not supposed to be much color this year. We have not yet driven the parkway (the two mile shortcut across the James River doesn't count). In past years we have noticed trees turn later heading north from here and earlier heading south.

Laurie,

Mary doesn't feel like a brick wall. There are just no birth records for her (or siblings or cousins) and no marriage records for her father or his siblings. Basically a lack of records between 1778 and 1804 in north Lebanon/Columbia Connecticut.

Mary is here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rood-536

Same here, Kay. A very dry late summer and early fall. I’m not expecting much color this fall.

We had our first snow yesterday with a couple inches. We set a new record low of nine degrees thus more breaking the old record by more than 10 degrees. And we almost set a record for biggest temp drop over 24 hours going from 83 on Wednesday to nine when I got up this morning.

So it is a great day to work on my cemetery study.
by Gurney Thompson G2G6 Pilot (443k points)
Snow??? Please keep it, I'm not yet prepared for snow. Admittedly I'm NEVER prepared for snow, I simply hate it. It looks pretty when I am inside and don't have to go out, but in the moment I have to go out, I hate it.
That's big a drop, Gurney, would be a bit much for me. I've been watching the Weather Channel, and now it more to see what other folks are getting. I saw that y'all were in for it.
And further, today it's going to push 50 and all next week in or close to the 70's ... tell that to my canna lillies!! lol
Oh my, snow?  I've been in shorts and flip flops all week and just went for a swim in the sea - snow sounds like a universe away!  That's a heck of a drop; sounds like midwest.
I forgot to say that I live near Denver, Colorado
And I'm about 60 miles north of Gurney ...
We haven't had snow yet, but we've just broken 90-year old cold records. Brrr.  Just hope your cemetery study involves computer work, not walking outdoors!

Hi My friend Pip

How are you doing thank You for hosting.

Going to be a busy night we have in Copenhagen cultur night that means we can get in free in all museum, churches, and you name it it is going to be a busy night except it is pouring with rain.

Any other country that have culture night would love to hear what you do if you have that.

Tuesday we are going with friends three weeks to Andalusia at least the sun are shining

So dear members how are you going to spend your evening and weekend love to hear from you please
by Susan Laursen G2G Astronaut (3.0m points)
Rod we went with some raincoat it was really raining but we want to se s much so we would not be stop of the rain.

How sad you don’t have that in Pennsylvania where you live.

Sound great you are going to the farmers house, you certainly are going to have a busy weekend thank You for sharing this
Laurie how great you can celebrate so many culture must be so amazing, so you gathered with a Scandinavian group sound great I love smorgasbord in Denmark we have them every day, did you like them?

Glad you enjoy your Scandinavia last weekend.

Thank You for sharing this
Susan, I didn't say it is today. We have that (in general), most cities I know of doing it have that in May or the summer months.
I know Jelena my English sorry I did not meant did you go out this evening I meant did you go out when it happens the culture

No culture night that I know of here in Catoosa County, Georgia..... just moved here in the Spring.   The community seems to thrive on hiking, camping, fishing and hunting.   But free museums sounds wonderful.

When we lived near Kansas City, Missouri,  their main museum was free except for a few  "visiting"  exhibits.  (Thanks to the Nelson-Atkins Families).

500px-Photos_for_Peg-18.jpg

The musuem usually had very tasteful pieces of art,  but around 1995 they placed giant  Shuttlecocks on their main lawn..... which didn't particularly match the more classical architecture and gardens.    But I'm certainly no art critic.

Thanks for sharing your Culture Night!!

Yes Julie...... I've seen his work in many other places!   Perhaps YOU are the art enthusiast.

It's been a long two weeks since the last Chat. Have been working on some of the landscaping that I plan to do. The rest will be hired out since it is a big job and really needs someone who knows what they are doing to get it done. The weather had held for most of the time with nice low to mid 70s (low 20sC). Then this week we slid temporarily into winter. On Tuesday it was a high of 78 (~26C) and then we had a more than 50 degree drop to 22 (-6C) overnight and with about an inch of snow. Never reached freezing yesterday and woke up to it being 14 (-10C) this morning. Needless to say, Tuesday was quite busy getting the remainder of the garden picked before the hard freeze. Now have to finish processing them for the winter.

