1906 Chicago Tribune mentions "5 Whiting Street". Where is/was this?

The 16Apr1906 edition of The Chicago Daily Tribune mentions issuance of a burial permit for Eugene Signor who was living at 5 Whiting Street. The Cook County Death record also mentions 5 Whiting Street as Eugene's place of residence at the time of his death. Eugene was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois.

How may I find out where this street was, as I cannot find it on today's maps in either Chicago or River Grove? It appears the streets have perhaps been renamed? Or I am blind, desperately in need of new glasses.

I did find mention of 5 Whiting Street in the same paper a couple months later and it sounds like it was perhaps an apartment building? (A bit more information regarding this is in the Research Notes section of the attached profile.)

Thanks in advance for your help and ideas!

Hello Susan.

According to this (Chicago Street changes compiled in 1948), Whiting St. was renamed Walton St.

I hope this may be of help.

Ah, most helpful, Rubén. Thank you for tracking that down! smiley

Today, it looks like this is West Walton St and East Walton St. West Walton looks to be an 8 mile walk from the Elmwood Cemetery. I am going to try to track down an old map of Chicago as I'd like to know more specifically where 5 Whiting St was (GPS Coordinates).

You are welcome, Susan.

Best of luck in finding the exact place!
