"I don't have a lot of faith in forecasts about the weather"

Susan, if you knew how often they were wrong in our area, you'd never trust them again!

laugh Pip if you live in a mountainous area, or are within a valley, it's going to be difficult to predict ... the mountains, whether you name them "high" or "low" interfere with storms

In the Sierra's the storms crossing them were torn apart by the Sierra's is how it was explained to us ... Washington for instance had something 40 inches annual of rain average -- because those storms were torn apart, Nevada got annual average of 7 inches -- while we lived there it dropped to 5 inches

Nevada is colored in tones and shades of brown; compared to NorCal which is GREEN ... SoCal is tending toward brown, I will say that ... it is more arid than NorCal ...

Yep, in a valley in the mountains.
$500 for a fuel pump and labor? Did they use lube? I'm going to put up a sign in my yard. At that rate, I could do 3 or 4 of those a week and make a decent living.
Hi Pipster,

If you have any river rock left over, bring it to my place! That would be Tucson (in AZ)! Thanks! The Hipster
Greetings Wikikin from Tucson, AZ. It's a balmy 85 degrees and dry with a subtle breeze.

I have my final session for the genetic genealogy course and it's on DNA. I need to review an online paper about DNA, then complete a quiz and I am done so won't have much time this weekend.

Once done, I promised to do biographies on a few 'color' names (e.g., Grey, Green, Brown).

So, I hope all of you have a really splended, happy and safe weekend.

laugh Congrats. Then my next thought was "Wow, she's become a Valuable Resource for information on DNA !!" and my next thought was "I doubt she wants to hear THAT !!" and then I thought "Well, Information is King, and she has it." or so it is said. And then I decided to leave it Congrats, after all Carol's done something many others have not. More kudos and less greed is what is called for here, Bunny Brain (me talking to me). LOL

CONGRATS, CAROL !!

Hi Susan,

I'll take the congrats just in view of the fact that I am still breathing! Actually, I miswrote a bit. I completed my 7-week Boston University genealogy principles course. The 7th session as all about DNA. There was so much reading and Discussion, it was like 7 weeks work of work alone just in this DNA module. I just finished the exam for this module and it took me nearly 8 hour! So, I am done with this course.

Meanwhile, I am taking a genetic genealogy course through our local genealogical society. We are using the same book (Bettinger and Parker Wayne's Genetic Genealogy in Practice). The course meets monthly through April. Our first class was October 5th. I will miss our 2nd class because I will be in Mexico teaching, but will be present for all others.

I actually learned a great deal about DNA in this 'cram week'. Now I'm celebrating by catching up on ironing while watching Poldark.

laughlaugh Well, got to admire that stamina you have, and the perseverance you have demonstrated and the fact all by itself that you have accomplished, are accomplishing, something not many have. (I'm not going to ask what "Poldark" is, probably TV, and I don't "do" TV -- I read, instead, since -- wow, since 1985.)  (I also don't "do" ironing, haven't done that since 1971. It's wash&wear, or nothing.)

laughCarol, it isn't that I did not enjoy watching TV because for some years I did, 1956 to 1983ff -- and it's when I started KNOWING the plot line in sitcoms and films and within the first 10 minutes of either one ... that's a bummer ... it took away all the Entertainment value from the offering .... I gave up watching.  It was too predictable

There's a text out, "101 Plot Lines" a titile something like that, meant for writers mostly, but no doubt TV and Film script writers use it, they ARE writers. I had read that book several times. Had taken some Creative Writing courses. Think that book is what "cured" me of Film and TV viewing. LOL

Good morning everyone, yes Friday is here again.

Fall is in full swing here in Central Pennsylvania. We had a touch of frost one morning. That coupled with some brisk winds from the west have the leaves coming down. Time to put the bagger on my mower.

I had two very nice experiences on Wikitree this week. First I was able to complete one of my goals for this year. I created a cemetery category at the city/county/state level, and started populating it. Natalie Trott gets the credit for teaching me how to do this. It was a cemetery where our family has 6 generations currently buried, and no doubt more to come.

Second, I created a husband for a 3rd cousin from Indiana. Since I had the sources, I created a profile for the father of the husband, who was from the Netherlands. Jan Terink noticed the profile, and was able to add some Dutch sourcing for this father. What a great experience.

Hope everyone gets out and enjoys the fall weather with family and friends. Before we know it, the snow will be flying here in the Northern tier.

by Rodney Long G2G6 Pilot (869k points)

Hello, Rodney! We had our first frost two days ago. Leaves are tumbling down, but I think I'll wait a little longer to tackle them. (I've learned not to be too gleeful around my wife when the snow falls.)

Congrats on your WikiTree achievements this week!

it's cooled off here in Kentucky too. Congratulations on your cemetery project completion and that Netherlands profile!!
Hello Miss Mindy, thank-you for the comment. Hope all is well with you, and hope you have a great weekend. Travel safe.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Hello Linda, hope all is well with you. Have a great weekend
Jan knows the Dutch sources so well and is nearly always able to find something that corroborates the rest of the sources. He is really a gem for all things Dutch on WikiTree
Hello Jelena, hope all is well with you. Have a good weekend.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE DAY

National Chocolate Cupcake Day on October 18th annually celebrates the sweetness of small chocolate cakes. With a dollop of frosting, one sweet serving satisfying chocolate and dessert lovers!

