Hi Susan,

I'll take the congrats just in view of the fact that I am still breathing! Actually, I miswrote a bit. I completed my 7-week Boston University genealogy principles course. The 7th session as all about DNA. There was so much reading and Discussion, it was like 7 weeks work of work alone just in this DNA module. I just finished the exam for this module and it took me nearly 8 hour! So, I am done with this course.

Meanwhile, I am taking a genetic genealogy course through our local genealogical society. We are using the same book (Bettinger and Parker Wayne's Genetic Genealogy in Practice). The course meets monthly through April. Our first class was October 5th. I will miss our 2nd class because I will be in Mexico teaching, but will be present for all others.

I actually learned a great deal about DNA in this 'cram week'. Now I'm celebrating by catching up on ironing while watching Poldark.

Good morning everyone, yes Friday is here again.

Fall is in full swing here in Central Pennsylvania. We had a touch of frost one morning. That coupled with some brisk winds from the west have the leaves coming down. Time to put the bagger on my mower.

I had two very nice experiences on Wikitree this week. First I was able to complete one of my goals for this year. I created a cemetery category at the city/county/state level, and started populating it. Natalie Trott gets the credit for teaching me how to do this. It was a cemetery where our family has 6 generations currently buried, and no doubt more to come.

Second, I created a husband for a 3^rd cousin from Indiana. Since I had the sources, I created a profile for the father of the husband, who was from the Netherlands. Jan Terink noticed the profile, and was able to add some Dutch sourcing for this father. What a great experience.

Hope everyone gets out and enjoys the fall weather with family and friends. Before we know it, the snow will be flying here in the Northern tier.

National Chocolate Cupcake Day on October 18th annually celebrates the sweetness of small chocolate cakes. With a dollop of frosting, one sweet serving satisfying chocolate and dessert lovers!

Cupcakes have also been known to be called:

Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796 when a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” was written in American Cookery, by Amelia Simmons. The earliest known documentation of the term cupcake was in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts cookbook.

Bakers initially baked their cupcakes in heavy pottery cups. Today, some still use individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large teacups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes.

Chocolate cupcakes come in a variety of flavors, too. Of course, there’s always the standard chocolate cupcake. But why stop there on a holiday?

It has been a week of changes here. It got cold and we have had frost on the cars most mornings. The "puppy" got fixed on Tuesday and he is still not back to normal for his activities yet, he is not little anymore he weighed in at 55 pounds. We went to the grand opening of a Goodwill store in Chardon yesterday and I bought another 35 mm camera, a SLR with a 50mm lens for only $8, and yes it works. I did manage to get my watchlist under 4700 but still have a long way to go but I also managed to reduce my suggestion list a bit and do some sourcing as well. It is going slow but moving in the right direction.

Happy Friday to All!

Home Life: It's been a rather busy week here in beautiful southeastern Arizona. My snowbird friends have arrived here from Tennessee. They love to play a game they call “Dirty Board” (also known as Pegs and Jokers), and we get together to play three times a week in the clubhouse at their RV park. In a few ways, the game is similar to the Sorry board game that I played as a kid. Almost everyone who has learned the game, has gotten their own peg board – many of these crafted by themselves. The game can be played with 4 to 8 players. We've had as many as three tables of 8 players playing during the winter months.

I typed up and emailed my Friends of the Library minutes from last Friday's meeting (the earliest I've done this in months!). On Wednesday, I attended a liaison meeting for the county library. This is held every six months and allows the library directors and friends groups to announce what has happened and what's being planned for the future. It's a wonderful way to share ideas. Every year in December, my group holds a Polar Express event. We put up model trains in the children's room. Our president crafted a small railroad crossing sign which lights up and it's placed outside the library door. We decorate the library and put a “track” on the carpet to guide them to the reading area. We also provide small gift bags, a book, hot cocoa and cookies to each child. They come dressed in pajamas, and listen while the Polar Express book is read to them. Then Santa arrives and passes out the gift bags and a book. Another library is planning a similar event this holiday season.

Last night a Senior Game Night was held at the center. It was the first one since the senior center reopened. It was a success as many came out and enjoyed themselves. Many played dominoes. I played cribbage with a close friend who wanted to relearn the game.