Genealogically its been slow. Didn't have time to participate in the thon but did a little bit of work on some of my profiles but mostly not getting much done. Did look at some of the DNA matches I've gotten and a closer look at FTDNA's changes to my Y haplogroup (more people have gotten the Big700 so it is getting refined). Still  to find a 4th cousin in my surname line to take a Y test.

Hope all have a great and productive weekend.

Have a great weekend Doug!  I hope you thaw out enough to enjoy the yard work.
Saw the weather that was heading your way, Doug, and was wondering if you’d gotten everything in yet.
We've thawed out (its currently just about 60F/15C at present. Got everything that was freeze sensitive in so now I have to find the kitchen again under the piles of vegetables. Of course, things weren't going to be busy enough dealing with that, I went to the farmers market and got more fruit to put up. They had elephant heart plums (my wife's favorite and not always available here) so will be making jams, etc. with those. The next few days will be busy.
Nothing like adding to the bounty from the farmers' market, Doug.

Pip,

Thanks for reminding us of the importance of re-connecting and staying connected with family and friends.   It's easy to get distracted...

Photo:   View of Pike Peaks from a long time friend’s deck in Colorado Springs.   Ahhhhhhhh.  (OK, OK,  I’ll admit another mutual long time friend took the picture,  he was trying to entice us to come visit.)

Genealogy:  way too much to handle for one week.   Mainly documents and photos sent from people contacting me on ancestry.com.    Still haven’t recovered from the  Source-A-Thon weekend……

So much to do, so little time.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

Been a busy two weeks!  On the homefront, the wife and kids came home early in order to bring mother-in-law.  This hampered my source-a-thon effort somewhat but oh well.

We made it to the 3 month mark and got a good ultra-sound and verified that #3 will be arriving in April.  We're very excited and happy for the new addition to the family.

I find myself all the time answering the question how to make a medal template for a veteran's profile so I am putting on one space page all of the United States decorations, awards, and badges and instructions how to add the sticker template.  I chip away at it a bit each day and it is coming along: United States Armed Forces Decorations, Awards, and Badges.

I answered a post to create a profile for a Medal of Honor winner.  I spruced up the profile and then got him created.  He is tenatively listed as a 7th cousin: Francis Currey

Weather remains normal for Spain: perfect

Looking forward to reading everyone's replies this weekend - missed you all last weekend ;-)

Enjoy your beautiful weather, and your growing family!
Congrats on #3. I wish one of my children would provide me with a grand baby! Thanks for your hard work on the US armed forces decorations. I'm sure many of us will find it useful :)

LOL Diane, have you considered bribing them?  I have a good friend and his grandma set up a family trust.  When you have a baby, the trust pays you $15,000.  She has no problem with grandkids, or in this case, great-grandkids wink

Oh, SJ, I am so happy for you and your wife! Another little one. What a blessing.
thanks!

Greetings from Everett, Washington!

I missed the Weekend Chat last week! I was looking forward to posting my TV interview that appeared in Seattle last Wednesday,  Here is the link:

https://q13fox.com/2019/10/09/the-mukilteo-lighthouse-is-packed-with-history-and-stunning-views/

I don't know how long the link will last, so watch soon.  I'm the animated speaker in the coat with the lighthouses.  I'm telling a story about the rescue of a crew of drunken sailors.  My husband said I reminded him of a Monty Python sketch in which Graham Chapman is pantomiming to Terry Jones a disembowelment committed by one of the Piranha brothers.

Weather has been chilly (for here) with temperatures in the 30s overnight and frost on the roofs. The robins have come to gorge on the mountain ash berries and leave their guano on the car I park under the tree.  I clean off the car when I and my son go to a local church parking lot on weekdays so he can practice driving.  I need to find another place where he can practice that is safe and where his mistakes won't be costly.

We are in the process of purging.  Soon, too soon, we are getting new carpeting to replace the unspeakable mess below me.  All the books and filing cabinets around this table, and the table itself, will be moved somewhere else temporarily.  I dread being able to find anything after it's all over.  Oh, well, I survived the replacement of the computer so maybe it's all for the best.  Sure would be nice if I could find great-grandpa Robe's 1851 original Oregon Trail diary, which is in a little leather-bound book SOMEWHERE in this house.  It will either be found or it will be buried deeper. I have a photocopy but it would be nice to safe keep it. Don't know where I had it last but that was maybe 2015 that I saw it last.