Cupcakes have also been known to be called:

  • Fairy Cakes
  • Patty Cakes
  • Cup Cakes (different from Cupcakes (one-word))

Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796 when a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” was written in American Cookery, by Amelia Simmons. The earliest known documentation of the term cupcake was in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts cookbook.

Bakers initially baked their cupcakes in heavy pottery cups. Today, some still use individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large teacups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes.

Chocolate cupcakes come in a variety of flavors, too. Of course, there’s always the standard chocolate cupcake. But why stop there on a holiday?

  • Chocolate caramel cupcakes satisfy that extra cry for sweetness.
  • Peanut butter chocolate cupcakes are the snackers delight.
  • Get devilishly good cupcakes with Devil’s Food.
  • Cool things off a bit with chocolate mint recipes, too.
  • And you can’t forget chocolate orange cupcakes. Citrus brightens the flavor of any chocolate recipe.

Celebrate by trying one of the following tempting recipes while watching an episode of the Food Network reality-based competition show, Cupcake Wars. Remember to invite friends or family over to share. That’s how we like to #CelebrateEveryDay!

Cream Cheese Chocolate Cupcakes
Chocolate Fudge Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Frosting
Super Easy, Super Moist Chocolate Cupcakes
Chocolate Cream Filled Chocolate Cupcakes
Dark Chocolate Cupcakes

It has been a week of changes here. It got cold and we have had frost on the cars most mornings. The "puppy" got fixed on Tuesday and he is still not back to normal for his activities yet, he is not little anymore he weighed in at 55 pounds. We went to the grand opening of a Goodwill store in Chardon yesterday and I bought another 35 mm camera, a SLR with a 50mm lens for only $8, and yes it works. I did manage to get my watchlist under 4700 but still have a long way to go but I also managed to reduce my suggestion list a bit and do some sourcing as well. It is going slow but moving in the right direction.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Dale, every time I tackle my watch list, I almost immediately add a couple hundred. <sigh> Never-ending.

A 55-pound puppy?!? What will his adult weight be???

Pip, the "puppy" is 9 months old so he will not get too much larger, I hope. We were told he should not get too much over 35 pounds when we got him. We went to the Restore this morning and I got a camera case for $4 and then back to Goodwill where I got a pair of jeans and a flash for the film cameras for $3. For the rest of the day I plan on working on WikiTree, at least until the grandkids invade our house for dinner tonight.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Happy Friday to All!

Home Life: It's been a rather busy week here in beautiful southeastern Arizona. My snowbird friends have arrived here from Tennessee. They love to play a game they call “Dirty Board” (also known as Pegs and Jokers), and we get together to play three times a week in the clubhouse at their RV park. In a few ways, the game is similar to the Sorry board game that I played as a kid. Almost everyone who has learned the game, has gotten their own peg board – many of these crafted by themselves. The game can be played with 4 to 8 players. We've had as many as three tables of 8 players playing during the winter months.

I typed up and emailed my Friends of the Library minutes from last Friday's meeting (the earliest I've done this in months!). On Wednesday, I attended a liaison meeting for the county library. This is held every six months and allows the library directors and friends groups to announce what has happened and what's being planned for the future. It's a wonderful way to share ideas. Every year in December, my group holds a Polar Express event. We put up model trains in the children's room. Our president crafted a small railroad crossing sign which lights up and it's placed outside the library door. We decorate the library and put a “track” on the carpet to guide them to the reading area. We also provide small gift bags, a book, hot cocoa and cookies to each child. They come dressed in pajamas, and listen while the Polar Express book is read to them. Then Santa arrives and passes out the gift bags and a book. Another library is planning a similar event this holiday season.

Last night a Senior Game Night was held at the center. It was the first one since the senior center reopened. It was a success as many came out and enjoyed themselves. Many played dominoes. I played cribbage with a close friend who wanted to relearn the game.

I must admit that I'm a horrible mother crying and totally forgot to call my son to wish him Happy Birthday yesterday! Thank goodness I had the foresight to make arrangements with my daughter (two weeks ago) to take him to Edwardo's for deep dish spinach pizza. His favorite! My phone rang as I was playing cards. I immediately knew it was my son calling. Doh!

Writing: I drafted an author's note. I'm still waiting for my beta readers to finish and give me their comments. I also sent my first 10 chapters to my writing critique group. They'll begin their review of my novel next month.

WikiTree: I've been working on the BioBuilders colors challenge for my White family tree. I haven't accomplished much this week. I fell down a rabbit hole trying to find Irish sources for birth and marriage records. I fell down a different hole trying to find immigration records. I had hoped this family had come to the USA in one large group, but this does not appear to be the case. I will have more time to work on it this week (I hope!). Don't you hate it when your puzzle pieces just won't fit??!

by Diane Hildebrandt G2G6 Pilot (110k points)

HI, Diane! Good to hear from you.

Do you have a target date for publication? I know this is hard to figure as the editing process takes forever, it seems.

My wife relies on me to keep up with birthdays. Comes with being the genealogist! cheeky I've saved her a few times.

I don't have a target date yet, but hope it will be sometime next year. I've heard that it's better for an author to wait to publish until their second book is almost finished. It's been four years since I began. I do have some written for the second book (it's where I originally started lol).