I must admit that I'm a horrible mother and totally forgot to call my son to wish him Happy Birthday yesterday! Thank goodness I had the foresight to make arrangements with my daughter (two weeks ago) to take him to Edwardo's for deep dish spinach pizza. His favorite! My phone rang as I was playing cards. I immediately knew it was my son calling. Doh!

Writing: I drafted an author's note. I'm still waiting for my beta readers to finish and give me their comments. I also sent my first 10 chapters to my writing critique group. They'll begin their review of my novel next month.

WikiTree: I've been working on the BioBuilders colors challenge for my White family tree. I haven't accomplished much this week. I fell down a rabbit hole trying to find Irish sources for birth and marriage records. I fell down a different hole trying to find immigration records. I had hoped this family had come to the USA in one large group, but this does not appear to be the case. I will have more time to work on it this week (I hope!). Don't you hate it when your puzzle pieces just won't fit??!

Been a while since I wrote here!

Any day now, within the next month, I'll be giving birth. It's just a waiting game at this point. Hoping for a Halloween birth, but I'll take whenever my little one is ready to greet the world, so long as they're healthy.

In typical genealogy news, I've made no progress in solving the mystery of the USA York families and their connections, and whether or not my own York ancestors came from Dutch or English ancestry. (I think the English, personally, but I'm not committed to that -- I'll be happy with any answer.)

This has been a difficult week! Still missing my lovely cat, Thai! It was his third bout of cancer and we couldn’t put him through any more.

I went to the grocery store and the car wouldn’t start, so had to walk home loaded with groceries. Fortunately, it just needed a new battery, but it failed it’s MOT, so further repairs.

On the plus side, I have been making good progress with my efforts to record my 21,000 ancestors on WikiTree, discovered new information as I sought out reference sources and linked at least 50 Find a Grave memorials to their parents, or spouses. I also learned another way of recording sources, which I adopted as I was adding to a profile already created and felt it was important to be consistent with the format the profile manager had adopted.

My other half is off to Dorset to the Tank Museum this weekend, so I hope to add lots more ancestors to my tree, while he is away. I know I could have uploaded GEDcom files, but have improved my research enormously by going through my research again.

And I found errors on FamilySearch where the 1926 Prairie census records had been mislabelled with a location in Ontario. Checked the government provided source and reported the issue to FamilySearch.

Hails and horns, Wikipeeps!

How is everyone? On the genealogy front, my blog this week was about adventure: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2019/10/52-ancestors-week-42-adventure.html

I also made Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references because I simply had to. I am contractually obligated to make that reference whenever the number 42 pops up. I did it for the 42nd episode of my webshow where I reviewed the Captain America comic where he said "Hail Hydra". That was a....special time in comics' history.

I checked out my mother's Thrulines for Jean-Baptiste Bibeau and Therese Laroche. I was curious to see how many matches descend from them. I knew of a couple. Like a handful. Turns out my mom has 80 cousins total from just this one couple. That's amazing. I knew it was possible. But, it's still cool to see.

On the non genealogy front, my eye seems to be better. I really didn't like that medicine they gave me. But, it worked. Less bloody and that's good! My nephews thought it was cool, though. Then again they are six and nine. They think everything gross is cool!

Leaves are turning here. House sparrows still mob my feeders, but I get some others too. I got a photo of a starling in his fall colors, very striking.

We have our assignments to work early voting, first time here. It will be interesting.

I created a list of all the things a person could do to help create natural areas, and reduce carbon footprint. It makes me feel better. I suggested the list to the local Sierra Club as a survey and it could generate an article in their newsletter.

I championed treating Ancestor Thrulines like they did DNA circles. Forget trying to prove etc. just document. I have 31 cousins going back to one ancestor through about 6 different children I also saw the beta at 23 and me where they listed cousins and had me identify the nodes. I tried to get back there to check on some of the cousins and I didn't see it. Seems to be invitation only. There is one other cousin who put a family search tree on 23 and me. Couldn't find our common ancestor.

