Pfc. James L. Zimmer of Owego Is Killed in Viet Battle Wednesday
A 20-year-old Owego soldier was killed in action in Vietnam on May 22, it was reported Monday.
Pfc. James L. Zimmer, who arrived in Vietnam on Feb. 16 of this year, was killed during a firefight while on a combat operation in South Vietnam last Wednesday, an Army spokesman stated.
Zimmer attended Newark Valley High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army last August through the Binghampton Recruiting Office. Following his training, he was assigned to C. Company, First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry of the First Infantry Division.
Pfc. Zimmer is survived by his mother, Mrs. Betty R. Cole of Owego; his father, Leslie R. Zimmer of Binghamton and two brothers, William and Thomas, of Owego.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the McPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley. The body is expected to be brought to the United States soon.