I don't have the $ to go the traditional publishing route, so I plan to self-publish on Kindle. It's a fictionalized family history based upon as many historical facts as I was able to locate. I don't care if my book sells. I just want future Mathews generations to read about our history.

I'm usually so good with birthdays! I'm usually the one to call my children and remind them of someone's birthday. I guess I was too busy playing with friends yesterday. I'm just glad my son wasn't upset with me. He called to say how much he enjoyed his pizza. lol

My phone rang as I was playing cards. I immediately knew it was my son calling. Doh!

Did you play it off?  "Oh, there you are dear, been trying to reach you all day!" cheeky

Ditto to everyone on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

lol SJ! I knew I couldn't pull anything like that - he works from home! He was forgiving as he should have been considering I'd arranged for him to get his favorite pizza. When he was still in the Marines and stationed in Hawaii, he complained every time we spoke about how he missed that pizza. laugh

My daughter loves it too, so was quite willing to arrange the surprise. She texted me today that they ordered not just one but two pizzas. Bet one of those was pesto (her fave!). She drove about 40 miles one way to take him there, so I don't mind paying for two.

Hi Diane, fellow Tree Nut! It's good to hear about what you've been up to :-)

Been a while since I wrote here!

Any day now, within the next month, I'll be giving birth. It's just a waiting game at this point. Hoping for a Halloween birth, but I'll take whenever my little one is ready to greet the world, so long as they're healthy.

In typical genealogy news, I've made no progress in solving the mystery of the USA York families and their connections, and whether or not my own York ancestors came from Dutch or English ancestry. (I think the English, personally, but I'm not committed to that -- I'll be happy with any answer.)
by G. Borrero G2G6 Pilot (125k points)

Congratulations to you, G! You'll have to keep us posted.

"I'll be happy with any answer." I feel this way frequently with several of my lines.

Congrats on your upcoming arrival! The last days always seem the longest as you can't wait for it to be over.

Good luck breaking your York barrier.
Hope it's not on Halloween.  Too many distractions from the usual birthday celebrations.  Congratulations on the expected
baby.  They are such a delight, spoken as a grandmother of six.
Congratulations!  What wonderful news!

This has been a difficult week!  Still missing my lovely cat, Thai!  It was his third bout of cancer and we couldn’t put him through any more.

I went to the grocery store and the car wouldn’t start, so had to walk home loaded with groceries.  Fortunately, it just needed a new battery, but it failed it’s MOT, so further repairs.

On the plus side, I have been making good progress with my efforts to record my 21,000 ancestors on WikiTree, discovered new information as I sought out reference sources and linked at least 50 Find a Grave memorials to their parents, or spouses. I also learned another way of recording sources, which I adopted as I was adding to a profile already created and felt it was important to be consistent with the format the profile manager had adopted.

My other half is off to Dorset to the Tank Museum this weekend, so I hope to add lots more ancestors to my tree, while he is away.  I know I could have uploaded GEDcom files, but have improved my research enormously by going through my research again.

And I found errors on FamilySearch where the 1926 Prairie census records had been mislabelled with a location in Ontario.  Checked the government provided source and reported the issue to FamilySearch.

Here’s to a better week

Wendy

PS it is raining!
by Wendy Taylor G2G6 Pilot (134k points)
HI Wendy! Autos (and trucks) rarely break down in the driveway. They wait until you are somewhere else and say to other vehicles nearby, "Watch this!"

FS errors slow me down as I just cannot let them sit. Adding sources, disconnecting people. You know how they ask for a reason for a change? I put things like: "Silly! Didn't anyone read the death certificate?"
Hi Pip, death certificates should be read carefully.  My 3 x great grandmother’s said she was born in Warwickshire. Imagine my surprise, as she emigrated to Canada in the 1840s, whereas I emigrated to the UK in the 1980s and now live in Warwickshire.  It felt amazing to take a run down the road to Compton Wynyates and to visit the church in Tyson where she was baptised and married my 3 x great grandfather.  Were it not for that little clue on her death certificate, I would still have a brick wall!
Oh, Wendy! My heart goes out to you on the loss of your beloved pet. We also had to put our cat to sleep recently, and even though it's one of a long march of names that will never be forgotten, each one is always a fresh mark on my mind for awhile after it's done. And I know that she's not suffering anymore, so that's a wonderful thing, but the little things like walking down the stairs and turning the corner and for an instant I think I see her - then reality snaps back and I remember. It's going to take a little time to heal from that before it's all said and done.

laughEek. 21,000? Impressive. On your watchlist also?

No, my Watchlist is 911, as I am migrating them slowly and reviewing my research thoroughly.  A few were on WikiTree already.  Goodness knows how long it will take and then I can start all my DNA triangulation

Wendy
Yes, I get lots of moments like that, Scott, but it was just as painful watching him fail.  I think it will be a while before I consider getting another pet.

Wendy
Ah, Wendy, had me boggled, 21,000 and a g2g comment about slow loading once a list hits 5000, and I'm thinking, okay, she'd have maybe a half hour? to get a snack and beverage and ...
Susan, I guess when the time comes I can hand responsibility over to others.  I have been working on my tree for over 20 years.