Happy weekend, everyone! The weather here is starting to move from crisp to chilly. So of course our boiler chose this week to misbehave. Apparently a sensor started going bad, so we only had hot water when it felt like it. Sensor was replaced today and all is well, but it meant I had to spend some time at home waiting for the repair guy three different days this week. I put the time to good use, though... I'm back to another brick wall, Elizabeth Savage, and thanks to some wonderful collaborators here I'm starting to see some cracks in the wall. (Big shout out and thanks to Betty Fox, Amanda Tomas, and Herb Tardy!) We've connected her to another brother, and have found a likely father for all of them but need better documentation. (Data "consistent with" doesn't mean "proves.") Now, though, off to work for some research meetings and critter care.

Currently, it's 8˚ C and cloudy in Fort Erie, heading for a predicted high of 10˚ C, and a predicted low tonight of 4˚ C. The light of my life and the delight of my eyes is busily taping plastic over the windows (our windows leak drafts like crazy, even when they're locked, but our landlord won't replace them) and putting up the thermal curtains, to try to keep our gas bill from going through the roof.

An article that came up in my RSS feeds about "things you should replace right away". Reading through it, one of the things that it said to replace was your old fire extinguisher. I immediately thought, "Oh, yeah. We should probably have a fire extinguisher, shouldn't we?" Fortunately, there were some ABC extinguishers on sale, so I bought two, and mounted one by the back door and one by the front door.

On the genealogy side, after working up a spreadsheet for the Welch Name Study, based on the one I created for the Slade Name Study (those spreadsheets are how I generate those charts), the thought occurred to me that I should do up a spreadsheet for my poor, neglected, French Name Study. So far, I've made it through the Frenches on Wikipedia, and I'm working through the Frenches on ThePeerage.com. (So far, I'm up to the "L"s.) I am also starting in on trying to source unsourced Frenches and Welches. (I've already sourced all the unsourced Slades that I could.)

Pip, your comment about Juliet helping you with your Smith line gives me an idea, which I might just post to the Methodically Scattershot thread: one way to do things a little more methodically is to figure out which of my ancestral lines hits a brick wall first. (Or, to be more chronological about it, starts last.) My youngest end-of-line ancestor is Margaret (Crozier) Waddell, so perhaps I should see what I can do about adding more sources and pushing her line back at least one more generation, and then do the same with my next-youngest end-of-line ancestor.

Maybe the truck was giving you hints to put river rock in the road "nonconstruction" holes so it had an easier trip. I have never been stuck with a nonstarter but know it has to be frustrating.
I found two local teenage brothers who worked well together on a cleaning out project for me. Sometimes siblings bicker among themselves but they didn't. Have their card on my fridge and am passing on recommendations for them to all of my widowed friends that are always in need of this type of help.
National chocolate cupcakes is right down my alley. Peanut or chocolate frosting is a tossup, maybe some of each. Time to turn on the oven!

Hello WikiKin!

I hope that everyone has had a good week. I'm surprised (as always) to learn that it is Friday by seeing this thread.

On the homefront, the 2nd child (13 months) made his first sentence and has picked up a lot of new words this week. It is always amazing to watch them grown and evolve.

On the genealogy front, I've been developing some profiles for the bio builders challenge. I just now made a matching monogram for a background photo. I wrote about it here:

During the week I happened to be reading about the My Lai Massacre during the Vietnam War and I realized that the hero of the story, Major Hugh Thompson Jr. didn't yet have a WikiTree profile so I created one for him.

Aside from that, a lot of busy project work and similar tasks.

The weather has turned slightly fallish; the water temp dropped from 25 to 24.5 (77F to 75F), still quite comfortable to swim but with the cooler air temps, it makes sense to dry off quickly.

Since my ancestor audit some months ago, I've been slowly nibbling away at developing 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th great-grandparent's profiles. Some have come along nicely and some have a way to go.

Looking forward to reading everyone's replies.

Edit to add:

I almost completely forgot that I had made huge progress on some society applications. I had previously applied to Sons of the Revolution (NSSAR), Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW_, and the Military Order of Foreign Wars of the United States (MOFW). All three needed this or that paperwork (since a year ago!) and with the new kid I sort of let it lapse.

In the last week I dug up docs & ordered a few more and sent them in. SUVCW and MOFW appear approved and I'm just waiting on final notice. NSSAR is complete except we're waiting on great-grandmother's death certificate - I ordered it last week and it should be here in 2 more weeks.

And so I hope to have some good news on those in the coming weeks.

