Through DNA have found a 3rd or 4th cousin.  He knows nothing about his family beyond GreatGrand Parents and that his ancestry is of German decent.  I would like to help and so far have gone back 4 generations.

Tom, there are a couple of glitches that might have occurred:

  1. The only way the invitation can be sent through WikiTree is for you to first create a profile here for your cousin.  Then enter his email address - just doing that automatically starts the invitation process.  Please make sure the email address you entered for him is correct - that's where the invitation will automatically be sent.
  2. Have your cousin check his mail folder spam or junk or whatever it's called, just in case the message went there.
  3. If you go back to your cousin's profile, you can choose to re-send the invitation.
  4. If all else fails, your cousin can go to the WikiTree site and join on his own, then merge his profile with the one you created for him.  This is something we would rather avoid, though, because we don't want to unnecessarily create duplicate profiles plus it puts a burden on a brand new member to have to go through the merge process right at the start.

I wish there was another way to invite a cousin without creating a profile for them.
I agree, Jillaine, especially since the privacy changes.

When we create the profile, it's unlisted, then when the person accepts they have to change it to one of the private choices - not a good way to start a new member off with having to correct stuff.

If they don't accept the invitation then bottom line is that we have added a new unlisted and likely unconnected profile.  Aren't we supposed to have permission of a living person to add their profile now?

Did you have his e-mail address? And did you ceate a profile for him? I admit I've not had much success getting people to join, but you could just tell this person to look at the Wikitree site and ask for help.

The process is described here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Invitations

I'd suggest looking through that page of the Help file to make sure you did it correctly.
