Hi Terry, your grandfather’s birth detail available at the GRO website (HM Passport service) shows his mum was Daykin.

ROE, JOSEPH  WILLIAM   DAYKIN
GRO Reference: 1902  D Quarter in AUCKLAND  Volume 10A  Page 255

However, it becomes a little confusing then, I cannot find a marriage between a Daykin and a Roe

Maud Ada Daykin married Richard Williams in 1892 in Auckland, Durham:

"England and Wales Marriage Registration Index, 1837-2005," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DNH-D6N : 6 January 2015), Maud Ada Daykin, 1892; from "England & Wales Marriages, 1837-2005," database, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : 2012); citing 1892, quarter 3, vol. 10A, p. 290, Auckland, Durham, England, General Register Office, Southport, England.

A Maud Williams did not marry a Joseph William Roe until 1924 but these would be your grandparents, not your great grandparents?

My best advice would be to join up for Familysearch and GRO Index (both are free) and start with yourself and work backwards finding sources. I will try to help you if I can, intriguing!

Okay I have another 1892 marriage in Auckland for a John William Rowe but no spouse name is cited

"England and Wales Marriage Registration Index, 1837-2005," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DNZ-K1J : 13 December 2014), John William Roe, 1892; from "England & Wales Marriages, 1837-2005," database, findmypast(http://www.findmypast.com : 2012); citing 1892, quarter 3, vol. 10A, p. 200, Auckland, Durham, England, General Register Office, Southport, England.

Edit: the Ancestry version of the source shows two possible spouses, Leah Elizabeth Tibbetts and Sarah Ann Ward for this marriage

Off to look at census :-)

Edit, got them John William and Maud A and children in 1901 will send you a PM :-)