Greetings and Salutations, WikiTreers!

It's been a few weeks - last time on the Weekend Chat was before the Source-A-Thon so several items to note.

As I mentioned to Wendy above, we had to put our final pet to sleep, an ornery little cat named Maisy who had survived all the others, but around the age of 20 just couldn't go any further. It's hard when your little kitty becomes an old kitty, and can't stand for long, stops eating, and just looks miserable and while it might be the best thing for them, I can't help but feel a bit selfish that I want one more day, then one more day... and so on. At least it was a few weeks back, but as I said to Wendy, I'm still going through the paces of walking around the house and still thinking I'll see her, when the truth is I know she's gone. We're considering a short vacation in the near future, so it would be irresponsible to get a new cat before that, so for the moment, I'm cat-less and pet-less. We'll see if that changes.

I've been spending a bit more time at the church lately - just so many things to do and not nearly enough time to do them. I have been known to suffer from the disease of heavy volunteerism, so I always need to counter that with an ounce of common sense. My wife seems to provide that for me from time to time, and I'm so glad that she does. It's good that we balance each other a bit - not a perfect fit, but perfect enough.

On the Genealogy Front, I've been trying to wrap up several Notables and actually connected 3 this week and if I have time I have a 4th one. Currently working on Alan Zaslove who recently passed away earlier in October. I really thought connecting a 2nd generation immigrant from Russia was a long-shot, but fortunately someone he married also married a "Ford", and that's a good name to connect. So I've got a few profiles to build and validate, but it should work out.

Anyway, after a busy week and a busy weekend ahead, I'm looking forward to one that will soon be either less busy or at least has some quiet moments between. Not sure that's going to happen, but I can always hope and pray.

Hiya Pip, Thanks for hosting! Not a whole lot new here in Kentucky. We're missing the new grandson pretty bad and would love a trip to Nevada but just can't go right now. The kitchen is half put back together so at least I can cook now. Had some problems with the cabinet order and the electrical isn't all done yet (the hubby got sick).

Staying busy as always in the Wiki-world. Gained a few new members this week so that is always exciting. I actually spent a lot of time trying to connect a profile to the global tree. Most of the families came from Russia/Poland and didn't have many descendants here. Good news is profiles are added for those regions. Bad news is they aren't connected to the Global tree yet. Hats off to the Connectors!!! I don't know how they do it lol. I've gone up, down and sideways and I'm still adding. I'll get there at some point.

I haven't kept count but it is way more than I had expected lol. Tips for the kitchen remodel:

Give yourself extra time so expectations aren't dashed by late arrivals,
Check your list carefully if items are delivered (I did by the way, and had to explain to the drivers that they were wrong about what some of the pieces were),
Don't bury anything in a box thinking "That won't be there long, I won't need it for a week or so" ... label the box like you are moving and prepare yourself for the possibility that you may need it before then,
Make friends with fast food, salads, take out, your crockpot or a hot plate lol. That stove or refrigerator won't do you much good if the floor is tore up or the counters aren't installed.
Make a list of possible plumbing or electrical changes you may want. It's easier to have it done when the kitchen is tore apart (or when they find something wrong after the kitchen is tore apart). Hey, I got extra outlets out of this one! Joy is me!

It's raining here on the Pacific Wet Coast, which is typical this time of year.

Yes, I did meet a new cousin, which was very cool. She's helping me figure out her side of the family tree.

Two of my bands are playing Saturday night, back to back at the same pub. I really should be practicing for that rather than hanging out on-line!

Suggestions for improvement? I have one. When I go to my "Unsourced" page, and view my unsourced profiles, the page displays the number of profiles I need to have sourced. Currently I am at 22. Higher than I like, but not unmanageable. When I go to my "Unconnected" page, I get my list of Unconnected Profiles on my Watchlist. There is a list of profiles, but no number displayed. It would be nice to have a number on display, so as I work through the list, I can monitor my progress. It's just a small suggestion, but it would be helpful.

I thought before I go to my mom's to help her that I will update you all on how my dad is during this week. My mom says that he has improved a lot. He eats all he can but has quit eating deserts except for some cookies we take to him.

