There are two kinds of degree: degrees of consanguinity, and degrees of Kevin Bacon (or Wikitree's equivalent).

The first kind is really about how closely you are related to someone by blood, and refers to things like first cousins (also called "cousins in the first degree"), who have two of the same grandparents as each other, second cousins who have two of the same great grandparents as each other, and so on.

The second is about how interconnected we are a species: if your mother's brother's wife married my father's sister's husband, we'd be seven 'degrees' away from each other using the connection finder (or the bit about 'degrees' at the bottom of our profiles), though we'd scarcely be related at all.

I have no known genealogical relationship with Henry VIII Tudor, but I am 22 degrees from him.

This works because my connection goes up my blood family for a while, then side-steps by a marriage to another blood-line, then sidesteps again by marriage to another blood-line, then by marriage to the brother of Catherine Parr, then by Catherine's marriage to Henry.

This is how relationship degrees work when there is no direct blood connection.  I think it would worry me a little if I found I was directly related to him.  I've always been happy as the peasant type. cheeky

Its just a fun thing that WikiTree provides so that you can track through the tree to find a connection, not a relationship. Compare it to a Maze. It has no genealogical research value.
