Disproven Existence Candidate: Thomas John Tilton-85

Thomas John Tilton appears to be a made-up person.

According to Tilton researcher William Haslet Jones, there are records in Narborough, Warwickshire, of a Thomas Tilton who witnessed the 1515 will of a Henry King. (LRO, 1515, #42) There was also a John Tilton who witnessed the 1517 will of a Nicholas Yongle (LRO, 1517, #124).

There is simply no evidence of any individual Thomas John Tilton, which would have been a highly unlikely name in 1359, the purported birthdate.

He seems to have been created to provide a father for William Tilton-82, whose will is dated 1542.

Although I agree it is highly unlikely that Thomas John Tilton existed under that name, I'm not sure that the Disproven Existence Project is the right place.

To me that project is for mythological people or for those invented and found throughout Internet genealogies.  If we were to send every profile with a name error or date error, then that project would have the most profiles of all the WikiTree projects.

Given there is evidence for the existence of a Thomas Tilton and a John Tilton, who is about the right time period to be the father of the William Tilton who died about 1542, I would change the current Thomas John Tilton into one or the other (get rid of impossible dates) and disconnect him as the father of William Tilton, but perhaps put something in Research Notes to indicate he could be the father, given same place and about right time.

Note: I am presuming that the William Tilton who died 1542/43 is the end of the Tilton line?  That his father's name is unknown?

Ah, well, it was a shot.

Yes, no antecedents are known for Tilton-82, but that will never stop people from trying to find or make them up.

While I would like to edit the profile, and that of William Tilton-82, it appears it would take a pre-1500 person to do so, despite the fact that no evidence has William born before 1500.
Adding a Disputed Existence research box to the profile might be a good idea

Agree with all said--especially the THANKS for your work on the Tilton family. I really appreciate that someone much more skilled than I am is tackling the old gedcom dumps for these ancestors. I've been quietly observing and hope to learn some lessons from you as you clean up the tree!yes