Wendy

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

I was having repeated mechanical issues with a car once, so I went around to a bunch of car dealerships, and accepted all the brochures they gave me. I left the brochures on the front seat, and lo and behold, the car stopped acting up.
@Pip, see? It is wise to explain to your vehicle what the cost of its misbehavior might well be. Greg has the rights of it, just a "gentle hint" might well bring about the desired reform.
@Wendy, me too, and three computer crashes later I'm hanging five at WT trying to get it all together -- again -- and posted as profiles and THIS TIME if a computer crashes ... it is the pressure to Time and mortality that spurs me onward

Hails and horns, Wikipeeps!

How is everyone? On the genealogy front, my blog this week was about adventure: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2019/10/52-ancestors-week-42-adventure.html

I also made Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references because I simply had to. I am contractually obligated to make that reference whenever the number 42 pops up. I did it for the 42nd episode of my webshow where I reviewed the Captain America comic where he said "Hail Hydra". That was a....special time in comics' history.

I checked out my mother's Thrulines for Jean-Baptiste Bibeau and Therese Laroche.  I was curious to see how many matches descend from them. I knew of a couple. Like a handful. Turns out my mom has 80 cousins total from just this one couple. That's amazing. I knew it was possible. But, it's still cool to see.

On the non genealogy front, my eye seems to be better. I really didn't like that medicine they gave me. But, it worked. Less bloody and that's good! My nephews thought it was cool, though. Then again they are six and nine. They think everything gross is cool!

by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (764k points)

This eye thing has been a slow heal for you, Chris. Medicine I received for the same thing stung like crazy, but I let it do its work.

A superior blog, Chris. I mean superior!  What a find, all this time sitting in a basement. Oh, what joy! This makes me so happy for you (and a little jealous).

Yeah, I just looked at it. It's better. Less red and puffy. Was hoping to get a cybernetic eye. That would have been awesome.

Glad you liked the blog this week. =D I need to get all the stuff together in one spot as everything is kind of scattered.
Ooooo, I want a cybernetic eye!
Hmm....RoboPip sounds awesome.

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Loved your post, Chris!  You're a hoopy frood.  Even without the cybernetic eye.  (Look into getting an extra head, though... you could do genealogy twice as fast!)
Chris I think I shared with you in a direct email that one of my granddaughters ran into a pole and has a bloodshot eye along with bruises.... well she has been telling everyone she has a bloody eye.  Of course it is not bleeding it is blood shot but little ones are so very literal!  So we joked with her about being a zombie for Halloween.  Now it is all subsiding and she is distraught that her body costume is disappearing!  In the blink of an eye (pun is intended) you will be back to normal.

You have done a great job researching and documenting your family.  And as we all know you do know how to turn a phrase.
Cybernetic eyes are only cool if they come with a HUD.  Like in The Terminator
Turn that d upside down and make it a g...
@ Laura: Yeah, you told me that story. =) My eye is less zombified now. Less bloodshot and more normal. I still might go to my regular eye doctor and get it checked out anyway only because I've always had issues with my left eye.

@ Lis, I'm glad you liked the post. =) I like Douglas Adams' work. He did really good episodes of Doctor Who during the Tom Baker years.

@ Paul: That's the plan. =)
Oh no I'm telling the same story more than once.....age...shat a bummer......
Don't worry about it. Sometimes good stories are worth retelling. =)

Leaves are turning here. House sparrows still mob my feeders, but I get some others too. I got a photo of a starling in his fall colors, very striking.

We have our assignments to work early voting, first time here. It will be interesting.

I created a list of all the things a person could do to help create natural areas, and reduce carbon footprint. It makes me feel better. I suggested the list to the local Sierra Club as a survey and it could generate an article in their newsletter.

I championed treating Ancestor Thrulines like they did DNA circles. Forget trying to prove etc. just document. I have 31 cousins going back to one ancestor through about 6 different children I also saw the beta at 23 and me where they listed cousins and had me identify the nodes. I tried to get back there to check on some of the cousins and I didn't see it. Seems to be invitation only. There is one other cousin who put a family search tree on 23 and me. Couldn't find our common ancestor.
by Sue Hall G2G6 Pilot (168k points)
Sue, you've been busy! I love the idea of a list for reducing the carbon footprint. Let us know if they use it.

Happy weekend, everyone!  The weather here is starting to move from crisp to chilly.  So of course our boiler chose this week to misbehave.  Apparently a sensor started going bad, so we only had hot water when it felt like it.  Sensor was replaced today and all is well, but it meant I had to spend some time at home waiting for the repair guy three different days this week.  I put the time to good use, though... I'm back to another brick wall, Elizabeth Savage, and thanks to some wonderful collaborators here I'm starting to see some cracks in the wall.  (Big shout out and thanks to Betty Fox, Amanda Tomas, and Herb Tardy!)  We've connected her to another brother, and have found a likely father for all of them but need better documentation.  (Data "consistent with" doesn't mean "proves.")  Now, though, off to work for some research meetings and critter care.
by Lisa Hazard G2G6 Pilot (264k points)
I saw your post about the Savages in Genealogy Squad. I hope you can solve the puzzle. =) Good luck and good luck with the boiler!!
Thanks!  Yeah, sometimes I post the same question there and here... I always seem to get much better input from G2G folks!  That FB group's so big stuff seems to get buried pretty quickly.
Yeah, it does. That's why I tend to post on both so I can get more than two eyes on things.
It's a Yogi Berra kind of place...
MMhmm. That's why I try to comment on random threads. There are so many people there.

