The longest birth name I have ever encountered!

I was strolling through Nice, France birth records hoping to get really lucky and find the yet to be found, elusive birth record of someone (we've all been there, right?) and came across the longest name I have yet to encounter!

Joseph Marie Lie Jules Csar Ignace Louis Antoine Melchior Boselle

born 1862.

My first thought was, poor guy! But then I thought, if he doesn't like his first name, he has plenty of others to choose from!

Well! Can you top that?

Was he part of the nobility?  I don't know about the French, but the German nobility around that time period seemed to love assigning whole collections of names to their children.

Like this one.

Apparently they got extra points for using the name Nepomuk.

I don't think he was noble. But, I believe you win the longest name competition :-)

I used to peruse Wikipedia articles about noble and royal families (this was BEFORE I joined WikiTree and had spare time in my life). Some royal names... seven, eight names? And Diana had a problem at the wedding with Charles' four names!

FWIW, we gave our daughters several names like that, and for the reason to get them a choice when they got older.  My youngest has five names; grew up with Amber (I still call her Am!), but when she got her first job, and since, to the rest of the world she is Rebecca or "Becca" which was her first name on the BCert.  (also, we couldn't make up our minds and we SURE weren't giving the girls a recycled family given name from either side!)

That's awesome, Art! smiley

How about Franz Joseph Otto Robert Maria Anton Karl Max Heinrich Sixtus Xaver Felix Renatus Ludwig Gaetan Pius Ignatius, now known as Otto Habsburg-Lothringen.

That's great, but he doesn't have a Nepomuk ;-)

But 17 forenames is 3 more than, therefore longer, than 14 forenames (the Wettin-125 as posted earlier by Erik Oosterwal). cheeky

That is pretty impressive, Helmut! I do agree that Wettin-125 gets bonus points for Nepomuk ;-)

Hello Emma!

Remember Pablo Picasso?

There is a WikiTree profile for him. His full name at birth was:

Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad

What? I had no idea! Wow! Imagine trying to sign all that on a painting!laugh

Hello Emma,

By accident, I have just came across this 1795 Mexico City christening record (the one at the top of the page at the right hand side in the image):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-61N1-X3

Maria de la Merced Francisca de Asis Magdalena Antonia Ramona Francisca de Paula Juana Baptista Josefa Felipa de Jesus Joachina Augustina Catalina Rafaela Vicenta !!

That is incredibly spectacular!

So much that I decided to add a profile for her, Emma.

By the way, she was the daughter of a Count (the fifth one). I found out that she inherited the nobility title after the death of her brother José Joaquín, the Sixth Count.

Oh, wow! That is impressive :-)

And I love titles that can be passed down through the females of the line. The dynamics of that in the historical time period is so interesting.

The British woman Dawn McManus had her name changed to draw attention to the charity organization she set up after the death of her son. She now has 160 names.

Record number in Dutch civil register, 21 names (not counting "di"):

Jhesu Immacolato Cuore di Maria Johannes Bernardus Carolus Magnus Augustus Aegidius Jacobus Exuperius Hermes Marcus Nicola Eric Etienne Genevieve Mars Castor Casimir HELICZER, born 1977.

Thanks Emma, but unfortunately I have no primary sources to cite (privacy legislation) so it's a maybe...
