Are you Belgian, or do you have ancestors in, or another connection to, the geographical region that is now called Belgium?

Then have a look at Project Belgium and let us know, by answering this post, that you would like to join us and collaborate!

Also follow the "Belgium" tag to make sure you stay up to date, and use the tag in g2g for any question or communication that is related to Project Belgium.

@Eowyn: this is now a free-space project, but the answers to a previous question have shown that there is quite some interest and enthousiasm to "upgrade" this to a sub-project of Europe. I've sent you a private message about this, and am very interested to know your thoughts on this!

Belgium ancestors, please add me
I would love to be a part of this project. My dad's family is from Belgium and I have done lots of research on it in the past few years. 3 of his grandparents immigrated to the US from Belgium in the early 1900's.
Welcome Robin and Desiree! You're on the member list, and we''l keep you updated through the "Belgium" tag!
I am interested in being part of the project. I'm French and have Belgian ancestry in West Flanders.
Yes, I’m having terrible trying to find any of my mother in laws family history from Belgium, so more help the better thanks
Welcome to the Belgium project, Camille!
I've added your name to the member list, Lol! Can you let us know your profile and a profile for your mother in law's family?
I like to join please!
Need to answer probably instead of replying right?

On my way.
We're not difficult about commenting instead of replying, Astrid :) You're part of the team!
Hi, I have a Belgian ancestor and would like to be apart of this project. The family name is Verding. I will post in the form at a later date as I do have some excellent details. I need some direction on researching docs on Belgian sites. The potential is so exciting. Cheers

Thanks Greg! I noticed that you were planning to work on guidelines for (historical) locations in Belgium. Any result from that? I'm working on something similar and would like to avoid doing double work!

Yes, I have paternal ancestors in Visé, Liege, Belgium at my pedigree, so I like to join.

Great, Herman! You're Belgian line goes quite a way back, I see! I've added your name to the member list and if you follow the "Belgium" tag you'll be sure to stay in the loop on the Belgium Project!

Filip you’ve been a tremendous help to me with my Belgian roots, if I can help with any research needed for Belgians that immigrated to the United States let me know!
by Martha Houston G2G2 (2.0k points)
Happy to have you on board, Martha! And thanks for the offer: connecting Belgian emigrants to their new homes will be a major challenge for the project, because (sadly) a lot of the emigration records at the Belgian side have been lost.

I live in Zeeuws Vlaanderen (the Zeeland part of Flanders or....the Flandrian part of Zeeland)) and yes I have Flandrian ancestors. So, I want to help

Thanks, Erwin! I've added your name to the list, but I'm not sure of your profile. Is it De_Bruijn-111?
Yes , that is me

Yes please, my great grandfather was Belgian. Only proved this year thanks to DNA testing, it had always been a family mystery before.

Not sure I have the time to offer much to the project, but it would be nice to be involved on the periphery at least.
by Henry Campbell-Ricketts G2G6 Mach 1 (12.0k points)
Thanks! I've had a look at the Petein line of your family and I think we'll be able to help you with that in this project! I've added your name to the member list and if you follow the "Belgium" tag you'll be sure to stay in the loop on the Belgium Project.
That would be excellent. I have details of his line back to Joannes Baptista Petein born in 1714 in Méteren in France (all previous generations born in Belgium) but would love to know more about them.

My husband is Belgian. He immigrated to Canada with his parents <https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gr%C3%A9ant-3> and <https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Van_Cuyck-5> at the age of 10 in 1951. A professional genealogist did some extensive work on his mother's maternal line back in the early 2000's, but there's a lot missing. Cousins have filled in many blanks, but the gaps are huge. I'd love to join the project.

by Deb Cavel G2G6 Mach 2 (24.7k points)
Welcome to the Belgium Project! A professional genealogist that left a lot missing... That sounded like a challenge to me :) Have a look at the Gréant line: I think I was able to fill some gaps...

Oh My Goodness! Filip, Thank you so much! heart What a wonderful contribution to my husband's tree! I have looked for this information for years without success. The genealogist was hired by a genetics firm to investigate my husband's mother's family because his mother supposedly was a descendant of the artist Peter Paul Rubens. They didn't even look at his father's family.

I am so very grateful for your kindness. I was resigned to never being able to find my husband's paternal family.

People like you are what make WikiTree so wonderful!

Hi Fillip,

like a lot of the Dutch people I have ancestors in Vlaanderen and Northen France. So I like to join your project.

There are helppages translated in Dutch and French. Also there are pages in Dutch, called "Nederlands Portaal" with extensive explanation how to work in WikiTree and where, for example, you can find online resources. You can find it here: Nederlands Portaal I am projectcoordinator of this. If you like you can use the links and categories from het Nederlands Portaal in your Project. We can also work together to adjust these pages so that more attention is paid to Flemish subjects and rules.

Good initiative by the way, I hope this soon becomes an official Project with its own badge.  Success with it !

by Joop van Belzen G2G6 Pilot (147k points)
Great to have you on board, Joop! Of course I know het Nederlands Portaal and I was already planning to contact you to see if one of those Dutch flags at the top can maybe become a Belgian flag :) I'll get back to you soon about that!