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Lisa, mechanical things plan  on ways to torture us to make us appreciate them more.

So true, Pip!

This brick wall is starting to crumble.  I'm finding more records (land lottery; 1812 muster rolls) that give me circumstantial evidence to support my hypothesis.  And I think I just found what became of Elizabeth's sister Martha.  I have one DNA match who connects the Savage cluster and another cluster that I think is related to Elizabeth's mother.  That DNA match has a "Martha" with no last name in their tree, born in the right place, right time.  Yet another lead to chase.
Must avoid Batman v Superman reference....

Currently, it's 8˚ C and cloudy in Fort Erie, heading for a predicted high of 10˚ C, and a predicted low tonight of 4˚ C. The light of my life and the delight of my eyes is busily taping plastic over the windows (our windows leak drafts like crazy, even when they're locked, but our landlord won't replace them) and putting up the thermal curtains, to try to keep our gas bill from going through the roof.

An article that came up in my RSS feeds about "things you should replace right away". Reading through it, one of the things that it said to replace was your old fire extinguisher. I immediately thought, "Oh, yeah. We should probably have a fire extinguisher, shouldn't we?" Fortunately, there were some ABC extinguishers on sale, so I bought two, and mounted one by the back door and one by the front door.

On the genealogy side, after working up a spreadsheet for the Welch Name Study, based on the one I created for the Slade Name Study (those spreadsheets are how I generate those charts), the thought occurred to me that I should do up a spreadsheet for my poor, neglected, French Name Study. So far, I've made it through the Frenches on Wikipedia, and I'm working through the Frenches on ThePeerage.com. (So far, I'm up to the "L"s.) I am also starting in on trying to source unsourced Frenches and Welches. (I've already sourced all the unsourced Slades that I could.)

Pip, your comment about Juliet helping you with your Smith line gives me an idea, which I might just post to the Methodically Scattershot thread: one way to do things a little more methodically is to figure out which of my ancestral lines hits a brick wall first. (Or, to be more chronological about it, starts last.) My youngest end-of-line ancestor is Margaret (Crozier) Waddell, so perhaps I should see what I can do about adding more sources and pushing her line back at least one more generation, and then do the same with my next-youngest end-of-line ancestor.

by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (678k points)
So, Greg, not only do we both have Welch ancestry, we also share the surname Waddell, mine in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Youngest line to oldest? A smart idea!

As it happens, there's a Waddell Name Study, too, although I didn't start it, and don't run it.

Maybe the truck was giving you hints to put river rock in the road  "nonconstruction" holes so it had an easier trip.  I have never been stuck with a nonstarter but know it has to be frustrating.
I found two local teenage brothers who worked well together on a cleaning out project for me.  Sometimes siblings bicker among themselves but they didn't.  Have their card on my fridge and am passing on recommendations for them to all of my widowed friends that are always in need of this type of help.

On this day:

1685: King Louis XIV. issued the Edict of Fontainebleau, which was the starting point of Huguenot persecution in France. (The English wikipedia version puts it on 22 Oct, all other versions I looked at have it on 18 Oct.)

1867: Russia sold Alaska to the United States.

1943: Thomas Edison died.

A little remark about my OTD-posts: I learn so much through them. That's one of the reasons I really enjoy doing them since I started with that.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

And I'm glad that you add them here, Jelena. My Huguenot ancestors would have been able to fill me in on that first one!

Thanks Jelena. It's always good to remember our history smiley

Hello WikiKin!

I hope that everyone has had a good week.  I'm surprised (as always) to learn that it is Friday by seeing this thread.

On the homefront, the 2nd child (13 months) made his first sentence and has picked up a lot of new words this week.  It is always amazing to watch them grown and evolve.

On the genealogy front, I've been developing some profiles for the bio builders challenge.  I just now made a matching monogram for a background photo.  I wrote about it here:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/899908/color-match-profile-primary-photo-monogram-profile-background

and the profile now looks like this:

During the week I happened to be reading about the My Lai Massacre during the Vietnam War and I realized that the hero of the story, Major Hugh Thompson Jr. didn't yet have a WikiTree profile so I created one for him.

Aside from that, a lot of busy project work and similar tasks.

The weather has turned slightly fallish; the water temp dropped from 25 to 24.5 (77F to 75F), still quite comfortable to swim but with the cooler air temps, it makes sense to dry off quickly.

Since my ancestor audit some months ago, I've been slowly nibbling away at developing 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th great-grandparent's profiles.  Some have come along nicely and some have a way to go.

Looking forward to reading everyone's replies.

Edit to add:

I almost completely forgot that I had made huge progress on some society applications.  I had previously applied to Sons of the Revolution (NSSAR), Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW_, and the Military Order of Foreign Wars of the United States (MOFW).  All three needed this or that paperwork (since a year ago!) and with the new kid I sort of let it lapse.

In the last week I dug up docs & ordered a few more and sent them in.  SUVCW and MOFW appear approved and I'm just waiting on final notice.  NSSAR is complete except we're waiting on great-grandmother's death certificate - I ordered it last week and it should be here in 2 more weeks.

