Robertson’s Moray Scotland

Hi all. I’ve looked through the Scottish registers trying to find details relating to James Robertson’s lineage. I have his wife as Jean Phin. I have it mostly forward but not his parents or any juicy bits. A name like Robertson in Scotland seems like finding a needle in a haystack. I have a day job and find myself up until 2 or 3 am sometimes looking and by then getting very brave in making assumptions lol.

Mum is 80 and I’d love to find something great about her family that she can have in her heart. She was raised by her grandparents so the family history is a bit sketchy to say the least ‍♀️

I have had some amazing help and am so glad I became part of this group as it’s restored some of my faith in human nature. Thank you all ☺️

There is a James Robertson born 1797, living in Lhanbryde in 1861, it looks as if he is a widower.  Lhanbryde is just a hop skip and jump from Urquhart.

Ah - here he is with Agnes!  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VYYZ-Z35  so I think it's the right family.

Jean is with him in 1841. She wasn't born in Moray unfortunately.

I haven't found a death for Jean yet, but I'll come back to it later today.  If you can PM me your email I'll send you a copy of the 1841 census.

Hi Tanya,

James Robertson died 1874, age 76 at St Andrews Llanbryd (Moray) Ref: 142/9

Question for you: There is a 14 year old Alexander Robertson living with Jean's parents Charles and Jane Phyn at St Andrews Llanbryd (Moray), Haddingtonshire (East Lothian) on the 1841 Census, have you come across Alexander before?

"Scotland Census, 1841," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VYC7-YFK : 10 July 2019), Charles Phyn, St Andrews Llanbryd (Moray), Haddingtonshire (East Lothian), Scotland; from "1841 England, Scotland & Wales census," database, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : 2012); citing p. 7, PRO HO 107, New Register House, Edinburgh; FHL microfilm 1,042,645.

On the 1871 Census James Robertson is living with his daughter Jane Ross and family at Walkers Crescent, 10, St Andrews Thanbryde, St Andrews Lhanbryd, Moray. On census night of 1871 Jane's husband Alexander Ross, a 38 year old Farm Servant born at Knockando, was at Stone Cross Hill, St Andrews Thanbryde, St Andrews Lhanbryd.

Alexander Ross married Jane Robertson on 27 Aug 1853 at St Andrews, Lhanbryd, Moray.

In Scotland, and elsewhere many names are interchangeable often in ways which may and do confuse, - Jessie, Janet, Jane and Jean are a good example of interchangeable names.

I've gone back a few generations on the Finns/Phins but have got no further with the Robertson side apart from James' father being John.