It is so true that we need to clear time as well as space to visit those who mean so much to us.  I want to visit my brother in Los Angeles again.  I need to find the paperwork from the birth certificate I requested when my daughter went to Germany in 2016...next year Washington state will require a passport or enhanced driver's license for all air travel.  So I have to apply for new documents if I want to fly anywhere.  Another round of digging through papers to find stuff, or else reapplying for the documentation.

Speaking of which, my husband couldn't find the deeds to this house or his mom's house which he needs to have the septic tank work approved.  He went to the King County Recorder's office in Seattle and came back saying never again will he go to Seattle.  Then his signature wouldn't scan.  He got all the paper work done, however, and now it's a matter of waiting for the State Health Department to schedule the inspection of his mom's property.  All this for the purpose of turning his childhood home into an adult care facility.  In the end we will assess whether all this costs more, or less, than long-term nursing care for his mom. But at least the property will have been greatly improved.

I look forward to a happy week of writing local history articles for the newsletter and the monthly magazine, and preparations for the cemetery tour the night before Halloween.  Oh, and clearing all the valuable items ("junk") out of this room.

Sorry, this content is not available in your region.

sad

Neither in my region...
I have been to the Mukilteo Lighthouse.  It is a lovely area.  The editor chopped up your story -- I would have loved to hear the whole tale about the drunken sailors!
Oddly, I can watch it in Canada.  Fox knows what side of the border I'm on most of the time, but this one snuck past 'em.  I LOVE the lighthouse sweater Margaret, and don't listen to your husband, he's just jealous that you did so well.  I didn't get any Chapman vibes.
So glad I could see the video here in Georgia.....

Next year I'm visiting a cousin in Port Townsend..... perhaps we can work a visit to the Light House into the trip!

Thanks for sharing.
Oh, he meant it as a compliment!

Here's the drunken sailors story: on a dark and stormy night in 1897, Captain Ed Simms of the Enterprise was scouring Port Townsend, Wash. for a crew to sail a boatload of lumber to Alaska.  All he could find were drunks hanging around taverns and liquor stores (all able bodied men were already in Alaska for the gold rush).  The load was too heavy and the sailors were drunk and fighting. The rudder snapped in the waves of Haro Strait near Turn Point Lighthouse.  Lighthouse keeper Ed Durgan and assistant keeper Peter Christiansen rushed in and saved the boat and its crew.  One of the sailors brandished a knife and then bit Captain Simms through the hand. Once disarmed, he was straitjacketed and locked in a henhouse. The rest of the crew were secured in local farmhouses.

It was due to his bravery in rescuing the crew of the Enterprise that Peter Christiansen was awarded the plum position of head lighthouse keeper at Mukilteo when the lighthouse opened in 1906.  He lit the light for the first time on March 1, 1906 and stayed for nineteen years as its keeper.
Margaret! What a great storyteller (stabbed in the hand!). Now that people in our worldwide community have seen this interview, you are world famous!
Alas, not in Spain (for SJ Baty) or elsewhere in Europe (for Jelena Eckstadt).  But fear not; the Historical Society has asked permission for the video to be on the website permanently at www.mukilteohistorical.org.  Check that space in future to see if it can be accessed from there.
Margaret! This was wonderful! And what a great storyteller you are.

A week seems like an eternity because I have some amazing stories to share with everyone. First off, I have two awesome blogs for you to read for #52Ancestors.

Week 40 was about Harvest: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2019/09/52-ancestors-week-40-harvest.html

Couldn't really do anything decent. I felt like I winged it that week.

I'm more proud of Week 41: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2019/10/52-ancestors-week-41-context.html

I talked about the historical context about why two French-Canadian families would be living together in the 1880 census and came up with logical solutions. It was a bit deeper and heavier than I'd have liked. But, it works. Plus it has resonance with today's world. So....let's make sure history doesn't repeat itself, okay? Great!

Aside from the two blogs, my mom did some cleaning and found a metal box down in the basement. Inside was a bunch of my grandfather Marco's and his father's stuff. Mostly wills and back statements. There was also something else. Apparently, in the 1960s Vincenzo sent for his mother's birth certificate in San Pietro a Maida. No idea why. But, the document was there and had her as born in August of 1870. I smiled and spent a while updating all of the things.

There was also a copy of his original Naturalization paper and a few other things. Very cool stuff. I scanned both documents. I may put them on Wikitree. I just haven't had the time.