And so I hope to have some good news on those in the coming weeks.

The background looks great. I didn’t know about this, so I have learned something. Thank you

Wendy

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Thanks for sharing! I've bookmarked the page and will put your info to use :)

It's so exciting when your babe learns their first word. My son's first word was unusual and entirely my fault. wink I used to push my fingers to my thumb, up and down (like a bird bill), tickle him with that hand, and say, "Quack, quack." His first word was "Gack!"

SJ, when our little one (the one who got married last Jan) started talking, I was the only one who understood her as I was around her all the time. My wife had to ask for translations.

Hi SJ are the Bio Builders the ones who clean up bios?  I adopted 2 really messy profiles and have no idea where to begin...   They are

Burgin-161  and  Burgin-180

I cleared all the other suggestions and am down to these 2.  Any pointers are appreciated.   And if someone wants to tackle them ...  go for it!

Hi Laura, here is the project page and you can see how Bio Builders works: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Biography_Builders

I really love the monogram idea SJ, thanks for sharing! And best of luck on those great-grandparents. Every little bit helps.
SJ,

You've accomplished so much on the genealogy front this week,  even with the little ones around to be adored.  Perhaps you don't sleep.   Also glad you're working with the bio-builders,  taking up the slack for WikiTreers like me.   (I keep planning to change my bad habits.)

Greetings and Salutations, WikiTreers!

It's been a few weeks - last time on the Weekend Chat was before the Source-A-Thon so several items to note.

As I mentioned to Wendy above, we had to put our final pet to sleep, an ornery little cat named Maisy who had survived all the others, but around the age of 20 just couldn't go any further. It's hard when your little kitty becomes an old kitty, and can't stand for long, stops eating, and just looks miserable and while it might be the best thing for them, I can't help but feel a bit selfish that I want one more day, then one more day... and so on. At least it was a few weeks back, but as I said to Wendy, I'm still going through the paces of walking around the house and still thinking I'll see her, when the truth is I know she's gone. We're considering a short vacation in the near future, so it would be irresponsible to get a new cat before that, so for the moment, I'm cat-less and pet-less. We'll see if that changes.

I've been spending a bit more time at the church lately - just so many things to do and not nearly enough time to do them. I have been known to suffer from the disease of heavy volunteerism, so I always need to counter that with an ounce of common sense. My wife seems to provide that for me from time to time, and I'm so glad that she does. It's good that we balance each other a bit - not a perfect fit, but perfect enough.

On the Genealogy Front, I've been trying to wrap up several Notables and actually connected 3 this week and if I have time I have a 4th one. Currently working on Alan Zaslove who recently passed away earlier in October. I really thought connecting a 2nd generation immigrant from Russia was a long-shot, but fortunately someone he married also married a "Ford", and that's a good name to connect. So I've got a few profiles to build and validate, but it should work out.

Anyway, after a busy week and a busy weekend ahead, I'm looking forward to one that will soon be either less busy or at least has some quiet moments between. Not sure that's going to happen, but I can always hope and pray.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)

I know how you feel about your pets espcecially cats. I had to one died naturally when she was 20 years old and that was the first cat then in 2002 I had another one that was 22 years old that we had to put to sleep. So I will keep you all in my prayers. Ditto to the rest of what you said.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Scott, I know the feeling of loss when it comes to pets.I think that is why I haven't gotten another dog, it broke my heart to have to put down those two wonderful companions.

Even in a small church, if you are the capable one and reasonably competent, you get all the chores. Our church has about 19 active members. I am the third youngest at 61 and the most physically able, so....
I've had to do the same for two cats and it's so hard, even when you know it's the right thing to do.  So sorry about your wonderful little cat.
Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the warm thoughts. My wife just opted to get a new car the other day, so I'm thinking that entitles me to a new cat when we return from our few days away. We'll see how that all works out. I think secretly she's OK with a new cat as well, but will give me a hard time about it so that I'm clear that I'm still the chief pooper scooper in the house. And the chief feeder/waterer. She's in charge of playing, teasing, ruffling, and otherwise fun and crazy play activities, and she's also possibly the chief treat person. I'm good if she tires them out, as long as then I get to be chief nap lap person.

Hiya Pip, Thanks for hosting! Not a whole lot new here in Kentucky. We're missing the new grandson pretty bad and would love a trip to Nevada but just can't go right now. The kitchen is half put back together surprise so at least I can cook now. Had some problems with the cabinet order and the electrical isn't all done yet (the hubby got sick).

Staying busy as always in the Wiki-world. Gained a few new members this week so that is always exciting. I actually spent a lot of time trying to connect a profile to the global tree. Most of the families came from Russia/Poland and didn't have many descendants here. Good news is profiles are added for those regions. Bad news is they aren't connected to the Global tree yet. Hats off to the Connectors!!! I don't know how they do it lol. I've gone up, down and sideways and I'm still adding. I'll get there at some point.

by Mindy Silva G2G Astronaut (1.1m points)
I'm wondering too how the connectors do that. For the siblings Scholl I have added probably around 150 people, but still I am only in their little village. I know there is a cousin that went to Pennsylvania, but I still couldn't find a connection to him.... (ok I haven't looked at that cluster for a few weeks now, should maybe do that again)
Hopefully going back with a fresh set of eyes helps!
Ditto to what everyone said on this chat.
Mindy, I've seen where members keep plugging away trying to connect a family, and after a hundred or more profiles finally get a hit.