He now can get up out of a chair or his bed or even get in the chair and bed by himself without any help at all. But he doesn't can any weight his legs or very thin. In wheelchair he walks with his leg and can go so fast we can't keep up with him. Even the sitter he had on Sunday said she couldn't keep up with him. Will I will be going to my mother I will let you know how he is doing tomorrow and Sunday also.

Hello Wikitreers! First time in this chat.

It has been an exhausting week, despite a national holiday on Monday. My blood pressure dropped suddenly at work on Tuesday, and my boss called the emergency- i was ok thanks God, just really low pressure and a bit of a slow pulse, but after that i have felt really tired all week.

The doctor said its maybe just stress and exhaustion, im a teacher/professor and the academic year is about to end, maybe i just need vacations.

Everything i did this week got unexpected complications, since a medical appointment that took me months to arrange being cancelled, to a charity event im helping with and im having trouble finding the time to finish tasks.

Only good thing is that today the sun was shining after a week of rainstorms non stop. Finally the temperature is warm and spring seems to be in full swing at last.

Im really looking forward to my summer vacations in January. Still havent booked anything though, my husband is a bit complicated at work atm so not sure about the dates.

I love reading through what everyone is doing each week. The variety of interests, the amazing knowledge, and friendliness of those who frequent this each weekend keeps me going. Welcome to the newer members and glad to see you are back to those returning after a while off. And of course good to connect again with our loyal posters who show up week after week. Sending cyber hugs to you all!

Well things are winding down on selling my aunt's house. The last 2 pieces of work are being completed. We are set to close next week. The couple who are buying it are thrilled. They looked at 20+ houses before they saw this one and put a contract in on it. The house has been in my family since the 1930s. So this is bittersweet for me. I grew up there for the first 6 years of my life. So I have fond early childhood memories. I have not really had the time to morn my aunt. Being the person in charge of discharging her estate I spent my focus on getting things done that needed to be done for the inheritors (me and my two sons but my focus has been to help my sons who both have had a lot of medical bills in their young adult lives). So soon I can pack away all the boxes, papers, etc into the basement to be retained for 7 years. Because I grew up in that house with my grandparents, my great aunt, my aunt, and my parents, I have a lot of things I have kept or gifted to family, friends, and have made copious donations to charities. So this chapter of a house that was a home for so many over the years is coming to a close.

On the health side my son is out of the hospital now for about a week. They were able to give him chemo while he was in it which is good because we know it was working. The side effects are really debilitating. He has lost over 50 pounds in a coupe of weeks and just really looks tired. He is doing what he can to hold it all together but you can see it is tough. He was so excited to see his young son who is on the verge of turning 1 in a few weeks stand and take a few steps without holding on. It won't be long and we will be running after him.

My other son's family have been dealing with a host of medical annoyances. Things like allergies, food sensitivities, bruises from running into a pole (see the red eye post above on Chris's thread).

Ron and I just keep plugging along.

I am going to have a busy weekend again as we have final furniture to move, some fun family time to spend, and some time to sleep! As you can see... that is eluding me still tonight.

On the genealogy front I sourced a bunch of adopted Burtin profiles. Cleaned up all suggestions but 2 and have been jumping in and out of various project duties I have.

Not related to WT, Yahoo Groups is shutting down its data storage of files, photos, etc. This is affecting a ton of Yahoo Genealogy Groups several of which I admin, co-moderate, am an officer for or on the board for... I spent the last two days downing files. I have more to still do...

Good morning from good ol' Europe,

On the home front mum tried to get a neurologist appointment. One said "we still don't have the calendars for 2020, when we get them you can get a date." The other said: "No way you can get a soon appointment." Oh well, in the end she will have to call the call center that will make a "quick" appointment. Even that can need "up to 4 weeks" to get it, no matter if the docs say she needs an appointment urgently.... (where is the *rolleyes* smiley when you need it?)

On the genealogy/wikitree-front I looked through the unindexed microfilm and found some more dates, names and also fates. I found a brother of my 2xgreatgrandfather I didn't know about and in the column "Remarks" there was something written I had difficulties to read... "This is what?? Wait... is that....?" I make a screenshot to make the picture even bigger than what is possible on FamSearch, because the paper is getting dark on that end... Yep, eventually I got it. My 2xgreatgranduncle had drowned in the river...