I also got a new DNA match in the form of my second cousin. I knew about him. So, it wasn't a huge surprise. I told him his DNA test was done. He was like "Oh. Cool." We did share trees and I did help him out. We talk on Facebook. It wasn't too big a deal.

I will say this. I posted the scan of the birth record in Genealogy Squad, aka Blaine Bettinger's second genealogy group. My notifications went through the roof! Still are! I don't mind. Glad people liked it. Glad I found it, too because for the longest time I had Caterina Coppola born on in 1872. She was actually born on August 28th, 1870. So I was off by two years!

On the non genealogy front, I've got a bit of an eye issue today. Just got back from the eye doctor. I seemed to have scratched the cornea of my left eye somehow. I have ointment. No patch.

Dammit. I wanted to be Nick Fury for Halloween.

by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (757k points)
I feel your inner pirate coming out ...
LOL. I did like the Monkey Island games. =) Those were full of piratey goodness.
Go for it!  Who says you need a doctor's permission to wear a patch?  (And I hope the scratch heals quickly... I bruised my cornea once when I opened my eyes just as my kitten pounced on my face.  That eye was light sensitive for months after that.)
Thanks, Lis! :) and thanks for showing up in the genealogy squad thread!
Oh my, Chris, I know your pain. Been there, done that, and not happy about it.

Excellent job on both blogs. You're a natural.
Yeah. I dunno how I scratched it. I'm taking ointment that has been a big help. Gives me stomach issues, though, because of the steroid in it. Don't do drugs, kids.

The eye's doing better today. Not AS red. Still need to take it. And drink warm milk to counter the effects of the medicine.

Thanks for the compliments, man. I still like Week 41 more than week 40. Next week is "Adventure".

And it's week 42. I told Amy ahead of time to expect "Hitchhiker's Guide to Genealogy". =)

Good evening, hello

on the personal front it was 2 relatively quiet weeks. I watched a lot of Athletics World Champs. Was sometimes even funny, because every time the German team doctor was on TV or in a video, mum could say: "Hi Doc!". It is the guy who did her surgery. So when he returned from Qatar, mum had her appointment with him yesterday. She had some questions because she still cannot actively move her surged upper arm up.... Doc told her to make a date at a neurologist, because from the orthopedic point of view she should be able to get her arm up at least to shoulder level. Her biceps and triceps are also able to work, so somehow the communication line must have problems...

The source-a-thon was ok for me results-wise, I was able to kick out some German unsourced profiles. The interesting thing was that the availability of resources was very different in the regions. So eventually I scanned the list for regions (they mostly didn't have to be inserted in the profile for me to know them) and focused mostly on Württemberg, Palatine (which was Bavaria at the beginning of the 1800s) and the region near the Dutch border. There I had the most success with finding records.

On the personal genealogy front I'm currently practicing my ability to read old German script. Two weeks ago on Sunday morning I found a mail of a not-logged-in-in-Wikitree person pointing me to a not-indexed microfilm on FamilySearch which is kind of a census of the Eckstädt-town somewhen in the 1860s I think. BUT the dates are processed also later, because they have death dates of the persons up to the 1910s (that's the latest I saw til now at least). What a goldmine it is for my Eckstädt-profiles here. I could already connect one little branch to a different branch. Of this bigger branch I know where it ultimately belongs to, they descend from a different son of my ancestor who was born in 1683. I have that connection on MyHeritage, have contact there to a cousin who descends from him, but I cannot source it to Wikitree standards yet. I will be busy with those files for some time longer now. But it's so nice to be able to kick out with sources some of the "about"-dates.

Have a great weekend everybody!

It is nice when you stumble across helpful material!  And you'll become so skilled at reading old German script.  Enjoy your weekend Jelena
Jelena, I felt sorry for you, the only member of your team. But you really did a great job all by yourself.

Cool on the new material. I hope it can add a lot to the profiles you have.

Had an interesting week with various friends as I turned 25 on Thursday. That has been a nice distraction from the project aspect of my degree (46 hours left to be completed over the next 3 weeks)

Made a discovery through my Danish ancestry last night. I had known that my 2nd great grandfather and his family had fled and were displaced due to the Second Schleswig War, but what I didn't know was that my 4th great grandfather (his grandfather) had fought in the Napoleonic Wars (wounded in action) and had received the St Helena Medal, and additionally had tried to file an application for the Dannebrog Cross however the backing certificate of commendation got lost.

