Why has my half brother become my uncle?

(Mackie) James Malcolm Shearer son of Malcolm Shearer and Mary Innes Shearer (Laing) is my half brother.  His full siblings are Elizabeth, Gordon, Margaretta, and two others not yet entered

Hi Brian,

When James Malcolm Shearer was created, James Laing (Laing-1906) was assigned as his father. You can remove James Laing as father, if desired by editing the profile and removing/replacing the father (on the right side).

Your change log shows that you "added James Malcolm Shearer (1940-2017) as sibling for Mary (Laing) Shearer" That appears to be how James Laing (her father) was assigned as father of James Malcolm Shearer. Let us know if you need help changing the father of James Malcolm Shearer.

We can't see your half-brother's profile, because of the privacy settings -- but double check all the parent-child relationships for both you and your (half)siblings, and make sure they are correct.

If the half brother you share a parent with grows up and marries a sister of your other parent, he would become your uncle.