I consulted within the DutchRoots team that worked on het Nederlands Portaal. We think it is a good idea to include the Belgian flag in the logo. We also want to pay more attention to Belgian rules, for example with regard to last names and to place links to online archives.  If you have suggestions or comments, links to online resources etc. let me know.  Everything is easy to adjust.

In the meantime I have replaced the flag on various pages as a test, so that we can see what it will be like. smiley

Thanks a lot, Joop! I've already added links to the Dutch and other portals to the Belgium page.

With regard to Belgian "rules" (names, places, ...): I'm working on a draft for those, and will then open a g2g-discussion about them. My own opinion is that they should differ as little as possible from the Dutch and French guidelines, but maybe with some tweaks here and there (capitalization of prepositions, more attention for Latin versions of names, patronymics that are less of an issue in Belgium, ...). Anyway, more about that soon!

I'm also compiling a list with online sources, and I'll let you know about them for possible inclusion on the portal.

I have a very narrow interest.

A direct ancestor, Andreas Tuijbens, was hired by the Dutch East Indies trading company (VOC) in 1768 and went to what is now Indonesia.  I am trying to find his ancestry, likely in Vlaanderen.

I have collected relevant citation for several years, but not yet constructed a reliable ancestor tree.  If anyone is interested in this family please let me know.
by

Hello Gio, I wouldn't mind looking into it. You mentioned you have collected relevant information, can you add it to the profile of Andreas Tuybens? The more possible clues the better!

I added my Belgian (actually Vlaanderen) ancestor, and the linkage to me

Thanks Gio!

I've looked up the source you provided for Andreas Tuybens, and amended the citation a bit, also including a link to the document. It turns out that the person that the link refers to has already a profile on Wikitree: Andreas Georg Heinrich Teubes. If you're confident this is your ancestor, the profiles should be merged.

However, this person is German, not Belgian, and I didn't find a connection with his son Mathias Melchior. So is it possible that the citation is actually about a different person? I suppose there's more information on this in the "Almanac of Ternate" that you cite for his son, but I'm not able to find it. Do you have a link or scan for this source?

Best regards, Filip

Wow, Filip

That the  Andreas Tuijbes I had would be identical to Andreas Georg Heinrich Teubes is wellnigh certain.

He joined the VOC in Wolfenbuttel,  but I could not make sense of that, since most Tuybens live in Vlaanderen, and he joined the Zeeland chamber of the VOC  - per data I found at the CBG in the Hague.

Ten also his son, who I had as Mathias Melchior Tuybens with an estimated DoB of 1770 - because of a note "Fort Age" is very likely identical to Mathias Melchior Tuybens., and I entered that as match in my genealogy.

With that you and Wikitree provide many more family members who stayed in the Cape area.

Feel free to do wiki merges that corresond to these matches.  I am not an authorized Wiki member.

I can provide much more Tuybens family data, in part collected by a cousin who is a Mormon and was very active in our genealogy.  Many of course go back to the Netherlands. For the 3 wives of Andries Eugenius Tuybens (*1874) and my grandmothers to 1717. It is hard to type it all in, but I could provide a GEDcom file.

I don't know if Wikitree accepts those.

I am very grateful that you took the time to sort it all out.

I think I found the Almanac of Ternate at the CBG in The Hague, But I didn't file any copies of pictures I might have taken.

And now I am far away from it.

Gio Wiederhold

PS: I will also correct and update the story of the Tuybens at

https://wiederhold.org/Stories/AndreasTuybens1745.pdf

Gio

Hi Gio,

I've initiated the merge, but as profile manager you'll have to follow it up (as well as Anthony Faull, the manager of the other profile). I suggest you contact him to compare your information. btw, you are a fully authorized wikitree member!

As for GEDCOMs, I don't have experience with that, but have a look at this help page.

Best regards,

Filip

Filip,
I tried to approve the merge, but as far as I understand the language, you rejected it and I can only conform rejecting the merge, as shown below. I did not do that.
I do believe the merge to be correct. The birthplace Ternate was based on my uncle telling me that the Tuybens lived in Ternate for long time. The VOC records only state that he left thee VOC in Batavia,  That the cape of Good Hope gets involved is not at all surprising.
The names are sufficiently unusual and close to support the match, as are the given and estimated dates.
Please tell me what I should do.
I did do the merge in my private Geneaology, and that will be published some time, first on Wiederhold.org, so that I can remain personally responsible for updates and corrections
Thanks
I now will have to look for Teubes in Schleswig-Holstein

Hi Gio,

It was the other profile manager who rejected the merge, but apparently you've been able to convince him in the mean time, because he has now accepted. I'll continue this conversation with a private message, because since Andreas appears not to have been Belgian, this is now off-topic here.

Welkom bij Project België, Bea! :)

Groetjes,

Filip

Good news!

Project Belgium has recently been promoted to a more official project (actually a sub-project of Europe)! You can find the (revamped) project page here.

That means among other things:

*You can now receive a project badge (of the Europe Project) indicating your involvement.

*We can more easily create stickers.

*We will be able to discuss and "officially" establish guidelines and standards relating to Belgian profiles.

*We will have a project account for important Belgian profiles.

Many people have indicated their interest in the (former) free-space Belgium project, and I'd like to invite you to (re)confirm your interest to become a member of Project Belgium by answering this question.

Thank you all for having expressed your interest here! Because of you, Project Belgium is now official!

Filip