Oh and one last thing: Friday 20 years ago, filming began on a project which would later become the success known as the Fellowship of the Ring

Happy birthday, Richard!  A Danish discovery is a fine way to celebrate.
20 years?  No way... wow.  I'll keep that in mind in a few months; we'll be visiting New Zealand and have managed to fit in WETA and Hobbiton tours.
Very excellent discovery in your Danish lines, Richard! A birthday gift to yourself.

Happy 25th!

Howdy,

On the genealogy front. Instead of trying to add branches to my tree. I am slowly going through and trying to fix some errors on family members I already added, as well as find better sources for some of them.

On the home front. Another 50he work week. This weekend, I am taking my 9yr old daughter, my 7yr old son, and my wife to a berry farm. One of those pumpkin patch places. The company I work for gives us free tickets to the berry farm. As well as a bonfire and food. It's the company  Family Fall Night.

The weather has been wet, cold, and windy all week.

Unfortunately, I have nothing fun or exciting to report. The good news is, I have nothing bad to report either.
by Paul Kreutz G2G6 Pilot (129k points)
Enjoy your weekend Paul!  That bonfire sounds like a good idea.  Improving the profiles of your ancestors is also a fine plan, in my book.
Doing much the same as you, repairing old profiles. I have been able to add quite a few cousins of those I was working on. Hope your trip to the berry farm is as fun as it sounds.
Today has been a very lazy day. I might have to get out my guitar and play around with my recording gear. The berry farm trip tomorrow should be fun. A lot of the people I work with don't know much about my non work life. I mainly am just going to watch my kids have fun. Since I work a lot. I don't always get the time to take them to cool places. Im planning on taking them to a park that has a wild animal safari in the spring. It's about 20 miles or so east of Lincoln, Ne. I took them to the nature center a couple months ago. I love showing them the non digital world. I think tomorrow will be their first bonfire.

Berry Farm Update.

We got there around 3. My kids had a blast. They went to several playground areas. We went in a corn maze. My wife made a dorky video with shaky camera trickery and all. Rode a train. Did a hay ride. My kids got to climb on tractors. We went to our company campfire. We are hotdogs, made amores. They played in yet another cool playground. All in all the Roca Berry Farm was a great place to take my 7 and 9 year old kids. My wife also had to buy a jar of pumpkin butter. This was my best weekend ever. They also had funnel cakes.
It's so nice to hear about families having so much fun together.  Too many kids are stuck in front of tvs or video
games or telephones.  Parents may be too busy, too disinterested, or not have extra money needed for pleasures.
Congratulations to you and your wife for giving your children  good memories for their future.
Ahhh... funnel cake! My wife’s favorite. Glad you had a great time, Paul.

Hi everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving to Canada and Canadians!!

The Kiwi crew did well in the source-a-thon. We managed to finish in the top 10 out of some 28 teams so we did good.

I offered to make a Digital Scrapbook page as a prize, and the last hangout when it was randomly handed out as a prize, I was watching Mags, Eowyn and Julie all saying that they had no idea what scrapbooking was, let alone digital scrapping.

So I thought you all might like to see the page I made. It was won by Mindy Silva (Silva-1055) and she sent me a couple of photos of her new baby grandnephew. She wanted him on a page along with her grandparents who have passed.

So the below link, shows you what I came up and I am very pleased with how it turned out. I am by no means an expert. I have only been doing this since February 2019, but I do enjoy it as a means of creating art. Don't forget to scroll down to see the page. You can't miss it. It is BLUE!!!

I would be interested to know what everyone thinks of this page!!

PS Manitoba and western Ontario will be suffering a snow storm this weekend, and the temps here in eastern Ontario are already dropping.

Also also, Canada has Thanksgiving this weekend, AND an election - BOTH on Monday!!!!
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
This pic of José with Mindy's grandparents looks great. Well done, Robynne.
Happy Thanksgiving Robynne!

I love the scrapbook page, and I think its a wonderful memorial to pass down to future generations.

If you're voting this Monday, then I think you might be travelling on the 21st?  I hope its somewhere warm.  Safe travels.
Robynne, funny how in the Chat we can track the cold weather as it slowly makes its way south. So, this is a harbinger of the clothes switch, from summer to winter things. I'll be fine, but the wife sure won't! (All those years in Mexico City ingrained a love of warm weather into her.)