Our kitchen is one the schedule for next year. Ugh!

I haven't kept count but it is way more than I had expected lol. Tips for the kitchen remodel:

  1. Give yourself extra time so expectations aren't dashed by late arrivals,
  2. Check your list carefully if items are delivered (I did by the way, and had to explain to the drivers that they were wrong about what some of the pieces were),
  3. Don't bury anything in a box thinking "That won't be there long, I won't need it for a week or so" ... label the box like you are moving and prepare yourself for the possibility that you may need it before then,
  4. Make friends with fast food, salads, take out, your crockpot or a hot plate lol. That stove or refrigerator won't do you much good if the floor is tore up or the counters aren't installed.
  5. Make a list of possible plumbing or electrical changes you may want. It's easier to have it done when the kitchen is tore apart (or when they find something wrong after the kitchen is tore apart). Hey, I got extra outlets out of this one! Joy is me!

It's raining here on the Pacific Wet Coast, which is typical this time of year.

Yes, I did meet a new cousin, which was very cool. She's helping me figure out her side of the family tree.

Two of my bands are playing Saturday night, back to back at the same pub. I really should be practicing for that rather than hanging out on-line!

Suggestions for improvement? I have one. When I go to my "Unsourced" page, and view my unsourced profiles, the page displays the number of profiles I need to have sourced. Currently I am at 22. Higher than I like, but not unmanageable. When I go to my "Unconnected" page, I get my list of Unconnected Profiles on my Watchlist. There is a list of profiles, but no number displayed. It would be nice to have a number on display, so as I work through the list, I can monitor my progress. It's just a small suggestion, but it would be helpful.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Alex, I thought it rained all year over there! cheeky We are about 30 miles from the area that gets the most rain east of the Mississippi, about 80 to 90 inches a year.

Though it would probably get put on the back burner, you should propose your improvement idea as a post on G2G so it would at least get on the list.

Howdy neighbor!

I looked up your band on facebook. I'm going to have to try and catch a show when you're playing in town.

Too bad I did know about your show last night. We were out for an early show nearby and could have walked over after.

Peggy
No way! That would have been hilarious if you popped in! I’m playing the same venue tonight.

I wasn’t supposed to play last night, but I got a last minute call to fill in, because the regular bass player had the flu. Thankfully I was free, so the band was able to do the gig.

I thought before I go to my mom's to help her that I will update you all on how my dad is during this week. My mom says that he has improved a lot. He eats all he can but has quit eating deserts except for some cookies we take to him.

He now can get up out of a chair or his bed or even get in the chair and bed by himself without any help at all. But he doesn't can any weight his legs or very thin. In wheelchair he walks with his leg and can go so fast we can't keep up with him. Even the sitter he had on Sunday said she couldn't keep up with him. Will I will be going to my mother I will let you know how he is doing tomorrow and Sunday also.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Glad to hear about some improvement for your dad, Linda. Don't forget to take some time for yourself! We don't want you burned out, and you've been in high gear for some time now.
This coming Thursday me and my sister is flying to Orlando for National Prader-Willi Syndrome conference and will be getting back the next Monday afternoon the general conference starts on Friday morning and ends on Saturday afternoon. So I will not be on this chat next weekend because of that.
Have a good time in Orlando.  I hope there is some interesting new developments that make life easier for you.
You have had enough on your plate with parent issues lately.
We still do and will have till and being morbid but when they die and only time we will not have parent issues. My mom is talking about looking will hard so we will be ready when the time comes to put him in a long term care place for him. Also mom is saying that she might die before my dad does.

Hello Wikitreers! First time in this chat.

It has been an exhausting week, despite a national holiday on Monday. My blood pressure dropped suddenly at work on Tuesday, and my boss called the emergency- i was ok thanks God, just really low pressure and a bit of a slow pulse, but after that i have felt really tired all week.

The doctor said its maybe just stress and exhaustion, im a teacher/professor and the academic year is about to end, maybe i just need vacations.

Everything i did this week got unexpected complications, since a medical appointment that took me months to arrange being cancelled, to a charity event im helping with and im having trouble finding the time to finish tasks.

Only good thing is that today the sun was shining after a week of rainstorms non stop. Finally the temperature is warm and spring seems to be in full swing at last.

Im really looking forward to my summer vacations in January. Still havent booked anything though, my husband is a bit complicated at work atm so not sure about the dates.

Welcome Laura! I see you are still a fairly new member, I hope you enjoy your time on WikiTree in general and of course especially here in the Weekend Chat.

Spring is starting for you... sounds like you on the southern side of the world. Here for me in Europe it is now starting to get a bit uncomfortable and fallish (is that a word I just created?) Windy, rainy, sometimes nice, but not anymore warm. The period of the year is coming when I don't really like the weather.
Welcome Laura. After a week like that it sounds like you need a vacation! Enjoy that sunshine, I know we have been here. It's supposed to start raining in a few days and not stop for several days.

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Welcome to the chat, Laura! I hope you get better soon - and before your holidays so you can enjoy them completely!
Laura, my mother taught, and boy did she need a break when terms ended! I hope you can get some rejuvenation.

I love reading through what everyone is doing each week.  The variety of interests, the amazing knowledge, and friendliness of those who frequent this each weekend keeps me going.  Welcome to the newer members and glad to see you are back to those returning after a while off.  And of course good to connect again with our loyal posters who show up week after week.  Sending cyber hugs to you all!

Well things are winding down on selling my aunt's house.  The last 2 pieces of work are being completed.  We are set to close next week.  The couple who are buying it are thrilled.  They looked at 20+ houses before they saw this one and put a contract in on it.  The house has been in my family since the 1930s.  So this is bittersweet for me.  I grew up there for the first 6 years of my life.  So I have fond early childhood memories.  I have not really had the time to morn my aunt.  Being the person in charge of discharging her estate I spent my focus on getting things done that needed to be done for the inheritors (me and my two sons but my focus has been to help my sons who both have had a lot of medical bills in their young adult lives).  So soon I can pack away all the boxes, papers, etc into the basement to be retained for 7 years.  Because I grew up in that house with my grandparents, my great aunt, my aunt, and my parents, I have a lot of things I have kept or gifted to family, friends, and have made copious donations to charities.  So this chapter of a house that was a home for so many over the years is coming to a close.

On the health side my son is out of the hospital now for about a week.  They were able to give him chemo while he was in it which is good because we know it was working.  The side effects are really debilitating.  He has lost over 50 pounds in a coupe of weeks and just really looks tired.  He is doing what he can to hold it all together but you can see it is tough.  He was so excited to see his young son who is on the verge of turning 1 in a few weeks stand and take a few steps without holding on.  It won't be long and we will be running after him.

My other son's family have been dealing with a host of medical annoyances.  Things like allergies, food sensitivities, bruises from running into a pole (see the red eye post above on Chris's thread).

Ron and I just keep plugging along.

I am going to have a busy weekend again as we have final furniture to move,  some fun family time to spend, and some time to sleep!   As you can see... that is eluding me still tonight.

On the genealogy front I sourced a bunch of adopted Burtin profiles.  Cleaned up all suggestions but 2 and have been jumping in and out of various project duties I have.

Not related to WT, Yahoo Groups is shutting down its data storage of files, photos, etc.  This is affecting a ton of Yahoo Genealogy Groups several of which I admin, co-moderate, am an officer for or on the board for...  I spent the last two days downing files.   I have more to still do...
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (830k points)

Cyber hugs back!! That must be hard getting to that final stage. Prayers said again for your son. That is such a painful process - for them and the family.

I always dread seeing those notices that image sites are being shut down surprise. I noticed in Outlook this week that some pictures now have an expiration date. I usually download them when I get them, but it makes me wonder what I've lost not noticing the change.

Mindy,  had not heard about Outlook.  Made sure to tell my husband who uses it for both personal and business.  Thanks fir the heads up.

Yes this has been very painful  but fortunately we have a great support network ...you all included..that are helping us deal with everything.  Don't know how we would be getting through it without the love and support of our friends and extended family.

Laura I know what you mean. Ditto to what everyone said here especially Laura since I just been where she is at with the house. I told my mother today that I will come every weekend that I can except next weekend since I will not be in town to do that to help her do work inside her house and help get everything put in their places in her new house until we have everything tended to at my brothers office, my sister garage and her garage.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Laura, I know this is tough for you. I still have stuff from my grandparents that I do not need, nor does anyone else want it.

We (and St. Pat's) continues to pray for you and for your whole family.
Thanks Pip, Much appreciated.

Good morning from good ol' Europe,

On the home front mum tried to get a neurologist appointment. One said "we still don't have the calendars for 2020, when we get them you can get a date." The other said: "No way you can get a soon appointment." Oh well, in the end she will have to call the call center that will make a "quick" appointment. Even that can need "up to 4 weeks" to get it, no matter if the docs say she needs an appointment urgently.... (where is the *rolleyes* smiley when you need it?)

On the genealogy/wikitree-front I looked through the unindexed microfilm and found some more dates, names and also fates. I found a brother of my 2xgreatgrandfather I didn't know about and in the column "Remarks" there was something written I had difficulties to read... "This is what?? Wait... is that....?" I make a screenshot to make the picture even bigger than what is possible on FamSearch, because the paper is getting dark on that end... Yep, eventually I got it. My 2xgreatgranduncle had drowned in the river...
by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Jelena,

Hope your Mum gets her neurologist appointment soon!  (I've decided to start calling my Mom  Mum instead...... not sure how she'll take it!  Will let you know.)

So sorry about your 2xgreatgranduncle..... hope he wasn't young when he drowned.   I was researching my husband's family today and found two sisters that died of measles when they were in their early twenties.    I didn't realize measles was that deadly.    Our research certainly unearths facts that require contemplation.

I think I'll call Mum, but I won't mention the measles problem.  At 87,  she doesn't really like to talk about such things.

Peggy my dad is 87 too.

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat here.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Fall Weekend Chat.

Jelena, I'm have a difficult time convincing my Mom to make an appointment! There's no difficulty in getting one if she won't call. I just have to wait it out.
